Summary Vee helps her fellow basilisks pick out names for themselves.

Excerpt The workshop wasn’t quite big enough to let Mona stretch out to her full length and height, but after moving most of the tools and workstations over to one side of the room, there was a space where she could lay curled up. She did so, turning back into her regular form, coiled up in the middle of the room. She let out a sigh of relief and stretched her arms, very carefully, lest she hit a wall or knock down a lamp.

Number Two, still in her human form, walked over and sat down next to Mona. She leaned back against her, lazily scratching behind her ear, which made Mona start wagging the tip of her tail.

”I know I’m a bit odd,” Number Two said. ”But that’s why you love me.”

”I don’t know about that,” Number Three said with a bit of pretend skepticism. She was examining one of mr. Ohlin’s prosthetic legs that he had made himself.

”Stop playing with that,” Vee chastised her. She turned back to her list. ”How about… Zwei? It’s German.”

Number Two frowned.

”Sounds like a dog,” she said.

”Dogs don’t make that sound,” Tetra piped up. She was resting in a swivel chair, flipping through an instruction manual. ”…I think…”

”They don’t,” Vee confirmed. ”Okay, how about Två? It’s Swedish.”

”I kinda like the sound of it, but no one is gonna know how to spell it,” Number Two countered.

”Kaksi?”

”Don’t call me cocky.”

”No, it means two in Finnish,” Vee clarified.

”We’re not Finnished yet,” Number Two sighed. ”What else have you got?”

”Ni?”

”No.”

”Ér?”

”Er, no.”

”Due?”

”Hm…” Number Two stirred. ”Say that last one again.”
