Agh! I’m so late! How could I be so stupid as to overlook the time like this? I was supposed to be there at 4:30! Not to mention, my phone died. I rush through the snowy streets, doing my best to not slip on any ice. I blink snowflakes off my eyelashes as I hurry to my destination. Why are the streets so crowded? I find myself having to weave between people on the sidewalk and bumping a few.
I breath a sigh of relief once I reach the destination. I’m here for a blind date and we decided on a café for lunch. I walk in, shaking the snow off my jacket as I remove it. The place is packed, but there’s one table that only as one person sitting alone. Thank God, I thought he would’ve left. He’s got a book in front of him, as well as a steaming cup of coffee.
He looks up from his book and we make eye contact. My heart jumps. I smile and wave at him, walking towards him. He waves back, eyes a little wide as his returns the smile. I set my jacket on the back of the seat and sit down.
“Hi, sorry I’m so late. I completely lost track of time. And I was going to call, but my phone died and I couldn’t tell you I was gonna be late.” I ramble as I settle in. I set my purse to the side and quickly plug my phone in to one of the outlets to charge while we’re here. I look back at him apologetically, hoping he’s not upset. He shakes his head.
“It’s fine, don’t worry about it.” He replies. I could tell that he was examining me as soon a I sat down. I blush a little as he holds my gaze.
“Ah- You already ordered.” I say, pointing to his coffee.
“Huh? Oh, yeah.” He chuckles nervously. I smile at him.
“It’s completely fine, I was the one who was late and I would’ve been more upset if you’d have waited for me. You look really good, by the way.” I compliment him. He smiles and looks off the the side, trying to hide his bashfulness.
“You look nice, too.” My smile grows wider at his words.
“Thank you! Soo, what’s that you’re reading?” I ask him, gesturing towards the book.
“Oh, this? It’s a book about a man who found out that his brother is going to try and kill him so he can use his life insurance money. It’s really suspenseful. I like a book that can keep me on edge.” He says, a smile playing on his face. I smile back, leaning towards him a bit as he speaks. As we talk, a server comes over.
“Hello, I’m sorry for the wait. Is everything okay here? Do you want to order a drink or any refills?” She asks. She looks spent. It’s apparent in her tone that she’s annoyed and just wants to be out of here.
“I’ll have a hot chocolate, please.” I say as she writes down my order. She huffs and walks away, quickly.
“She doesn’t look like she’s having a good time.” He jokes. I giggle a little.
“She’s trying. I can tell. Most other servers have a snappy attitude and don’t put a lot of effort into their job. But she still kept her polite attitude, even if her cheeriness was a little on the downside. She’s doing a good job, given the circumstances.” I explain with a light smile on my face.
“Wow, you got all that from a few seconds of talking to her?” He questions. I nod.
“I used to be a server when I was in high school. I know a few things.” I giggle.
“That’s good, it sounds like a good experience.” He replies.
“Yeah, it really was.” It takes a few minutes for my hot chocolate to get here. I thank and tip the server, smiling as I take in the scent of chocolaty goodness.
“So, why hot chocolate instead of coffee?” He asks as I take a sip of my drink.
“Well, it is almost Christmas, so it’s in season. And also, I love it. It makes me feel like a child again.” I say, smiling to myself. He snickers a little as I take another sip.
“What’s so funny, huh?” I inquire smirking as I roll my eyes.
“Oh, it’s nothing.” He responds, obviously lying. I narrow my eyes at him, but go back to drinking my hot chocolate. Once I finish, I place my cup down and sigh, smiling contently. He laughs again.
“Alright, what is it?” I ask again, sternly this time.
“It’s just that... you have some whipped cream on your face.” He informs me. I blush, moving to wipe my mouth with my sleeve, but he stops me.
“Here, use this. It’s much better.” He chuckles, passing me a napkin. I laugh nervously, accepting the napkin and wiping the whipped cream away.
“Thank you.” I giggle. We really seem to hit it off. We talk for about an hour, until we decide to leave and walk around a little. The sun is beginning to set and we’re walking side-by-side, shoulders bumping each other. While we’re walking I feel my phone buzz in my purse. We stop for a moment so that I can read the message and I see I have 12 missed messages from an hour and a half ago.
Park Chanyeol
4:31 pm - Hey, I’m here, where are you?
4:40 pm - Um? Are you coming???
4:46 pm - Hello?
4:50 pm - I’m leaving. Maybe another time...
My eyes grow wide as I read the texts. I look up nervously at the man I’ve been on this date with. He looks back at me with a calm look and a soft smile.
“What’s up?” He asks me.
“Um, I’m sorry, I should’ve asked when I first arrived. But, um, is your name, by chance, Park Chanyeol?” He looks utterly confused at the question and shakes his head.
“No, my name is Kim Jongdae.” He replies.
“Ah, you must’ve thought I was crazy for just sitting down at your table like that. You should’ve said something, I feel so bad now.” I say, placing my face in my hands.
“Well, I definitely thought it was odd that you randomly sat at my table, but I believe everything happens for a reason. Consider it a Christmas Miracle.” He chuckles. “So don’t feel bad, you still had a good time, I hope?”
“Yes, of course I had a great time with you. I’m just sorry for this misunderstanding. I was supposed to be on a blind date with this guy my friend set me up with, but I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t the nicest date I’ve had in a while. Even if you are just some random guy who’s table I sat at.” I smile up at him.
“So, I didn’t catch your name.” He tells me, waiting for my response.
“Oh! I’m sorry. Let me properly introduce myself. I’m L/N Y/N. Nice to meet you.” I say, extending my hand to him. He shakes it and gives me a warm smile.
“Nice to meet you too~”
