You say nothing, so his hands reach for yours, holding them and trying to soothingly rub his thumbs over your skin. "What's up, sweetheart?" He asks quietly, looking up at you, but you just shake your head, softly sniffling.

"What do you want?" He asks instead, pulling you closer inch by inch. Close enough that he can hold you if that's what you want.

When you speak, your voice is so painfully quiet— it cracks in the middle and it sounds rough, like you've been crying a while. "Can I have a hug?"

He leans his head against yours, hoping his weight will remind you that he's here, and he'll hold you for as long as you'd like. "Sure, sweetheart," is mumbled into your hair. He doesn't mind the way you tremble in his hold, the way your tears stain his shirt. He just holds you tighter, closer. Hopes you can feel the beat of his heart in his chest, hopes it gives you some comfort.
