THE WORLD IS ENDING NEXT WEEK, but there is nothing much i can do about it. so today i will walk down to the park and sit in the grass. i'll watch a bee flutter from flower to flower. the bee doesn't know it is futile to pollinate a flower that will go up in flames next week. in this moment, i wish i didn't either. THE WORLD IS ENDING IN FIVE DAYS, the headlines declare. the scientists are trying to come up with something, but it will probably only help the rich hiding in bunkers. the cure will never make its way back to me. and i tried to be outraged and indignant and loud. but mostly i am just sad that there is nothing i can do for the homeless woman i see outside my work who always compliments my hair when i dye it a new color. there is nothing i can do except give her a cup of water on my way out, and tell her she has a beautiful smile. with five days left, i know i will never see one more beautiful again. THE WORLD IS ENDING IN THREE DAYS, and i laugh over coffee with my friend that i wish i had made a bucket list or something before i knew the world was ending. wish i had some grand ambition for what i want to do before there is no me left to do it. but mostly i just want to laugh and be with the people i love. i ask my friend what she hopes the afterlife will be like. she talks of clouds and colors we can only dream of and the feeling of freedom. she asks me what i hope it'll be, and all i can think to say is that i hope it feels like having enough time with everyone you care about. and she takes her hand in mine, and promises we will make what time we have left together enough. THE WORLD IS ENDING TOMORROW, so i stay up all night with my roommates playing video games. we scream out insults in between laughter, and congratulate the victor of each round as if they have just won the olympics. and while the moon climbs in the sky, we share our last secrets over dinner. the things we thought we couldn't bare anyone else knowing suddenly feel so small, and the sharing of them so sacred. and when the sun begins to rise, we'll know we don't have much time left. so we'll hold each other tight, and whisper "i love you" until it all blends into one beautiful harmony of last-minute affection. and we will wish there had been more time to do just this. and we will promise that if there is something after the fire that will extinguish us all, we will always do this. we will love each other infinitely with all the time we have. and it will be enough. it will be enough.
