love these lines 😩😩❣️
“I was good. I was really good.”
Hi, so this is my first fic/au, and I’m sure there are multiple ones like this, but I was super excited and had to share. I just kinda tagged anyone who I thought might like it, and I’m really sorry if you didn’t want to be tagged. If there’s any spelling or grammar mistakes, please let me know.
(Also, sorry for people who aren’t reading, it’s pretty long and the keep reading option wasn’t working for some reason)

Neil stands in front of his open window, shirtless. The cool breeze is barely affecting him. He just wanted to feel truly alive and last time before he… well, he knew the life his father had planned for him wasn’t a life he wanted to live.
Neil lays his Puck crown on the window seal. He turns and straightens out his shoes beside the bed, nudges his Welton bag into the corner with his toe. When he does, a piece of paper is shown. A piece of crumpled paper he had pulled out of Todd’s trash can. He had meant to read it. After hearing Todd spill out poetry the way he did in Keating’s class that day, he wasn’t going to pass up the opportunity to experience something that amazing.
He uncrumples the and smooths it out with his fingertips. A life worth living, is scrawled across the top in Todd’s handwriting. Neil continues to read.
A life worth living,
That is the true quest
But would a life be worth living,
If I was living it without you?
Neil sucks in a breath. He tilts the paper closer to the lamp. To Neil, is faintly visible, erased with a rough eraser.
To Neil.
Todd wrote this to him.
Todd.
Neil breaks out of his numb state. He was going to… kill himself? He still has a life, friends, Todd. Why would he willingly choose to leave them? He could- he could run away. He could pack a bag, and leave. Got to the city. Perform on street corners, eventually audition for bigger plays. A life worth living.
And Todd. Neil could never leave him. Todd. He had to see him. To speak to him. Neil shoves a shirt into a bag, a notebook. He pulls on shoes, and a shirt. He still holds the paper with Todd’s writing on it.
Now to escape. His father will hear him if he leaves out the front door. His window. His window is still open. Neil pulls the bag strap over his shoulder, tucks the paper into his pocket, and climbs out his window onto the snow-covered ground. Cold. Alive. Neil nearly laughs aloud. He is alive, and he wants to be. He won’t let his father ruin his life.
He has to get to Welton. He can’t take the car, it’s too noticeable. He could though. Charlie taught him how to hot wire one with Meeks explaining the mechanics of it in the background.
A bike? Or would the snow be too deep?
Walking. He would have to walk. So he did. He started walking and didn’t stop. Adrenaline was the only reason he was still going at this point. That, and the image of Todd in his head.
I. Am. Alive. Neil says inside his head in time with the beat of his footsteps. I. Am. Alive.
………………………………………………………………………………………
Todd lies awake in bed, staring at the empty one across from him. He can’t sleep. Neil getting into the car. Mr. Perry lashing out at Keating. It all plays over and over in his head. He should have just gone over and opened the car door and pulled Neil out. He looked absolutely miserable in there. He should have just gone and got him. Todd rolls over.
Exhaustion is getting the better of him, and his eyes are starting to drift shut when…..
Thud. A dull knock on the window. Todd is instantly wide awake.
Thud again. Todd sits up, and there, clutching the window frame with blue fingers, is Neil. Todd bursts into action, pushing the window open and pulling Neil in.
“Todd,” Neil says, smiling. His ears and face are bright red with cold.
“Neil!” Todd says in a shouted whisper. “What….what….where….what are you doing here?”
“Had to see you,” Neil says. He sits down on his bed and pulls the blanket over him.
“Here, use my blanket too,” Todd says, and then turns around and banks his drawer open, pulling out a pair of thick socks and several sweaters. “Put these on,”
“Thank you,” Neil chatters out, his lips blue. “I fell a couple times and the snow melted all over me,” He pulls his shirt over his head, which Todd notices is on backwards and inside out. And then he blushes at the sight of Neil’s bare skin. Hardly the right time for that. Todd scolds himself inside his head.
The door starts to creak open, and Todd instinctively moves in front of Neil. Charlie’s head peeks in.
“Todd, what’s all the noise- Oh! What did I walk in on- Wait, Neil? What the hell are you doing here?”
Todd quickly gestures for him to come in and shut the door. Charlie glances behind him before slipping inside and easing the door shut.
“So, am I gonna get an explanation for why Neil’s half naked in your room in the middle of the night when everyone thinks he’s at home?” Charlie says with a smirk and a raised eyebrow.
Todd becomes even more red. “No! No, it’s not…” Todd stammers. “I don’t even know why he’s here,” Todd turns to face Neil, who had now pulled on a sweater. “Say, Neil, why are you here?”
“Needed to see you,” Neil mumbles, still a bit out of it.
“Wha-” Charlie starts. “Did you walk here? Through the snow?”
Neil nods, teeth still chattering.
Charlie paces back and forth in the doorway a few times, muttering about “stupid friends” and “compete idiots”
“Alright, well I’m going to go get everyone up, because otherwise you’ll have to tell the story a bunch of times,” Charlie says, and dashes out of the room.
Todd waits a few seconds before saying, “Are you okay, Neil?” Neil pulls the blanket tighter around his shoulders.
“Honestly?” He starts “No. Not at all. But I think it’ll get better.”
They sit in comfortable silence for a while, until Charlie slips in the door again. He’s dragging the rest of the Poets behind him, all still in various stages of waking up.
“So,” Charlie says once they’re all settled around the room. “You may be wondering why I’ve woken you boys up in the middle of the night.”
“I swear to god, Charlie, if this is another one of your jokes or something-” Cameron starts, and then he spots Neil under the pile of blankets beside Todd. “Neil?”
Everyone who was still fighting sleep suddenly jerks awake.
“Yeah, um, surprise!” Neil says weakly. Cameron is stuttering now.
“What on earth are you doing here?”
“Hush, Cam,” Charlie says, clapping his hand over Cameron’s mouth. “Let Neil tell us,” He then pulls his hand back quickly. Cameron’s face flushes red at Charlie’s touch, and even Charlie ears are tipped red.
“Neil?” Todd inquires.
“Erm, where to start,” Neil says.
“What happened after you got home?” Pitts says from the corner.
“Well,” Neil starts, “My father was very angry. He….He was going to send me to military school.” He pauses “That wouldn’t have been much of a life for me and I…. I was going to kill myself.”
The room went eerily silent. Then, “What. The. Actual. Hell, Neil?” Todd angry whispers. “You were going to kill yourself? What about us?”
“I know, I know,” Neil says, a pained look on his face. “I… I don’t know what I was thinking.”
“I’ll tell you what,” says Charlie. “You weren’t thinking. There’s no way that Neil Perry would think to just give up,” Charlie’s usual sarcastic, tough exterior is cracking now. He simply can’t imagine losing Neil.
Him and Neil have been friends for years. When Neil found out he got his first major acting part, he made sure to tell Charlie. After the play, Charlie was the one who tried to push past Mr. Perry to congratulate Neil.
“Well, we’re going to have to make a plan for something.” says Meeks. “Your dad’s going to realize sooner than later that you’re not home. Welton will be the first place he checks.”
“The cave…” Pitts starts, but Todd interjects.
“No, absolutely not. He’ll freeze.”
The Poets are all silent for a while.
“The cabin!” Todd practically shouts. After being shushed, he explains.
“My brother has a little cabin outside of town, where he’d go to hang out with friends. It’s insulated, and has heaters,” he glances at Neil. “It’d be perfect. Safe, and it’s been kept a secret to everyone except me, my brother, and his friends. They’re all away at college, so nobody will ever be there.”
“Alright, we’ve got a location,” Charlie says. “How are we gonna get him there?”
“Keating…?” Pitts starts.
“No, no, we can’t bring him into this,” Neil says, “it’s bad enough that all of you guys will have to keep my secret, but Keating can be charged as an adult. If anyone finds out he knows where I am and hasn’t told them…”
“We could-” Knox starts, the first thing he’s said in all of this. “Um, Chris has a car. I could, uh, ask her to borrow it,” he pauses “if you’d trust her with this,”
“I think we’re gonna have to,” Charlie says.
“Alright, we have a plan. It’s the middle of the night though, so we can’t exactly ask Chris to borrow her car right now. We’ll wait until morning, and go then.” Everyone shares murmurs of agreement, and then Charlie says “Okay, we can’t do this if we’re exhausted though. Everyone back to bed.”
One by one, the Poets stop by Neil to clap his shoulder, or in Pitts case, give him a bear-hug. Charlie leaves last, and he winks at Todd before shutting the door behind him. Neil and Todd sit in the dimly lit room for a few moments and Todd is blushing furiously. Charlie very clearly knew how he felt about Neil. But did Neil know?
“Neil,” Todd says, and at the exact same moment, Neil says, “Todd,” . They both let out a short laugh.
“After you,” Neil says.
“No, no, I’d much rather you went first, please,” Todd says.
“Well, um, alright,” Neil says, and pulls out a piece of crumpled paper. A piece of paper that Todd very clearly remembers throwing in his garbage bin. Todd’s heart jumps wildly in his chest.
“I, er,” Neil starts. Is he blushing? “I’m sorry for going through your discarded things but my curiosity got the better of me,”. He hands the paper to Todd, who already had the words on it memorized in his head.
“Did you write this to me?” Neil asks.
Shit. Shit. Shit. Todd repeats in his head.
“Neil, if you don’t feel that way about me, or you already-” Todd bursts out, but Neil cuts him off.
“I don’t feel that way about you?” Neil laughs a little. “Todd, I’ve been trying to drop hints for weeks now, hoping you might have the slightest interest in me. This poem,” he breaks off. “Todd, this poem is the reason I didn’t kill myself.”
Todd sits in stunned silence.
“I….you….oh my god,” Todd finally says.
“Yeah,” Neil agrees. He stands and moves towards Todd.
“May I?” Neil gestures to the spot on the bed beside Todd.
“Uh, yeah, sure,” Todd says, and Neil sits down.
Hesitantly, Neil places an arm around Todd, and leans his head on his shoulder. Todd is sure Neil must be able to hear his pounding heart. Slowly, so very slowly, Todd wraps his arm around Neil. And then Neil turns toward Todd and says, “Todd, can I kiss you? I really want to kiss you right now.”
Todd sucks in a breath, but manages to let out a strangled “Yes.”
And just like that, Neil is kissing him. It’s soft and sweet, and it completely overwhelms Todd’s senses. He can smell Neil, he can taste Neil. He can hear Neil sharply inhale. He can feel Neil move his hand to the side of Todd’s face. If he opened his eyes, he would see Neil too, but there’s no possible way for Todd to open his eyes in a moment like this.
Neil pulls back, and Todd follows, and then jerks back quickly, blushing.
“Wow,” Neil says simply.
Todd looks down, but Neil tilts his chin up and starts kissing him again
“We should really-” Todd says between kisses, “go to sleep. It’s late,”
Neil breaks off, and says, “uh, yeah, right,”. He clears his throat.
Todd moves to stand and return to his own bed, but Neil says suddenly, “Wait, Todd,”. Then a bit more bashful, “ Would you- would you stay with me? Just to sleep?”
“Yeah, of course,” Todd says. “Besides, you’ve got all my blankets anyways.” Neil laughs, and Todd’s heart soars.
Todd lies down, his back to the wall, and wraps his arms around Neil, who lies with his back to Todd chest.
Todd feels quiet, peaceful. He knows that tomorrow will be filled with problems, but he also knows that now he will be able to face those problems with Neil. And he falls asleep.
