time is hard to keep track of now, but louis isn’t blind to the changes of both himself and the friends around him. he’s started growing facial hair, started losing the baby fat in his cheeks—at least to some degree—and he’s got little patches of hair in places he hadn’t remembered them being before. he’s just thankful to whichever of his parents’ genes that prevented him from having breakouts.
and despite his own body’s questionable changes, he supposes it could be worse. he thinks about willy and the way the boy’s voice cracks over the tiniest things and the plethora of acne that plagues his skin. ah, the joys of puberty… still, louis has other things on his mind besides his friends’ changes. well… most of them, anyway…
his eyes flit over to the girl—or woman—beside him, taking in the slope of her nose from her profile view as they walk. clementine. if anything, she’s aged the most gracefully out of all of them. and louis acknowledges that he is entirely biased, but he doesn’t care. anyone with half a brain could see the beauty clem’s become—not that she wasn’t already beautiful, but, in louis’ opinion, she’d only managed to grow even more beautiful with time.
he’s reminded of the quote from mulan that had never managed to leave his mind even after all these years: the flower that blooms in adversity is the most rare and beautiful of all. and he’ll be damned if it doesn’t fit clem to a T. he wonders if he should mention it to her; wonders if it would make her blush. it’s an entertaining thought.
instead, he carries on about one thing or another—anything to fill the silence between them—and he notices that she’s been quiet, which isn’t anything unusual, but, knowing her as well as he’s grown to, he can tell when it’s an unusual amount of quiet.
“ penny for your thoughts ? ” he asks after a brief pause, brow risen. he knows they need to focus—keep their eyes peeled for anything they could bring back to the school—but checking in with each other while they do it wouldn’t hurt anything.
