quick tips:

season one doesn’t deal with the machine itself much, but rather its creation by harold finch and nathan ingram (told in flashbacks), as well the aftermath of choices they made as it was built. this ties in with reese’s former employers, carter’s hunt for the man in the suit, and the introduction of the hacker known as root.

season two begins the show’s shift towards a more serialized form of storytelling, with equal amounts of stand-alone “irrelevant” episodes and mytharc heavy machine episodes. ‘relevance’ is a must-watch for the introduction of sameen shaw; relevance also serves as a pseudo backdoor pilot to the new, serialized version of the show.

season three splits itself into two halves. the first half primarily deals with the procedural/corrupt cop aspect of the story, culminating in the death of one of the main characters. those episodes are not listed, as they have nothing to do with the machine’s storyline. the final takedown of HR (and the completion of many characters’ stories) can be seen in episodes 308-310. the back half of season 3 is almost entirely serialized, and entirely awesome.
