The Unspoken Tragedy that is Grif and Simmons
Look, everyone knows they should be together. Simmons' feelings for Grif are apparent to everyone, along with Grif's reciprocation, but no one asks why they haven't gotten together officially, despite how many years it's been. No one was gonna be the poor soul who would get rambled to for three hours or more about how "the other doesn't feel that way" and "he'll only see me as a friend" that would immediately come their way.
The thought that Grif and Simmons had just hidden their relationship from the others has crossed the groups minds a couple of times, but were quickly disproven by an ever so blunt, Tucker. Every single time the rumour was muttered around, no matter how dire the time, Tucker would always go to ask the two and nearly every time he would ask, the conversation would go something like this:
"Hey, are you and Grif/Simmons finally a couple?"
Cue either Grif or Simmons being all flustered and stammer-y and replying with, "No! Dude, we're just friends! Besides there's no way he'd like me back."
"Mhm, Sure," Sarcasm would ooze over the blue's voice before he would add, "Just come to me if you ever wanna finally confess."
Or sometimes, if Tucker had decided to be bold enough to ask them while all three of them were hanging out, he would get the following:
"Hey did you two finally decide to become boyfriends?"
The two immediately look away from each other, "WHAT? NO! WE'RE JUST FRIENDS!"
Tucker would let out a sigh, and then move onto the next topic.
To all the Reds and Blues', besides Grif and Simmons of course, it had become watching a train wreck or a romcom writer really failing to write the "will they won't they" trope.
There are no betting pools about if they would ever get together, at least, not anymore, they abandoned those at the same time they abandoned Blood Gulch. There were no real discussions about their relationship from inside the Reds and Blues and only occasionally would they pitch into outsider's gossip, though that was mainly Donut and Tucker.
They just were, and that was okay for the group. Grif and Simmons had become their own thing that no one could drive a wedge into. Even if that impossible scenario occurred, they'd always come back to each other.
The only thing that made them tragic were the refusal. The refusal of the other giving them longing glances, the refusal of romantic feelings, the refusal of wanting to be loved, and so much more that all the Reds and Blues could list. Even when they should've accepted it, even when they had nothing else to say to each other, they would refuse to say it. Maybe, it didn't need to be said. Maybe, what they have now would lose it's magic if they accepted it. Maybe, they truly did only have platonic feelings for each other. Though that last one seems unlikely, but who were the Reds and Blues to say anything about that. No matter what would happen between Grif and Simmons, whether it be them getting together tomorrow or twenty years later, the two staying as friends always pondering what could've been, or something unthinkable, the Reds and Blues would always be there to support them
