You know I think one of the things that gets lost with making Chopper more of a cutesy, mascot character instead of him being a child having to learn what it is to be a pirate (and other lessons from the other, more experienced characters) is how it diminishes Usopp’s role and growth in turn. Like I’m watching Skypeia and the moment when Usopp puts aside his feelings about the Merry and prioritizes Chopper’s well being, physically and emotionally, is one of the only moments where he is depicted as being more mature than another crew member. It seems like Usopp was being set up to be a sort of mentor for Chopper, exemplifying the pitfalls and shortcomings that the childish worldview they both have can lead to, as well as how one can struggle and ultimately overcome it.
