Promise - Levi X Reader Fluff

It was pitch black. Only the weak lights of the candles surrounding you kept the lurking darkness at bay. It felt like the flames protected you from the ghosts and goblins, hiding in the corners. You knew it was childish, but couldn't help this ancient fear.

For hours you had been stuck in the armory, preparing everything for your captain’s next mission. He and his squad were about to head off with Paradis' biggest enemy, Zeke Yaeger, as soon as dawn arrived. You had to admit that you were beyond hurt when Levi demanded on you to stay here. The raven-haired claimed that Hange needed you for some special experiments and weapon development, but you felt like he simply didn't want you on the mission.

Why? Only Heichou himself would know.

As you prepared the last set of thunder spears you suddenly sensed a presence. The unsettling feeling of being watched tingled down your spine. Was your sleep-driven mind playing jokes on you? "Cadet," a composed voice suddenly called. You spun around, slightly shocked by the sudden noise, and saw no other than your superior bathing in the glimmer of the candles. He looked stern like always.

"Captain," you breathed, mirroring his short salutation. Levi walked steadily until he stood next to your silhouette.

"Are you done, Y/N? It's getting late."

The hint of a smile crept over your lips as he called you by your first name. It was a rarety for Levi to not call you by your soldier title. Even though you became quite close over the years, maybe even being labeled as friends, you always liked to keep things professional. So you continued the captain-cadet-dynamics around others. But when you two shared a seldom moment alone, you were free to act more softly.

"Just finished the thunder spears. I need to check on the ODM-Gear and then you are good to go," you answered confidently. Levi smirked and nodded. You never disappointed him. More mellow than usual he said, "You should get some rest. I will inspect the gear." While he talked he made his way over to your silhouette, closing the space between you. Your brows furrowed slightly at your captain's proposal. "Levi, your mission starts in a few hours. With Zeke on your ass, you need to rest well to gain strength." An untypical chuckle was heard from the stoic man. He admired you for your bluntness. Not many dared to speak like that in front of their superior. "I'm not much of a sleeper anyway," the raven responded. You remembered the time he opened up about his insomnia during a military party when he had one glass of red wine too much. “Me neither,” you lied. “So we can do it together and get this over with.” You didn’t wait for a reaction, sat on a wooden box, and grabbed the first set of metal. Levi grew irritated and blew air out of his nostrils. Couldn’t you lay off your stubbornness for once? But he knew better than to argue with you and just joined the activity. He wanted to spend this precious time with you in serenity and not in a senseless argument after all.

Seconds, minutes, and finally an hour passed. The two of you bathed in each other's presence like it was the most natural thing. You sat there, next to each other, talking about important and not so important topics. In between, you just enjoyed the soothing silence.

“Are you scared?” you suddenly ripped the comforting chatter with your gritty question. Levi eyed you furtively, hiding his slightly widened gaze. “Scared of what?” he asked casually as his fingers danced over the icy surface of a gas tank he held. “Zeke, Marley, the war itself.” Your voice turned into a mere whisper as if those words were forbidden. There was always an unspoken rule between you and Levi, to not talk about your next missions. You provided a safe space where Titans and humanity’s massacres wouldn’t exist.

But this time you couldn’t help yourself but voice your concerns.

As the pause grew longer you forced yourself to look at the captain. He was focusing on the dancing flames in front of him, clearly in his thoughts. “Yes, of course, I am scared,” Levi finally said. His tone didn’t match the message, since it was too calm. You smiled fondly when you grabbed the last set of ODM-Gear and placed it on your lap. “Good, only lunatics fear nothing,” you answered. “That’s what my father always used to tell me.” Heichou huffed in amusement. From the corner of your eye, you saw him turning towards you, slightly leaning over. When Levi spoke, you almost jerked, because suddenly his presence was so close.

“Are you scared, Cadet?” He sounded so raspy when he whispered. The way he said it almost made it seem like something sexual. Your mouth formed a surprised circle and you felt a good amount of blood rush to your head. You must have screwed on the same bolt for a solid minute now, due to your shock. “I just fear one thing.” Finally, you managed to get a grip on yourself, although your voice still sounded wretched. Levi hummed in return and signaled to you that he was interested in what was to follow.

“I am afraid that the person I love won’t come home one day.”

You could feel your captain’s body heat, mingling with yours, but you didn’t dare to shoot him a glance at that point. It was clear to you that this statement was bold or maybe just plain stupid. The energy changed drastically after what you’ve said and it was hard for you to read the situation. Out of nowhere, you felt Levi’s hand touching your thigh. It was a cautious caress. Nothing like you were used from past lovers.

“I will always come back to you.”

Your digits bore into the metallic surface of the gear like they were able to tear it apart. Your ears must have played tricks on you. There was no way that Levi Ackerman, the most feared soldier, just said something so vulnerable. A tiny bead of sweat grew on your temple, due to your nervousness. What were you supposed to do now? Of course, you daydreamed about something like this, but you always labeled it as such – Just a dream.

“You know, this is the part where I imagined us kissing. You kind of ruined it,” Levi said amused. Slowly you titled your head to acknowledge that his face was just a few inches away. Steel eyes bore into e/c ones. Your sanity melted under his gaze. Finally, you stammered some incoherent words that somehow formed into a sentence over time. “You…imagined this?” Levi rolled his eyes. You really were an oblivious little thing. He thought he made it clear that he was very fond of you, by spending time with you, showing off his favorite tea blends, and opening up about his past.

“If you make this any more awkward, I will ask Zeke if he can just kill me right away,” the captain scoffed. Finally, the rush of adrenaline hit your brain and you practically attacked Levi, as you slung your arms around his neck. You pulled the raven-haired in and let your lips fall onto his. Levi placed his hands on your hips in return, while he deepened the kiss. This wasn’t romantic, nor well planned, like you always imagined, but you wouldn’t want it any other way. This imperfect revelation matched your imperfect life after all. Your lips caressed one another and poured the gooey sensation of fresh love over your nerves. You could have stayed in this sweet bubble of pheromones for every, but you knew that time was against you.

As you peeled yourself from him, you reached for his cheek to gently cup it. “Is this a promise? That you’ll always come back to me?” you whispered. Levi also reached for your face, tracing his thumb over your soft skin.

“I promise.”
