His skin seared where he got the dark mark, he wanted to take a knife and cut that patch of skin off. He'd lose James,Sirius and Remus for sure after this. He didn't want to betray them - they were his family, but he couldn't let Philo, his sister who pretty much raised him, die. So yes, he betrayed the only family he'd ever known, he had no choice.
