See you again (chapter 3)
☆☆☆
It's very hard to pretend that nothing happened. After almost a whole year of living in this state, she can't just forget about everything at the click of her fingers. The birthday celebration was a blur: the reality of the world around her was constantly being questioned. For the sake of appearances, she had to have fun with everyone, and the fake smile didn't disappear for a minute while the most contradictory ideas crowded into her head. The decision to go back into business, so that there would be no time and effort left for unnecessary thoughts, seemed right. The morning invariably began in her mother's office: she was ready to take on even what was far from Auradon. One such occasion was the celebration of the tenth anniversary of Chad's younger sister, Chloe. Jane had never been to Cinderellaburg before. The beauty and grandeur of their palace took one's breath away.
"Hello! Aren't you Jane?"
She turned around: in front of her stood a short girl with blue hair braided in two pigtails with yellow bows. Jane had known her older brother since childhood and was surprised when she found out how different the members of this family were from each other.
"I can't believe that my mom's godmother's daughter is going to organize my birthday!" The girl clapped her hands joyfully. "I'm so worried..."
"I am familiar with these experiences." She smiled, but shuddered: the memories of her own holiday were haunting. "The whole day is just yours. All dreams and wishes come true."
"Can you do magic too?"
"I prefer to do it on my own," Jane shook her head thoughtfully. "If you have free time, will you take a little tour?"
Chloe was glowing positively literally every second of their conversation. Perhaps she was even jealous: two years ago, her confidence in the future was exactly the same. But some dreams are destined to remain so. Pushing away the gloomy thoughts, the girl promised herself to focus entirely on ensuring that Chloe wouldn't regret anything.
By lunchtime, all the preparations were completed, while the celebration itself was supposed to begin at noon. Chad, who had arrived shortly before, was surprised that his younger sister was following her like a tail. But what could Jane do? Even their parents laughed about it.
"Look, you're standing like this," the girl taught her when they went out onto an empty territory, "you take the rapier with your right hand. Yes, yes, hold it tight."
Despite the fact that she usually didn't have to be interested in any kind of sports, Chloe explained in the simplest and most understandable words.
"How many guests will there be?" Jane asked, more boldly deflecting another blow.
"I heard mom and dad want to invite someone very cool. He seems to be able to communicate with dragons, just like me."
"Not with dragons, but I understand animals."
Chloe turned around, looking at the guest with admiration. Carlos. Carlos is here too. She was still breathless with love for him, but the incomplete understanding of what had happened burned her more.
"Jane!" He beamed, looking at her. "Your mom said you'd be here, and so did I..."
Realizing that she wasn't ready to talk, the girl looked expressively at the young birthday girl in the hope of help. Chloe blinked in disbelief, then grabbed her by the arm and chattered:
"That's right, I completely forgot, mom wanted to talk to you, it's important!"
And she dragged me towards the palace. There was no time to think about how convincing it was. And all of these weren't good deeds at all, but there was simply no other choice. As soon as the door closed behind them, Chloe crossed her arms in front of her chest.
"And why? Why hide from a boy who is obviously in love with you?"
"It's a long story." Exhaling noisily, she slid down the wall. "I'm just... can't."
"Mom says I understand people well," the girl casually remarked, sitting down next to her. "And I'm even better at keeping other people's secrets."
Jane mentally weighed all the possible consequences and slowly, carefully choosing her words, told about the events that took place without terrible details. After listening to her carefully, Chloe narrowed her eyes:
"Mom had a similar case. Her stepmother stole your mom's wand and changed the story. Dad thought he was dancing with Anastasia." The girl chuckled, tucking her legs under her. "But mom was brave enough to figure it out. And you can do it too."
"But..."
"No buts! Tell me, do you love him?"
"Yes, it's crazy, although I still don't understand at all how these feelings turned out to be mutual..." Jane broke off.
"Have you seen my parents?" Chloe raised her head, looking out at the street where Cinderella and King Charming were chatting with Carlos. "They've been married for so many years and are still terribly in love. Do you know what the secret is? They discuss everything. Go ahead, talk to him! Tell him what you told me. I'm sure he'll understand."
"Today? Am I not here for your birthday?"
"So be it, then tomorrow." Chloe waved her hand.
And she didn't lie: the birthday girl successfully prevented them from being alone, constantly finding new excuses. Perhaps she could make a good actress in the future. At the end of the day, Jane even felt guilty: after telling her mother that she would be here until the evening, she had to turn off the phone. The realization of his mistake arose later, when the Fairy Godmother herself appeared at the celebration. Although the girl used to be very happy. Who wouldn't want relationship support from family? But she is unlikely to be believed now. Cardiac arrest in a dream can't be without a reason. However, no one knew why.
"Honey, is everything okay?"
What could she say? "No, I lived for a year with the idea that the love of my life was dead, and a couple of days ago literally the whole world pretended that it wasn't so?"
"Something wrong?"
Mom approached her: there was nervousness in her movements.
"You're avoiding Carlos."
"No, not at all," Jane waved away, clutching the tablet to her. "It's just that Chloe keeps distracting me. I can't refuse the birthday girl."
"Jane!" A high-pitched voice sounded from behind. "Come on, I'll show you my dragon. Did you know that they can fly in any direction?"
The girl shrugged guiltily as she followed Chloe away. Otherwise, the holiday was very calmly.
