“She's so cute,” Chan breathed, his face contorting with overflowing affection as he very gently stroked the top of his dog's head. He was struggling to keep his tears back as it settled in how much he loved her, and his entire body was riddled with the stack of emotions that had been piling up on him throughout the whole day.
They had mostly been good feelings - but nonetheless, feelings that deep down warranted the release of tears.
“Look at her,” Chan continued as he leaned down to press a kiss to Berry's head. The dog looked up sleepily and nuzzled her nose against Chan's cheek, making the man laugh happily as he curled up further on the sofa and leaned into his wife. “My good girl, yeah?”
Chan continued to thread his fingers through Berry's fur as he dropped his head against Y/N's shoulder, and the dog settled down in his lap again. She dropped her head onto his legs and moved around a little before curling in on herself, eyelids drooping as she faced the TV at the forefront of the room.
Y/N smiled softly as she looked down at her husband. She wasn't sure Chan had noticed it, but his soft features had been set into the tenderest of smiles all day long, and seeing him with such evident joy radiating from his soul filled her heart with warmth. She had seen the way discreet tears had sparkled against the roots of his eyelashes when he caught sight of the food laden dining table earlier on; his parents had both poured their hearts and souls into preparing all of his favourite dishes. Amongst all the food had been the curry he so adored, with extra pieces of meat nestled amongst the colourful chunks of carrot, and the barbecue lamb chops he so often craved had been piled high on a large platter by his father. In the middle of the neatly arranged table had been a generously sized cake from Chan's mother's favourite bakery, his name piped neatly on top of the chocolate.
Chan couldn't remember the last time he had eaten so much. There was something about being in his home surrounded by his family and his best friends that filled him with so much peace and comfort, that Chan found all the stressors that had previously kept him struggling finally melting away. Thus, his mind at last became still, and the man was able to fully submerge himself in the moment. He had thoroughly enjoyed the food, the company, and his mind had taken it easy on him for the first time in a very long time as it provided Chan with the lingering thought that even though it had taken a long time, he was finally where he was supposed to be all along.
Chan cuddled up further to Y/N, seeking out the comfort of her warmth - despite the sunny day that had previously draped its soft heat over them all, the air had begun to feel a little chilly. They had both been tangled together on the sofa for a while now, their legs stretched in front of them and a cosy blanket draped over them. After their fulfilling meal, Chan and his family had all settled into the living room where they had decided to watch a selection of Chan's favourite movies; It was now much later in the evening, and the man's parents had retired to their bedroom for the night. His sister was draped like a sloth over the armrest of a sofa on the other side of the room, her hood dropping over her head and her hair almost touching the floor as she scrolled through her phone. His younger brother was laying on the floor a little away from them all, a book resting beneath his chin and a blanket of his own pulled up all the way to the top of his head. Chan's friends were dotted all over the house; half of them were nearly asleep on the sofa as they waited for another movie to play, the other half loitering in the kitchen. Chan was sure he could hear Changbin and Hyunjin screaming over something in the distance, and it made him chuckle under his breath suddenly, his eyes crinkling with amusement.
“Are you happy?” Y/N asked her husband softly, her hand soft as it ruffled through his curls.
At that, Chan's face softened further. He nodded against her as he continued to smooth his fingers over Berry's fur.
“I can't remember the last time I felt so … “ Chan's voice trailed off as he struggled to find the right words that would encompass his emotions. “Mmm … content? Peaceful? Like … nothing’s missing anymore. Everything is … perfect.”
Y/N smiled. She turned her face a little and pressed a tender kiss to Chan's temple, the soft delicate gesture making him melt further into the curve of her body.
“She really missed you,” Y/N said after a while, nodding towards Berry. She was now almost completely asleep, her eyes tiny slits that warmed Y/N's heart as they reminded her of her husband. “She loves you just as much as you love her.”
Chan chuckled. “She loves you too, you know. She wouldn't be leaning her head on you if she didn't.”
It was true; Berry's chin was a soft weight on Y/N's thigh, her front paws tucked up beside her head and brushing against Y/N. The rest of her body was elongated over Chan's lap, her tail wrapped around her like a mini blanket.
Y/N smiled. She gently stroked her finger down Berry's nose, unaware of Chan's doting gaze watching the gesture with love exploding in the centre of his pupils.
Chan's stomach suddenly gurgled. He laughed in embarrassment and clutched at his body, the sound breaking through the brief quietude. It made Y/N laugh under her breath, and she bit her lip, the both of them trying to stay quiet so as not to wake Berry, her eyes now fully closed.
“I'm still so full,” Chan said, patting his stomach as if to stop the rumbling. “Mum really … she wasn't playing.”
Grinning, Y/N dropped her cheek back down against the top of Chan's head. “She was excited. Your dad too.”
Chan hummed in agreement, nodding slowly against Y/N's shoulder as he reminisced the sparkling smiles that permanently settled on his parents’ faces earlier on. His free hand reached out and he gently curled his fingers into Y/N's, her grip and warm and reassuring against his skin. His thumb began to run softly over the back of Y/N's hand; a habit that he always did when he was thinking, or trying to figure out what to say.
“What are you thinking about?” Y/N asked him quietly as she softly smoothed his curls away from his forehead.
Chan made a sleepy sound, and his words were a little slurred when he finally spoke, his fingers still dancing over his wife's palm.
“You know when I say I don't want presents and stuff … “ he started, his voice a soft lull that reverberated through his chest.
Y/N nodded against him. She knew that part of him all too well.
“It's because … this is the only thing I ever really want,” Chan whispered, his words breaking a little. “Everyone I love, all under the same roof. Good food. Home. Just … the warmth of being where I belong, you know? There's no amount of money, or no amount of gifts that could ever buy this feeling.”
His words were few, but they held a lot of weight; Y/N wasn't surprised when her eyes began to prickle, and she tightened her arm around his shoulders.
“But I couldn't ever say it,” Chan breathed, squeezing his wife's hand. “I wouldn't have been able to come here even if I did say it. So I just … kept quiet, you know?”
“I know,” Y/N murmured against his soft curls. She was quiet for a moment, and then, “You have no idea how happy it makes me to see you happy. You look like you again, baby.”
At that, Chan flushed. He lifted his head and rested his chin on Y/N's shoulder, his eyes soft as he looked up at her. “I feel like me. Didn't realise how much I missed home. I mean ... I have everything I want here. It can't get any better than this.”
“Are you done?” Hannah suddenly grumbled, making both Chan and Y/N look up. “You've been talking like this all evening … it's gross.”
Chan sighed. He rolled his eyes and stuck his tongue out at his sister in a very childish manner, causing Y/N to snort under her breath.
“Go away,” Chan said to Hannah in a mocking voice. “Why are you even here?”
“You go away,” Hannah scowled, though she slid off of the sofa and grabbed the empty bowl near her. “Gonna make some more popcorn. Want some?”
Chan nodded. “Check on the kids too, will you? Don't know where they went … ”
He then tilted his head up to Hannah and grinned at her. “Love you.”
Hannah wrinkled her nose at him. “Ew.”
She left the room, Chan and Y/N both chuckling together at her disdain. Chan dropped his head back against Y/N's shoulder and wrapped his arms around her waist, snuggling up to her as much as he possibly could without dislodging the sleeping dog on their laps.
“She loves you to death,” Y/N grinned. “You can tell.”
“Really? I kinda think she wants to murder me right now,” Chan chuckled, his lips soft against Y/N's neck. “Death in those eyes.”
Y/N started to laugh. “Are you sure you know what death is?”
The both of them cracking up with laughter again, Chan couldn't help it when he suddenly leaned forward and closed his lips over his wife's; Y/N's breath hitched at the sudden heat, and she smiled, her fingers caressing the back of Chan's neck as she kissed him back. It seemed that they were both making the most of the moment without anyone watching them, and when Chan pulled back after what felt like an eternity later, he pressed his forehead against hers. He was breathing heavily and his nose was flushed as it brushed against hers, and he suddenly chuckled, his lower lip caught between his teeth as he stared into his wife's eyes.
“I love you so much,” Chris whispered, lips grazing Y/N’s. “You have no idea.”
“I love you, baby,” Y/N grinned, looping her arms around his shoulders and drawing him closer. “My baby.”
Chan was about to reply with a flustered response when a sudden loud clang echoed from the kitchen, making them both jerk in their seat and hastily pull away; the commotion was followed by a string of incoherent yelling from Changbin, and Berry suddenly jumped, her eyes snapping wide open as she tried to regain consciousness. A moment later she jumped off of Chan's legs, and her paws clattered on the floor as she scrambled out of the room, heading towards the source of the noise.
“What are they doing in there?” Chan's shoulders shook with mirth as he pinched the bridge of his nose. “Sounds like they're trying to set the kitchen on fire.”
“Are you sure it was a good idea getting Hannah to check on them?” Y/N giggled. “She's just as bad.”
As if on cue, Hannah’s voice could be heard as another crash erupted in the distance. Baffled at the chaos, Chan groaned and slipped off of the sofa, stretching his arms high above his head.
“No rest for me no matter where I am,” Chan huffed, though his eyes sparkled with pure joy as he looked down at his wife. He outstretched his hand towards her. “Come on … let's go see what mess they're making.”
Y/N slipped her hand into his, letting him pull her off of the sofa; she lazily got to her feet, and Chan kissed her cheek before pulling her out of the room, his fingers warm and his heart content as he went in search of his family.
