Some more A Team stuff no one asked for

In One More Time, Hannibal, Face, and BA are taken to Borneo after being arrested and have to rescue a general and his daughter. The team was informed that they would be alone for the mission. No backup, no assistance. If they get caught they are done. And they do get caught. And the group comes up with a plan to get free, one that starts falling apart in seconds. And there is a moment where Hannibal, BA, and Face realize they are about to die and there’s nothing that their plans, strength, or charm can do to save them.

And then explosions start going off everywhere and Hannibal orders the general and everyone to go straight to the chopper. A chopper he said was useless to them just minutes ago, because there is only one thing all that could be. There is only one man crazy enough to chase after them to a country they aren’t allowed to be in, and has the actual capabilities and drive to do it. None of them had to see Murdock because they knew he would be the only one to do that to save them and they know he’s gonna fly that damn chopper out of there.

And Murdock and Amy where fantastic the whole episode. Murdock is like ‘I’m going after them’ and Amy is just like ‘not without me’ and he’s like ‘whatever, you’re not giving me many options here’ and the two of them are just brilliant

Breakout! makes me pretty sure Murdock had an attitude when he was in the Army. Like the guard tells them the daily schedule and Murdock gives a breakfast order. Someone puts their hand in his water, he calls them ‘squat face’. And earlier two armed men have guns on him and say for him to lose the tail or they’ll kill him and Murdock just says ‘You got it’ before slamming on the breaks.

There are many times Murdock shows that he won’t let anyone push him around, but this episode highlights that. And Murdock again shows how intelligent he is and level headed he can be. He doesn’t lose his head once in the episode. He realizes immediately the kind of trouble BA would be in getting caught, even saying BA shouldn’t have come after him. And when they are trying to escape the hospital he calls Hannibal to direct him to people who need Hannibal’s help more! And when their escape vehicle goes down he gets an idea to use wind power.

The dynamic between BA and Murdock is awesome all through the episode too. They periodically shift who is taking lead, but through the majority of the episode, BA is actually letting Murdock take charge and following his command. It is a reminder that Murdock outranked BA when they were military and BA trusts Murdock completely even though he claims otherwise.

And it’s almost completely BA and Murdock, which is pretty cool!

So I’ve been thinking a lot about what Murdock was like as a Soldier during Vietnam.

So the thing was, in the pilot Murdock said he was once a Thunderbird. In order for that to be true Murdock had to be in the Air Force first and a Captain when he transferred into the Army. It also had to mean that Murdock was one of the Air Force’s best pilots. By the time he met Hannibal and the rest, Murdock was already a very skilled pilot with great maneuverability but he also had combat experience. In Wheel of Fortune, they mention Murdock’s first CIA job had been in 1967. Murdock would have already had his reputation before meeting Hannibal. And while Murdock isn’t the kind of person to brag about his skills, he also knows exactly how good he is and what he’s worth. In that same episode the young pilot says he’s as good as Murdock, to which Murdock laughs hysterically, tells the kid in his dreams and from then on only addresses him as ‘boy’. Murdock doesn’t allow anyone to put down his piloting skills.

In addition Murdock had been in the military for a minute. His first job for the CIA was said to be 1967 as above and they mentioned his ‘escape from Hanoi’ in 1969, which implied by then Murdock was an Army pilot and probably where he got his Air Medal. That would have been around the time B.A. and Face would have joined the Army, since season 5 gives their birth years as 1951. Not only that but Murdock’s career went a bit after the A-Team’s career ended. They robbed the bank of Hanoi in January of 1971, and they were arrested and escaped in 1972 but Murdock was still flying in 1972. Murdock was also in a different unit from the others. A few times through the series the characters expressed surprise if anyone managed to connect Murdock to them and even the military didn’t really suspect (outside of Decker) that Murdock would work with the team. However through the A-Team we hear many stories of missions Murdock did with Hannibal and his men, even ground missions showing Murdock wasn’t just a pilot that took them in and out of LZ’s. He actually went with them from time to time, even getting captured and being a POW with them. And Murdock was in the team picture that Ray kept, showing that even though Murdock wasn’t part of their team the group all thought of him as one in every way that mattered. So why would Murdock, who is super intelligent and a legend pilot by this time hang out with a group of special forces so much and not other pilots?

In Recipe For Heavy Bread, they imply Murdock was a little off from the start. Honestly from my experience with Army Pilots, Murdock wasn’t that different, but who knows. Murdock isn’t really a social person though. The nurses at the VA said Murdock mostly kept to his room and away from the other patients and we also learn that outside of Amy, Face, Decker, and Lynch; Murdock never had any guests. So he really didn’t make any lasting friends. Not outside of the A-Team. And on top of that I think Murdock was a bit of a problem child. Murdock not only has a knack for doing whatever he pleases, but through the series we’ve seen a few times where he encountered a leader he didn’t respect and Murdock had no problem telling that leader to stick it. He challenged Stockwell every chance he got and when Murdock thought for a few moments he was with CIA agents, he still gave them an attitude because he didn’t appreciate how they treated him. I can see Murdock pushing back on the people who didn’t give him the respect he deserved and I don’t see that making him many friends.

But the A-Team is different. Because Hannibal probably saw this pilot and was like ‘finally, a person as daring as me! I have to have him’ and he began demanding Murdock all the time. And Morrison, who was apparently trying to get rid of Hannibal by that point was probably like ‘this is the only pilot foolish enough to go where Hannibal wants. Send him, hopefully they will all go down’. Too bad Murdock was just that good. And Hannibal treated him with respect. He probably had Murdock’s undying loyalty from the first mission they did together. And B.A. fights with him a lot, but Murdock can tell that it’s not out of hate but that B.A. actually likes him. And it’s good for B.A. to have someone who pushes back and just doesn’t let him intimidate them. And Face is new to al this so he’s probably just like ‘ok, things are supposed to be this crazy right?’ And while we don’t know much about Murdock and Ray’s relationship, we know Murdock had an enormous amount of respect for him.

So I wonder if Murdock just felt drawn to this team that gave him the only real space to be himself and just fell in love with them. That these guys are the only team he’s ever needed.
