“Get on the plane early, or you may end up being late to get to the University.” You grunted imitating your mother's voice as you kept your head down, covered by the hood, trying to hide your face from the rain as you pulled your two suitcases with you along the path the taxi driver said led to the Academy. “Well, Mother, you just forgot one thing, that when I got here it would be night, because the time zones are different, shit.” You shouted kicking a small stone that was in your way.
You had just got off the plane when you realized it was night. You were so stressed about the whole matter of university and country change that you didn’t even remember that when it was daytime in your city, it would be night. You spent half an hour slandering yourself for not having planned it in a better way, before asking one of the attendants at the airport to call a taxi. The taxi took you as far as he could, but when he saw the closed gates leading to the university, he said he couldn’t get past the gates and that you would have to follow the path alone. As soon as you got your bags in the trunk, the Taxi left and you stood in the rain, trying to decide what to do. Something inside you made you look sideways, feeling yourself being watched, and when you looked back, you heard a click that made you and your heart jump, looking forward, looking for where the noise had come.
The gate had been opened.
You frowned, looking for some circuit, to see if the gate was automatic and also looked for some camera, maybe someone was watching you there and decided to open the gate for you, but without wanting to stay any longer in the rain, you pushed the iron gate, listening to him squeak and entered.
The road to the Academy was covered in dirt, with trees on all sides and had not much lighting. The light poles were old and rusted, it would be a beautiful place, if it wasn’t dark and raining. You didn’t want to be there, you didn’t want to have moved where you lived, nor left your friends and relatives behind, but with everything that happened, that was the best you could do. As the path was ending, you could see a large building right in the front, it was a big place, not as big as the campus where you were studying some days ago, but it was still gigantic. Your aunt was the one who nominated this university to you.
It was an extraordinary place to study, she spoke so well from here that you were excited to start your classes, but at that moment, you didn’t want to admire anything, just wanted to dry. As you approached the stairway leading to the door, you climbed the rungs of the stairs, getting under the ceiling and sheltering from the rain. You prayed that someone was awake or that at least the door was open for you to enter, but before you even reached the doorknob, the door opened, loosening for you to enter, and even feeling a chill over it, you entered , dragging your soggy suitcases with you.
The place was great. And old. There was a large staircase that led to the other floor, on both sides, just in front of the front door. At the middle of it, there was a window. On both sides of the entrance hall, has doors. A gigantic antique chandelier illuminated the room and left the texture of the place like royalty, as if you were inside the mansion of someone very rich. The floor was made of wood and shone with the light that reflected in it. There were pictures of paintings nailed to the walls. The walls were fading, but gave a different texture to the place, making it more original.
"Miss (Y/S/N)." You jumped when you heard your name being called. As you looked at the stairs, you saw a woman, dressed in a black silk suit coming down, and smiling at you. You frowned, confused at how she knew your name. "Welcome to the Vegas Academy. I'm Principal Lynn. You've arrived earlier than we expected."
"Oh, sorry, I mistook the time zone and …"
"You're soaked." She said looking at you from top to bottom. “Come with me, I'll show you your room, there you can take these clothes or you'll end up catching a cold.” She said gesturing with her hands. You just nodded, climbing the stairs behind her.
The corridors were not lit with lamp or something electric, but with candelabrum's nailed to the walls every two meters away, so the hallway was a little dark. The corridor windows where you walked were closed and the white curtains as well. The only thing you heard there, beyond the noise of the rain, was the noise that your wet shoes made against the wooden floor.
"This will be your room from now on." She said opening one of the last doors of the hallway before another began, leading to the right side of the building. She came in and let you in too. The bedroom was not a big place, but it was bigger than the dorm you shared with your friend in your old college. You looked around, but stopped when you saw that there was only one bed. “The rooms are individual, Miss (Y/S/N).” Lynn said. Wow, here's better than I expected. You thought. “Make yourself comfortable, tomorrow we'll talk better, okay? The bathroom is at the end of the corridor here on the side, it's the last door. Would you like something to eat?”
“Oh no, thank you. And I'm sorry for having arrived at this time, and I'm sorry to have ... awake you or disturbed you ...”
"Don’t worry, I was awake, I was reviewing some papers." She said, smiling kindly at you. "See you tomorrow, Miss (Y/S/N). Have a good night." And so she turned her back, leaving the room and closing the door behind her. You let out a sigh and looked around the room. You took off your rain-soaked jacket and hung it in a hatter by the bedroom window. And something caught your attention. Looking out the window, through the rain and fog, you could see another big house in the field, probably identical to where you were, which was the university Vegas for boys.
You turned to your bags, opening them and thanking God that the fodder was thick and tough, not letting the rain soak your clothes and personal objects. The first thing you did was pick up your two portraits where one you were with your parents and the other you were with your friends. You looked around, not sure where you would put it, then left them on the nightstand beside the bed, deciding that you would think about it later.
You took a towel and dry clothes, plus some toiletries and decided to take a shower to warm up. Following Lynn's instructions, you followed the corridor at the end of the one you were in, heading toward the bathroom. When you got there, you undressed and finally entered one of the shower cabins, your body thanking the warmth of the hot water after going through all that cold. You took a deep breath before closing your eyes and putting your head under the water, trying to think that all that change would do you good and that it was necessary, but a strange, inappropriate shiver hit your spine, making you got out of the water and opening your eyes at once, as if you felt there was someone who was watching you.
You used your arms, trying to cover your body and leaned out of the Box, looking around, checking to see if anyone was really there, but the only thing you saw were the blurred sink mirrors and the incandescent lamp on the left side of the bathroom blinking, which was not strange to an old structure. The wires should already be corroded.
You shrugged and turned into the Box, lathering and rinsing. As soon as you finished your bath, you took the towel that was hanging outside the Box and dried, putting on your clothes soon after. When you stopped in front of the mirror to comb your hair, you used one hand to wipe the glass that was blurred, but the moment you did it, that light in the back of the bathroom, in front of the toilet cabins exploded, making a flash invade the bathroom and you stifle a startled scream, jumping and turning for once, seeing the shards of the lamp on the floor. You put your hand on your chest, and laughed at your own fright.
After combing your hair, you grabbed your wet clothes and left the bathroom, closing the door behind you. You tried to be as quiet as possible to not wake the other students who should be in their sleeping rooms, but as you turned the corridor, you let out a scream as you nearly slammed into someone, dropping your clothes, letting them fall to the floor and jumping back.
“Sorry.” The tall man said, with a small smile on his face. The messy blond hair, looking like he had just woken up, his fleshy lips holding a square smile, he had black eyes and his eyebrows lowered as he smiled. “I didn’t mean to scare you.”
"No, it's okay, it's just ..." You took a deep breath, still wide-eyed, with the tremors still running through your body. “This is the second fright in less than 10 minutes, so it wasn’t your fault, I was vulnerable.” You smiled at him, bending down and picking up the things you had dropped.
"You are not from here." He said, making you lift your head and look at him while still with your knees on the floor.
“I'm a freshman. I arrived less than two hours ago ... problems with the time zone.” You said standing up. That's when you frowned and stared at him. He should not be there. After all, that was the women's dormitory. “Wait, what are you doing here? I thought the boys were forbidden in the girls' dormitory.”
"And they are, but rules were made to be broken.” He laughed, scratching the back of his neck. “By the way, I'm Taehyung.”
“(Y/N).”
"You said this was the second fright in 10 minutes... What was the other one? Are you scared by the old thing that is this place?”
"Oh ... um ... I was taking a shower and I felt like someone was watching me, and then a lamp exploded right behind me… so I just freaked out.” You smiled embarrassed. Taehyung took a good look at you before biting his lips, shoving his hands in his pockets and shrugging.
“You want me to take a look? Just in case! I'm not the only guy who sneaks through these hallways at night.” He said taking a few steps, turning in the hallway, stopping and looking at you who was holding your clothes against your chest. You blinked a few times, considering the idea of it, until you nodded and followed him toward the bathroom. Taehyung was the first to go in, while you took only a few steps inside, watching as he analyzed the place, looking into the Boxes and the toilette’s cabins. He didn’t look like a bad person, probably should be leaving some room of some girl and you couldn’t blame anyone, he was handsome and he was worth breaking some rules. You shook your head, sending that thought away, as soon as you saw him standing in front of the shattered bulbs. "Yeah, there's no one." He said biting the inside of his cheek before turning to you. “Maybe the ghost of one of the girls who died of boredom at this college came to tell you that you have to go to many parties this year if you do not want to end up like her.” He smiled at you and you laughed, shaking your head.
“I will remember this.” You said going into the hall. Taehyung accompanied you to the door of your room, where the two of you stopped and looked at each other.
“If you want me to show you the city or some cool place, let me know, I'm always out there. And if you can keep my coming here as a secret, I'd appreciate it ...”
“I’ll not tell anyone, I promise.” You smiled at each other. He nodded and turned away, heading toward the stairs. You entered your room, throwing your wet clothes in a corner, using the towel to dry your hair. Through the window, you could see Taehyung running toward the other building, under the rain. It had not been so bad, it seems, even if it had been clandestinely, you had already made a friend.
...
It had been over a month since you were in the new university. You hadn’t made many friends, but you already knew and talked with many of the girls who also studied there, but from the day you arrived there, you hadn’t gone out to the garden, or to meet the boys' university, even now having heard that many of them were hots. You were not yet accustomed to that place, so you went only to the places you needed to go, as for classes, canteen, bathroom, and your room. It was a bit lonely, you admitted, but it was good.
“You’ll go to town tonight, right?” Keila asked as you walked up the stairs toward your rooms. She was your neighbor, her room was in front of yours. You grimaced and she opened her mouth in indignation, slapping your arm. “You've been here for over a month, (Y/N), you need to socialize. It's good to have good grades, but you're going to go crazy if you don’t have some fun.”
“I know, it's just that it's weird to hang out without my friends, I feel like I'm cheating on them." You said, making the girl at your side laugh loudly. “What!”
“I appreciate your loyalty, seriously, but I'm sure they have not stopped hanging out because of you. And anyway, they're there and you're here. What eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel, so try to put on a short skirt or tight pants, because today ,you go to a party with me.”
…
It was seven in evening when you and Keila came to the famous bar she talked about, half of the university was there, because it was technically the only bar in town that accepted new hormone-filled adults in there without ordering gala clothes or good behavior. It was a typical roadside bar, but in the middle of the town, it mixed all the tribes, from the poorest to the richest, from the rockers to the hipsters. What mattered in there was what they were going to drink and who they were going to kiss.
There were several tables in there, and they were all crowded with people, so many of them were standing, drinking glasses in their hands, talking or kissing, while random music played in the boxes across the ceiling. Unlike the bars and pubs you were accustomed to going to, that place was well lit, not sophisticated, but cozy. There were billiards and geek tables for anyone who wanted to play. There was also a small dance floor near those tables for anyone who wanted to dance. There were also some murals scattered around the walls for anyone who wanted to sign his name there and leave his mark. The bar had style.
"Now I'm going to introduce you to the most hot guys of the University." Keila said grabbing your wrist, not letting you pronounce yourself and pulled you toward the pool tables. In passing by some people, you observed where she was taking you and who was playing pool. One of them was bending over the table, calculating his shot, while the other had beer in a bottle, resting one arm on his club. “Hey guys. This is ...”
“(Y/N)! Hi!” The man who had once been bent over the table, after making his move, got up and looked back, and to your surprise it was Taehyung. He wore ripped jeans, black sneakers, a white T-shirt under a thin black sweater, black half-finger gloves, and a black cap, letting his fringe fall over his eyes. He smiled at you and approached, slipping one of his arms over your shoulder and giving you a hug. "I thought you had died of boredom."
"If Keila had not convinced me to come here today, I'd probably be dead by tomorrow." You laughed with him, remembering the joke he made when you meet.
"Wait a minute, you know each other?" Keila asked beside you.
"Yeah, she got me out of Victoria's room the last time I was in the ladies' dormitory.” He laughed.
"Since no one's going to introduce me, I'll do it." The other boy said, circling the table and standing next to you. He had dark brown hair and broad shoulders. He wore a black blouse, pants of the same color. "I'm Jin, Keila's boyfriend."
"You're not my boyfriend," Keila said instantly, making Jin smile at her, and wink at her.
“Yet.” He leaned forward and gave her a kiss.
“Okay, (Y/N) and I are going to get some drinks, meanwhile, try not to have sex at the pool table.” Taehyung said dropping the bat on the table and walking with you toward the drinks counter.
…
Keila and Jin eventually disappeared from the bar while you and Taehyung talked about random things, sitting at one of the tables near the dance floor. Taehyung definitely was not just a pretty face, he was funny and smart too, but even with all that, you couldn’t be attracted to him, not to want to throw yourself in his arms at least.
“Can I ask you something?” He asked while you were watching the people at the bar. You nodded. “Why did you come here? With so many cool places to go, with so many better universities in the world, why did you choose here?”
“Because here it is away from the rest of the world. And I needed that, I needed to get away from some things, some people and some problems. When I first heard of this place, I just thought, why not? I do not have much to lose anyway.”
“And what were you trying to get away from?” He asked again and you bit your lip. You didn’t want to talk about it at that moment. “Okay, forget I asked that, how about we drink some more and then dance like we're not going to wake up with our heads hurting like we're being trampled by a herd of elephants?”
"It's a great idea, Taehyung …"
"Tae.” He corrected you, “Call me Tae"
…
Another month has passed since that day, you and Taehyung ended up becoming really friends, talking whenever you could. You, he, Keila, and Jin would meet at lunch every day to complain about classes and plan what you would do over the weekend, and sometimes at night you slip out of the dormitory into the woods to light a fire and tell horror stories, making jin yell several times, which was the most craven of the four.
Everything was going well until strange things started to happen to you. When you were alone in your room, you felt creepy, you felt as if there was someone there with you. Your things moved by themselves, you left something in a certain place, but when you went back to the room, that thing was in a totally different place. You left the door locked and talked to Lynn about the case of someone invading your room, but nothing had ever been stolen or damaged, just moved. Windows and doors closed on their own, without a breeze to push them. Sometimes you could even hear the voice of a man grumbling something, as if he were complaining about something. The voice was low and soft, and you could not recognize it, and you never found out if it was something in your head or if any of Taehyung’s friends was trying to play a trick on the girls.
One day you woke up in a jolt at tree in the morning. You could not remember if you had had a nightmare, just felt the need to drink water and calm your heart. You went down the stairs to the first floor, hugging your body because you felt the chill of dawn combined with rain falling outside. As you took your glass of water, you were climbing the stairs, heading toward the hallway of your room, but stopped walking when you heard a melody being played. It could be some of the girls listening to music, but you were not sure that some of those promiscuous girls liked to listen to Mozart because that was what they were playing. You decided to follow the melody, and ended up in front of the music room on the second floor. You frowned, wondering who would be there at that time, playing Mozart. You held the doorknob of the wooden door and pushed it in, but at the same moment the melody stopped.
"Okay, this is very strange." You whispered to yourself as you looked around the room and realized there was no one around.
You walked toward the piano and circled. It wasn’t an electric piano, there was no way anyone could have let the music play alone. You looked at the bench, frowning, the feeling you had at that moment, it was as if there was someone sitting there. You shook your head. That was not possible. You reached out to touch the bench, but the loud crack of the wooden window being opened, and the wind and the rain pouring in, made you jump and run toward it, closing it. You took a deep breath and shook your head. You headed toward the door, deciding to forget all that and go back to sleep. As soon as you closed the door behind you, your entire body shivered as you felt like someone had just passed you by. You swallowed hard, trying to ignore the chill that crept up your spine and hurried to your room, where you slipped under the covers and forced your brain to sleep.
The next night was one of those nights where you fled the dorm and went into the woods. The four of them were gathered around the fire, talking about their supernatural experiences, and you decided that perhaps it was time to tell your friends what was happening to you. Keila and Taehyung laughed, while Jin as usual, was scared.
“That's no laughing matter, guys. And if the dorm is haunted? What if the boys dorm is haunted, too?”
"Ghosts don’t exist, you coward chicken." Keila said punching him in the arm, making him wince and look indignant at her. "It could be the wind closing the doors and windows, we are in the middle of the forest, the wind here is usually very strong.”
“The windows open inward, there's no way the wind can come in and pull the windows shut. And I never felt even a breeze strong enough to push the wooden door of the bedroom. And what about the piano playing alone?”
"It should be one of the girls listening to music, (Y/N)." Keila rolled her eyes.
"Of course, as if the girls at that university knew what Mozart is. If I ask one of them what Mozart is, they will tell me ‘Is it any shoe brand?’ "
"It must be the ghosts of the girls who died of boredom who are haunting you, telling you that you have to get laid." Taehyung said as he licked his lips and smiled at you shortly after. You laughed and slapped him lightly on the arm.
"Jesus, stop talking about this, for God's sake, or I'll have nightmares tonight." Jin grunted, making the other three laugh, It was when Taehyung looked serious at once, frowning and squinting, glancing over Jin's shoulder. You who were sitting next to him and Keila who stood next to Jin, stopped laughing and followed his gaze, searching for what he was looking at. Jin stopped laughing and his eyes widened. "What, what are you looking at?" He asked scared, looking behind him, looking for something, and the moment he looked back, Taehyung threw his hat on Jin who screamed and jumped, still sitting on the trunk, losing his balance and falling backward, back to the ground. You laughed at the despair of your friend who stood up furiously, throwing the cap on Taehyung and heading toward him. Taehyung got up still laughing and ran off, being chased by his angry friend.
"Come back here, you son of a bitch." Jin shouted, chasing after his friend. You and Keila got up, knowing it was time to go back to the bedroom. You threw earth at the stake and walked the same path the other two had followed, finding them lying on the ground, laughing at each other.
During the short drive back to the building, while Keila and Jin led the way, you and Taehyung were behind the,, both silent, he with his hands in his pockets and you hugging your body, because of the chill of the dawn. The couple in front hugged each other as they walked and it made you smile, even though she was playing hard to win, you knew she liked Jin, even if his jokes were terrible. It made you remember the good times you had before you had to move, when your relationship was a good thing and not a reason for your tears of sadness and shame.
As soon as you reached the dormitory, Keila and you climbed into the bedrooms, while Jin and Taehyung went to the men's building. As soon as you stepped in the corridor of your room, you stopped walking, feeling that same chill that you felt when something strange was about to happen. The building was so quiet you could almost hear the candles on the candle holder burning bit by bit. You walked again, shaking your head and sending that feeling away. When you entered your room, you closed the door behind you and turned to the bed.
“What the fuck!” You screamed as you see a young man standing in front of your blackboard where your pictures were with your friends and family. The boy turned to you with boredom on his face, staring at you, as if it was nothing strange that he was in your room. You kept staring at him, watching him. He was tall, had black hear e dark brown eyes.He wore a white T-shirt and black pants. The shoes were the same color. “What the fuck are you doing in my room? How did you entered here? The door was locked.” You asked, hoping he would say something, but he just frowned, blinking in confusion. The boy remained silent, he put his hand on his chin thoughtfully, still staring at you.
“Is she seeing me?” He asked loudly, as if he were ignoring you there. “Nah, it’s impossible...”
“Of course i’m seeing you, i’m not blind, you dumbass.” You responded with anger bubbling in your veins. You hated strange people coming into your room or messing with your things. He was not supposed to be there in the first place, the boys’ university was on the other side of the field. The boy’s eyes widened at your words, looking totally surprised. And then he started to smile, staring at you. “Okay, that’s enough! Get the fuck out of my room, or i’m going to call the security…” You said starting to open the door, but suddenly he appeared in front of you, causing you to scream, jump back in shock and fall on your butt. The door closed without him touching it, and you also heard the lock been locked. You stared wide-eyed at what had just happened.
“Wait”
"How did you… How you… What…”
“I’m going to explain everything, i swear, but please, just tell me that you can hear me clearly and not just senseless growlings.”
“I-I can. I can hear you clearly.” You answered, with your whole body shaking. “Who-who are you and how did you-”
“My name is Jungkook. And i’m a ghost."
"(Y/N), are you okay?" Keila's voice said from outside the door. The man in front of you stared at the door and you heard it being unlocked, and suddenly it was opened. The girl came into the bedroom worried, and when she saw you lying on the floor, with a frightened look on your face, she frowned and walked over to you, past the boy's side, as if he wasn’t there. “What happened? Why are you on the floor? Why did you scream?”
“Didn’t you see?" You asked confused, taking your eyes off your friend to look at the boy standing there, watching you both, curious in his eyes.
"Didn’t i see what?" She asked turning back, glancing around the room, looking for something that might be the reason for your scream, but unable to see anything.
"She can’t see me." The boy said, scratching the back of his neck.
"Why?" You asked him, but Keila turned to you with a frown again.
“Why what?” She asked, but you didn’t take your eyes off the boy, hoping he would answer you. Keila arched one eyebrow and followed your gaze, staring at the empty wall beside the door. "What are you looking at?"
"Like I said, I'm a ghost, no one should see me. So I can’t explain how you're seeing me," He responded with normal voice, as if all that were not extremely strange and scary.
"(Y/N)!" Keila caught your attention, making you look at her. She was still waiting for you to respond, but what were you going to tell her? That you were talking to a ghost? With a hallucination? That there was someone invisible behind her? Or she'd punch you, thinking you were doing it to scare her, or she'd call you crazy. You looked at that boy again before you answered her.
"There was a mouse here, I ... I got scared and stumbled into my shoes ... It must have come out the window …"
“Oh, I hate mice.” She said helping you up. "Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm sorry for scaring you."
"No, it's okay, don’t worry, I'll go back to my room then, good night."
"Good night." You smiled at her, but as soon as you closed the door, the smile disappeared from your face and you turned to face the person next to you. "I want you to explain to me what the fuck is going on."
