hikaru ga shinda natsu is about coming back wrong and haunting the narrative and being queer in a small rural town and internalised homophobia and summers that feel like they'll never end and the codependent homoerotic friendship you had when you were 15 and what it means to be dead or alive and navigating a world you feel like you dont belong to and grief and mourning and obsession and love and most importantly, having gay thoughts for the eldritch monster that bodysnatched your friend's corpse

I like how yoshiki never does anything he says he will, not even smth as simple as putting ‘Hikaru’s ghost giblets in a different place.
Hikaru and Yoshiki are a perfect example of toxic codependency. Yoshiki needs Hikaru to withstand the grief of losing his best friend/unrequited love and Hikaru just needs Yoshiki because he literally became his reason to live. As much as I love them, they are not good for eachother.
Up until here anyways. "Hikaru" realizes he is only harming Yoshiki by staying with him. Yoshiki is still grieving and so that's why he reacts like this, and "hikaru" realizes this. He says that he wants Yoshiki to properly move on from Hikaru's death because what they have ISNT healthy. Long story short, this story is so well written.
