It’s actually maddening the fact that people blame Alicent for the mess Viserys caused by marrying a fifteen year old and having sons, and then letting Criston and Otto effectively raise those sons for him. Alicent is a product of her environment and far from a saint, just like Aegon and Aemond are products of theirs, but that is an environment Viserys was as complicit in as much as Otto.
They can’t blame Alicent for her son’s actions when Otto and Viserys, the people with the actual power to hold them accountable, never did. Viserys had his health issues, but he wasn’t bedridden until the very end after he had twenty years to intervene but never did. Every attempt Alicent made to discipline Aegon has been met with the audience crying abuse or calling her a rape apologist while Aegon’s father and grandfather were right there and just as accountable for his upbringing if not more so.
If Viserys had a backbone and Otto hadn’t sold out his daughter the entire mess would have been averted. The war is solely the fault of Viserys.
