Reasons why General George S. Hammond is The Best Leader that Stargate Command every had:

Head of a super top secret military organization responsible for the defense of the planet and his grandchildren are Number One on his speed dial. The President, presumably, is Number Two.

When the Stargate Program is being disclosed to representatives from Great Britain, France, and China and Kinsey tried to wrest control of the SGC away from him, Supreme Commander Thor of the Asgard casually dropped in to support him. It takes a man with significant chutzpah and badassness (and significant balls) to have one of the leaders of a highly advanced race (from another galaxy) show up to flex their friendship and to prove a point.

He can and will do everything to save his people. His people don’t just include those under his direct military command either. See: going to bat for Teal’c and ensuring that Cassie Fraiser gets the medical treatment she requires.

When you need to call in the cavalry, you hope that this guy is leading the charge. See: climbing into an old model Death Glider to save Jack, Sam, and Daniel and commanding the Prometheus in the battle against Anubis.

Connected to the above, he will make one of his rare trips off-world to save his people. When he does, you know shit is real. Memorable incidents include: the above-mentioned Death Glider incident and going to personally negotiate for SG-1’s safe release when they are captured off-world.

His “ability to handle weird shit” factor is through the roof, mainly due to being the guy who headed Stargate Command during its first seven years of existence. Proof of the matter is this quote: “The things I’ve heard sitting in this chair.”

His leadership, protectiveness, and loyalty to his people is best put on display by this quote: “As long as there is a snowball’s chance in Hell of my officer coming out of this alive, we’re going to take it!”

After he got promoted to head Homeworld Security, he dropped back by the SGC just so that he could get his chair from Jack. (He liked it too much and his new one just wasn’t the same.)
