August 16, 1966: Cream play the Marquee for the first time, although they had previously played the club on many other occasions with bands such as Alexis Korner's Blues Inc., The Yardbirds, Graham Bond Organisation, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and Manfred Mann. With them on stage is the rarely photographed fourth founding member, a stuffed gorilla. If you can't find a bear, a gorilla will have to do...[photos: Tommy Arvidsson]
"We want a turkey on stage while we're playing. We all like turkeys and it's nice to have them around. Another dada thing - I was going to have this hat made of a brim with a cage on top and a live frog inside. It would be very nice to have stuffed bears on stage. We'd ignore them - not acknowledge their presence at all"
-Eric Clapton - interviewed in July 1966 by Chris Welch, shortly before Cream made their debut.

Happy Birthday, legends!

Ginger Baker's handwritten lyrics for "Pressed Rat And Warthog"
"Ginger writes a lot of poetry and a lot of it's like Pressed Rat And Warthog, really groovy. Ginger wanted to fly his daughter Nettie over to recite that, but we didn't have time. She knows that whole poem by heart."
