It Makes You Begin To Doubt Whether It Ever Was A Facade - Tumblr Posts

Honestly i think something missed in a lot of fan content that portrays belos and his abuse is his whole "Grandfatherly" vibe he presents and gives to the people and hunter.

Like yes, being cruel and mean ARE part of it, and he certainly tries less to come off that way the longer the show goes, but some of the biggest reasons hunter and the isles were not supposed to really identify how bad he really was had a lot to do with his ability to come off well meaning and sympathetic to those around him.

With hunter, it wasn't just constant shaming and physical abuse, he would smile and intrigue hunter with stories about the human realm, tell hunter he couldn't go on missions to keep him "safe", be incredibly playful about hunter watching him.

It's why hunter was more terrified to upset him, because belos was capable of coming off kind and sweet in his eyes, and that aspect made hunter want to make him happy just as much as want to prove himself. Not just out of fear, but because he had seen belos as a genuine loving uncle who actually did seem to care and needed his help.

Obviously even in these moments belos would still say stuff as bad as implying hunter was replaceable, but how it's being presented is not the same as just being outwardly and openly cruel.

Whether you think it was all lies and manipulation or there were moments were belos was genuine about how he felt (Or maybe an combo of both were his genuineness is used for manipulation), i think people get so wrapped up in his outward cruelness we've forgotten his ability to come off like a sweet and sympathetic father figure that got him here in the first place.

let the man SMILE.

this is so true omg like the whole reason why hunter was so shocked when he learned abt previous golden guards and why he didn't understand why luz and eda went against belos was because he genuinely thought he was a good person that's why hes such a terrifying villain! ! ! because he isn't what you would expect ofc we're introduced to him as this creepy mask wearing figure but hunter (and by extension the rest of the emperor's coven) don't see him luz has an outsider's perspective and so do we! making it easier to tell that he's not a good person but hunter and the emperor's coven were indoctrinated and taught to believe that what they were doing was right for hunter it was more personal loyalty and wanting to help his uncle who was suffering from an illness (like luz with eda! ! !) the emperor's coven is slightly different bc they don't really do it out of personal devotion but more trusting belos and genuinely thinkin he was the right person to guide them and to manipulate that many people you've gotta seem kind at least at first seem good-intentioned like if belos walked up to random ppl and was like 'hey join my evil army' nobody would've let him come to power the key to what makes him scary is that he himself honestly thinks he is doing the right thing and his own self-confidence and charisma allows him to make what he is doing seem good it makes you begin to doubt whether it ever was a facade and i think that was the hope hunter was holding onto up until the collector exploded him he was hoping that it was just a misunderstanding that his uncle really did care and that what he was doing was well-intentioned even if he went about it in the wrong way and then he gets it. he gets the horrifying confirmation of his greatest fear. and that for me is what makes that whole scene where belos first 'dies' so tragic it's not so much that hunter is seeing his father figure get brutally murdered although that is definitely part of it he's finally able to see what luz has been able to see all along idk im rambling
