"You're doing great," Edmund had had targets set up for his sons to practice their shooting, Colin and Benedict had gotten bored and wandered off awhile ago, but Anthony was still at it.

"Take your time lining up the shot before firing. It's not a race."

Edmund should not have been surprised when his second eldest son announced he was engaged to Miss Somerville, Benedict had known Thinya since they had been children, and just like Colin and Penelope friendship was a good place to start a marriage.

Stepping out of the ballroom onto the veranda, Viscount Bridgerton smiled to see his son's fiancée had slipped away for a moment.

"Would you mind some company from your future father-in-law?"

"Fair enough, it is a bit stuffy in the ballroom," Edmund said coming to stand beside Thinya. The quietness of the veranda compared to the ballroom was sort of nice. He could understand why his future daughter-in-law sought this kind of peace.

"I hope you're enjoying the party, needing fresh air aside. We're all just thrilled you're joining our family."

"You may decide what you call me, but no titles, and my wife agrees with me on this. You're to be a member of this family, it doesn't matter that you were born to another, you'll be treated just as any of our children are treated."

"Fair enough, it is a bit stuffy in the ballroom," Edmund said coming to stand beside Thinya. The quietness of the veranda compared to the ballroom was sort of nice. He could understand why his future daughter-in-law sought this kind of peace.

"Should I expect anything less from a ball you've planned?" Edmund smiled. Even all these years later, Violet still amazed him.

"You've out done yourself, Darling."

"I can't take all the credit for my children, but I do look forward to you becoming my daughter." He glanced out into the dark garden and thought for a moment.

"I've known you since you were a child, and if I may be so bold, part of me hoped that it would be you that Benedict chose."

It amazed him how in love with his wife he still was, eight children later and Violet was still as beautiful as the day they met.

"I do, you look beautiful, as always. I certainly am the luckiest of men."

"It will be." Edmund promised. Everything Violet did was perfect, though he may be a little biased. Tonight's ball would be beautiful.

He'd expected nothing less.

"Are the girls ready for tonight?"

"Isn't the ballroom exquisite?" violet @ edmund @storyofwhoiam

"Should I expect anything less from a ball you've planned?" Edmund smiled. Even all these years later, Violet still amazed him.

"High praise for a father," Edmund said, he'd raised his boys to be gentlemen, Edmund was glad to see the lessons had stuck thus far.

"If I may offer some advice for your impending marriage? Marriage is work, it is wonderful, but it is also a choice. One that you make every day, that doesn't mean you don't ask for help, but it is something you have to work at even when things are good."

"Hm... you know you married me for my ruggedly handsome good looks, Dear." Edmund joked, honestly though he knew how lucky he was. He could have ended up in a loveless marriage if Violet had turned him down all those years ago.

"That dress reminds me of the one you were wearing the first time I saw you."

Violet reached out to adjust Edmund's cravat, a loving gesture that had become second nature over the years. "And you, my dear, look as handsome as ever." Her gaze softened as she looked at him, her hand resting gently on his chest.

Nineteen years ago he'd held their first son and heir for the first time, that had been one of the greatest moments of Edmund's life, a new chapter and a fresh start.

But just because baby Hyacinth was baby number eight didn't make her any less precious.

If anything his recent brush with death made this moment just as special.

Violet had fallen asleep so when their newborn fussed Edmund got up to tend to her.

He hadn't been able to hold Hyacinth when she was first born, he'd been too poorly. So this was the first he'd been able to hold his youngest.

Shushing gently, Edmund sat down on the edge of the bed, whispering to his daughter so that he wouldn't wake his exhausted wife.

After a few minutes he felt Violet stir.

"I got her... she's perfect, Vi."

It was early, dawn hadn't even broken yet, but Edmund woke up to Violet softly tracing his spine.

Rolling over to face his wife, Edmund smiled.

"You're awake early," He said voice still thick with sleep as he reached out and brought Violet's fingers to his lips.

"Can't sleep?"

"Then I wish you the best of luck in that endeavor, I try to encourage him myself but maybe your encouragement is just what he needs." Edmund said with a smile.

Benedict had talent, just pride and little discipline.

"I look forward to seeing you succeed, my dear."

Edmund looked to his fiancée of about an hour. He'd never been so nervous in his entire life, so the grin had not left his face since Violet had accepted his proposal.

Taking her hand, Edmund kissed her knuckles.

"Only for you, my darling."

"I know they both find these things trying, but I do hope that they enjoy themselves at least a little tonight." Edmund said, maybe he should go up and speak to his daughters before the party.

"Violet, please don't push too hard, I have faith in our girls. Everything will work out as it's meant to."

"It will be." Edmund promised. Everything Violet did was perfect, though he may be a little biased. Tonight's ball would be beautiful.

"I know." Their boys were strong, always had been. But Edmund still worried regardless, Anthony and Colin had found their way, and Gregory was young enough there was time yet, but Benedict was concerning.

"He seems so listless, and he's stopped drawing, even though it made him so happy. I just worry that he's struggling, is all."

"Of that, I have no doubt." The song drew to an end, and Edmund politely applauded the musicians with the other dancers and bowed to his future daughter-in-law.

"Thank you for the dance, my dear. I believe my son wants his fiancée back, though."
