Kirron Kher responds to the Indian Government’s decision to ban the showing of the BBC documentary ‘India’s Daughter: The Story of Jyoti Singh.’ In a combination of Hindi and English, she argues that the question is not about whether this documentary will incite further violence or that it should not have been made but rather that the same mindset that gave rise to the Delhi Gang Rape is at work in the decision to now ban the film.

The film India’s Daughter was recently released and documents the rape of 23 year old Jyoti Singh. The documentary has been banned in India where it should be required since India has an extreme rape culture with reported rapes coming in every 20 minutes. The government is embarrassed by the negative lighting it gives to India, a developing country on the rise, and proceeds to try and mask the misogynistic injustices that occur frequently in their country. The documentary is disturbing but it must be watched because this is our reality and shows the injustices women are faced with everyday. Jyoti did not die in vain and will be remembered along with every single rape victim in this world. The documentary is available to view on http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05534p0 but only UK viewers can watch. If you live outside the UK, you can download Browsec on Google Chrome and put the location setting on United Kingdom.
