I just watched Grave Encounters, and I knew going in that it was a spiritual predecessor of Deadstream and Gonjiam Asylum, but what a pleasant surprise that it also feels so much like House of Leaves. The distortions of time and space create some really creepy disorientation.
I’m wary of haunting movies, because in some of them nothing interesting happens, but this had the House of Leaves vibes, the Poltergeist-style scares, tangible ghosties akin to those more often seen in Asian horror, and some really creepily invasive alterations to the characters’ clothing and bodies.
Yes, this is what I want from supernatural horror: Get the slamming doors out of the way early, then move on to bigger and more creative scares.
