Text quote: There's this point in Inferno where Dante comes across these two lovers who are trapped in hell. They're kind of being tossed around in a hurricane forever and ever, swept up in this wind for having been swept off their feet in real life.
An extract taken from canto 5 of Dante's Inferno, reading: The hellish squall, which never rests, sweeps spirits in its headlong rush, tormenting, whirls and strikes them. Caught in that path of violence, they shriek, weep and lament.
Now that it's done
There's not one thing that I would change
My life was a storm
Since I was born
How could I fear any hurricane?
Canto 5 extract, reading: As, in cold weather, the wings of starlings bear them up in wide, dense flocks, so does that blast propel the wicked spirits. Here and there, down and up it drives them. Never are they comforted by hope of rest or even lesser punishment.
A black and white illustration taken from Dante's Inferno. In it two figures stand at the edge of a cliff looking up at thousands of souls being thrashed around in a hurricane. The caption reads: "The stormy blast of hell With relentless fury drives the spirits on. Canto V, lines 32, 33."
Text quote: It's based on these two real, historical figures who were murdered for having fallen in love, and Dante in his kind, generous wisdom decides to put them in hell after everything they've been through.
Canto 5 extract, reading: Love, quick to kindle in the gentle heart, seized this man with the fair form taken from me. The way of it afflicts me still.
When the heart would cease, ours never knew peace
What good would it be on the far side of things?
It was too soon
When that part of you was ripped away
A black and white illustration taken from Dante's Inferno. It shows Francesca and her lover Paolo floating in the midst of hell holding on to one another, trapped in a hurricane of souls while Dante and Virgil look on in the background. Francesca has an arm around the back of Paolo's neck while Paolo holds her head. The caption reads: "Bard! willingly I would address those two together coming, Which seem so light before the wind. Canto V, lines 72-74."
Annotation text quote: To be "light upon the wind" is, to some readers, a sign of Francesca's and Paolo's noble ability to triumph over their dismal surroundings; to others, it indicates that they are driven even more wildly than some other shades by the winds of passion.
An oil painting of Francesca da Rimini and her lover Paolo. In it they appear to be floating in the air while holding each other in an embrace, wearing nothing but a loose white cloth draped other them. Paolo uses this to partly hide his face. Dante and the poet Virgil stand in the background, observing them.
Text quote: This song kind of flips that punishment on it's head to say it's no real bad thing, it's no real burden. That if you were gonna fall in love with somebody who you would literally die for, that you'd spend an eternity locked arm in arm with them against anything else.
Canto 5 extract: Love, which absolves no one beloved from loving, seized me so strongly with his charm that, as you see, it has not left me yet. Love brought us to one death.
An oil painting showing the tragic death of Francesca and Paolo. Francesca lies slumped against a bed, head back on the mattress with her light brown hair dishevelled. Paolo lies slumped on top of her, with his head on her chest and a dagger sticking out of his back. Francesca is dressed in a pale blue long sleeved dress, while Paolo is wearing a black jacket and cream coloured trousers.
Though I know my heart would break
I'd tell them, "Put me back in it"
Da-, darling, I would do it again
If I could hold you for a minute
Da-, darling, I'd go through it again
A black and white illustration taken from Dante's Inferno. In it Paolo and Francesca lie in hell embracing one another. The caption reads: "Love brought us to one death: Caina waits The soul who split our life. Canto V, lines 105, 106."
Text quote: The song just tries to imagine that Francesca is not repenting and does not lament, and nor does Paolo. Paolo is silent in the canto, so it was also trying to give a voice to him, and saying, look - I would do this a thousand times, I would do this a million times. There is no life in which I would make any other choice but to love you. And being clung to your side for all eternity is no punishment whatsoever.
An oil painting of Francesca and Paolo. They float in hell, holding on to one another. Paolo looks down at Francesca while she gazes up at him. They are naked, with teal blue cloth draped around Paolo's back and their legs. They both have stab wounds on the left sides of their chest and are bleeding. In the background are the red fires of hell.
Canto 5 extract: When we read how the longed-for smile was kissed by so renowned a lover, this man, who never shall be parted from me, all trembling, kissed me on my mouth.
A Galeotto was the book and he that wrote it. That day we read in it no further.
I would not change it each time
Heaven is not fit to house a love like you and I
A black and white illustration taken from Dante's Inferno. It shows Paolo and Francesca trapped in hell, surrounded by condemned souls. Though they seem to be in pain they still hold on to each other. In front of them Dante lies flat on a rock, passed out with his arms above his head. The caption reads: "I, through compassion fainting, seem'd not far From death, and like a corse fell to the ground. Canto V, lines 137, 138."

HOW COULD YOU THINK, DARLING, I'D SCARE SO EASILY?

hozier's francesca (masterpiece) started playing in the car when i was driving my brother and he only heard the first few seconds and said "hozier's songs all sound like they're his last. as if someone said 'the world is ending you can make one more song' and that's just what all his songs sound like"

he's right.
