Only One - Dream X Reader

A/N: again with self indulgent stuff lolz. This hurts. Owie ouch fuck anyway this is basically a universe where instead of just. hiding in the toilet... Dream actually escaped lolz

Theme: angst again. If I’m not happy none of you can be either.

Warnings: HAHAHA DEATH AGAIN GUYS, strong language, just very very intense angst rn teehee

Characters: c!Dream, Y/N

The alarm went off, but neither Y/N nor the people they sat with knew what that meant. It came from the prison, right? Honestly, most of the people that Y/N was with knew what they implied. Sam hadn’t told many people.

It could mean something bad, but it could also mean a false alarm. Up until the point where word got around that Dream had escaped.

Escaped? But that prison was so high security, how could he have...?

It didn’t take long for the hushed whispers to become full-on panic. Perfect for Dream, right? Exactly.

He snuck in through Y/N’s window at night, while they were reading in bed. Their cat meowed softly beside them, but that was the only noise that Y/N could hear. Dream had gotten to be pretty good at being quiet, which put Y/N at the immediate lower hand.

“It’s your fault, did you know?” He asked from the darkness. Startled, Y/N looked up, then around frantically. They reached for the chest that held their axe, when- “There’s no point. I came in here earlier and took your axe.”

“What do you want..?” They drew their arm back. Of course Dream would take anything they could use to defend against him. “And what do you mean it’s my fault? If you mean you being locked up, then you’re mistaken.”

“No. No, I mean the deaths. All those people you could have saved, and you let them die,” Dream hissed. “I’m here to send you far, far away. Into your own Hell.” He stepped out of the shadows, the cracks in his mask more prominent from the soft light of a torch.

“They’re not my fault.” They stood to face him, but the soft glint of a sword at Dream’s side made them falter slightly. They knew how this would end. Still, they had things to say.

“If they aren’t your fault, then whose? Hm?” He cocked his head to the side quizzically and pulled his mask up to rest on the top of his head. His grin was borderline maniacal, and his eyes were alight with a fury that Y/N hadn’t seen in a long time. Dream took their silence as an answer. “Exactly. And that’s why I’m here.” He raised his sword to strike.

“You loved me once,” They exclaimed quickly to stall for time. Maybe someone would come for them. To check on them. Someone.

Dream’s stance loosened for a moment, his dulling slightly. He knew all too well that he had. The two had been so close. They’d been a good match once upon a time.

Y/N continued. “You and I loved each other. We... we were perfect.” They put their hands up as a surrender, before they quickly dove under their bed and grabbed a backup axe from a chest underneath. They popped back up on the other side with their axe ready.

“Ah, I see. You plan to kill me instead, right?”

Y/N didn’t say anything, breathing heavily.

“Fine.” Dream opens his arms wide, challenging Y/N to take a strike. “Go ahead, my love.”

Of course, Y/N was foolish enough to try. He didn’t have any armour, so it would be a quick shot, right? Wrong. The axe hardly did anything to him. It barely scratched him.

“Wha-?”

Dream immediately struck the dumbfounded Y/N with the handle on his sword, knocking them to the floor. “I know, right? It’s not even human how little your axe does to me. Lemme tell you something.” He grabbed them by the hair to make them look up at him, his expression cocky and full of pride. “All the torture I endured from Quackity made me tough. The longer it went on, the harder it was for him to hurt me. And now you? You get to die knowing you could do nothing to me.”

He threw them back to the floor and held his sword high again, before letting it drive it’s way straight through his ex-lover.

Tears stained their cheeks. In their last few minutes, they pulled the sword from their midsection, stood, and held onto Dream. “If I die, so do you. You can’t break our spirits from here on out. No more reviving, just natural and permanent death.” They positioned the sword at Dream’s back, and with all the rest of their strength, drove it right through the both of them. “I love you, Dream,” They added shakily in their last breaths, “always have.”
