I Hope Im Not Making Anyone Feel Excluded With My Writing - Tumblr Posts
say it with me: there is no “correct” way to write PoC, because we are not a monolith. literally every type of character you could imagine—we can be that. literally all you have to do is toggle the skin color and culture on your imagination’s character creation screen.
you don’t HAVE to know everything about desi culture to write a desi character; maybe they’re a member of the diaspora and are more distant from their culture. maybe it’s a fantasy world where there IS no desi culture. you don’t have to know everything about the black diaspora and the cultures that emerged from it to write black characters—literally i could repeat this for every single nonwhite identity and it would still be true.
and if you’re going to include our cultures or real world experiences, be open to critique. stop telling us to be satisfied with the bare minimum and no effort, but then turn around and and say you “tried your best and you people are never satisfied” because that isn’t the answer either.
if you can research the dragons of different cultures for 5 hours to figure out how to depict them respectfully, you can do the same service for the characters of color you write.
