I will never not be endeared by Joel and Jimmy’s friendship in Empires. Joel can be a little blunt or disinterested in the other Empires at times but, when it comes to his allies, it’s very clear that Lizzie and Jimmy are always at the forefront. When he built the air balloons representing the Empires, he built Jimmy’s first and his, alongside Lizzie’s, were the biggest of the builds because they are close to him. He asks Jimmy to be forst his best man and then his hype man. He dies for Jimmy’s alliance, because Jimmy asked him to, and willingly dives into lava because of said bond later. He’s always there for Jimmy, and he always asks Jimmy to be there by his side.

He’s blunt with Jimmy as he is with everyone else and messes with him too, but where Jimmy is concerned there is always that undercurrent of “this is my person and they are my friend. Watch out.” Jimmy was his very first alliance and Joel took “we could be best buds” to heart.
