September 23, 2015 at at 4:21 a.m. EDT fall officially begins (or spring for the Southern hemisphere)!

Due to the tilt of the earth’s axis, this is one time in the orbit that the sun will be directly over the equator, the other time being the Vernal Equinox. On this day, the Autumnal Equinox, Earth experiences an equal amount of day and night hours. After this, days will get progressively shorter until the Winter Solstice.
