rewatching Rome and I can’t stop laughing at how the whole conspiracy is pretty much set at Sevilla’s where she keeps finding people and inviting them over to be friends with her son.

It doesn’t help that we’ve been building a whole family feud headcannon with Rome and now the plot to kill Caesar is called the conspiracy at Brutus’s mom’s house.

rome hbo gets exponentially more entertaining when you realize that MOST of what happens is the result of atia and servilia’s middle aged rich lady blood feud. like the whole conceit of this show is that pivotal events in world history were caused by gayle waters-waters and her neighbor bonnie trying to destroy each other over couscous & bruce the orthodontist. they’re taking turns doing wildly fucked up shit and then looking directly into the camera saying “WHAT WOULD YOU HAVE DONE??”

in the commentary, bruno heller makes mention of the dummies they parade through at the triumph, and at that point atia is looking at the dummies, strapped in chains to a cart - heller says, “cleopatra and antony, her antony” - and then she looks to octavian and keeps her eyes on him for a moment. and they talk about what the characters have given up to get to this point, what they’ve sacrificed, and then atia turns away. she struggled and plotted and murdered to get octavian in that fucking chair and has been waiting for this moment his entire life and he’s finally there and she turns away.
