Fair Trade and us

Fair Trade Certified™ products were made with respect to people and planet. Our rigorous social, environmental and economic standards work to promote safe, healthy working conditions, protect the environment, enable transparency, and empower communities to build strong, thriving businesses. When you choose products with the Fair Trade label, your day-to-day purchases can improve an entire community’s day-to-day lives.

One of the most important aspects of Fair Trade is this: funds are specifically designated for social, economic and environmental development projects. However, we don’t pretend to know what’s best for each community. That’s why we’ve enabled a democratic system where each community determines how their funds are used. Click through the examples below to see how developing communities all over the world have used the funds from Fair Trade to improve their quality of life.

Producers and traders, consumers and companies, all benefit from supporting the Fairtrade system. Fairtrade helps to make markets work for the poor.

The reasons we should buy Fairtrade products are as follows:

It is good for producers;

Stable prices For most products there is a Fairtrade Minimum Price that aims to cover the costs of sustainable production – even when world market prices are volatile or drop below the cost of production

A Fairtrade Premium The Premium helps producers to improve the quality of their lives. It is paid on top of the agreed Fairtrade price, and producers decide democratically how to use it. Typically producers invest in education, healthcare, farm improvements or processing facilities to increase income.

It is good for businesses;

Fairtrade offers companies a way to be part of a global movement, and offers a credible way to ensure that their trade has a positive impact for the people at the end of the chain.

But most of all it is good for the environment:

Fairtrade rewards and encourages farming and production practices that are environmentally sustainable. Producers are also encouraged to strive toward organic certification. Producers must:

Protect the environment in which they work and live. This includes areas of natural water, virgin forest and other important land areas and dealing with problems of erosion and waste management.

Develop, implement and monitor an operations plan on their farming and production techniques. This needs to reflect a balance between protecting the environment and good business results.

Follow national and international standards for the handling of chemicals. There is a list of chemicals based in international norms and agreements, which must not be used.

Not, intentionally, use products which include genetically modified organisms (GMO).

Thus due to these reasons we should buy Fairtrade products.

Today Is #FaceEqualityDay

Today is #FaceEqualityDay

“Face Equality Day is a special day of celebration and action, which helps to celebrate our community, to give a voice to more people with a visible difference, and to change people’s perceptions of visible difference.” - @changingfacesuk Today people are raising awareness to end social stigmas and discrimination towards visible difference. To show support, some people will be wearing butterfly tattoos on their faces 🦋You can also help out by texting FaceEquality to 70085 to donate £5 + your standard network rate message. You can learn more about the issue by visiting @changingfacesuk ’s website and YouTube channel. *Just wanted to mention that while I believe this is a truly important cause to support, it is important to remember that many people deal with non-visible disabilities which can also tremendously impact people’s lives.

❤️ 💙 💛 Let’s keep moving forward in trying our best to keep our minds free of judgments towards others - regardless of appearance!

The Power of Our Evolving Language: A Path to Positive Change Shaina Tranquilino May 12, 2024

The Power Of Our Evolving Language: A Path To Positive ChangeShaina TranquilinoMay 12, 2024

Language is the lens through which we perceive the world, the medium through which we express our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. It's a dynamic entity, constantly evolving to reflect the ever-changing landscape of our society and culture. Our words hold immense power—they shape our interactions, influence our attitudes, and ultimately, they have the potential to drive positive change in the world around us.

As we journey through life, our language evolves alongside us, adapting to new experiences, ideas, and perspectives. Just as technology advances, so too does our lexicon, expanding to encompass novel concepts and innovations. However, the evolution of language is not merely a passive process—it is a reflection of the values and beliefs we hold as individuals and as a collective society.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the impact our words can have on others. From the #MeToo movement to the push for gender-inclusive language, there has been a concerted effort to challenge language that perpetuates harmful stereotypes and reinforces oppressive systems. This shift towards more inclusive and respectful language represents a crucial step towards creating a more equitable and compassionate world.

Consider, for example, the power of pronouns. For many years, the use of gender-specific pronouns has been deeply ingrained in our language, often leading to the erasure of non-binary and gender non-conforming individuals. However, as awareness around gender diversity has increased, so too has the recognition of the importance of using inclusive pronouns. By simply asking someone for their pronouns or using gender-neutral language, we can affirm their identity and create a more inclusive environment for all.

Similarly, the language we use to discuss issues such as race, sexuality, and disability plays a significant role in shaping our perceptions and attitudes. By employing language that is respectful, affirming, and free from stereotypes, we can challenge harmful narratives and foster greater understanding and empathy towards marginalized communities.

But the power of our words extends beyond just social justice issues. The language we use to talk about the environment, for example, can shape our attitudes towards sustainability and conservation. By reframing our relationship with the natural world and using language that emphasizes stewardship rather than exploitation, we can inspire collective action to address the urgent challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

In essence, our language has the power to both reflect and shape the world we inhabit. By choosing our words thoughtfully and intentionally, we have the opportunity to create positive change in ourselves and in the world around us. It requires us to be mindful of the impact our words may have on others, to listen and learn from diverse perspectives, and to continually evolve our language in response to new ideas and experiences.

As we continue to navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us remember the power we hold in our words. Let us use language as a tool for connection, understanding, and empowerment. Let us strive to create a world where every voice is heard, every identity is valued, and every individual is treated with dignity and respect. In the end, it is through our words that we have the power to shape a brighter and more inclusive future for all.
