Now with Yelena’s (possible) thoughts.

Kate: so, I heard you like bad girls

Yelena: (you heard wrong. Natasha said it was bad after I confessed to being a morosexual.)

Kate: well *laughs* I’m bad at everything

Yelena: (oh god, oh god, I’m going to marry this idiot one day, aren’t I?) *looks down*

Yelena: you’re standing in wet cement (fml, she’s perfect)

Kate: so, I heard you like bad girls

Yelena:

Witches, in fact, undergo the opposite metamorphosis. Highlighting for the ecological niche or witches and wizards are extremely compatible for apex predators who should be in constant conflict.

A witch is ‘born at home’. Sometimes this means biologically from an older witch who is preparing to leave her home and enter her migratory stage (nearly always, in such cases, with the fantastical illusion of her death being the symbolic spark of her migration and given rise of her progeny’s inheritance of the home. As if a witch, one born of home and hearth, could burn!). Other times by leaving her home empty, all her herbs, cauldrons, and sundries patiently waiting and covered in gathering dust. For what witch does not enjoy ‘wiping out’ out old whilst claiming a home for herself? Thus letting the home itself mystically birth a new witch from the raging indignity and need of a woman wandering in.

The migratory witch, being well learned and done with this shit, carries with her only what she’s going to need in a suitably sized handbag. Which for reasons known only to them are never as big as a backpack and never smaller than a loaf of bread. From which she can, as needed, pull out any meal, potion, or temporary house she might desire. Never a permenant house though. For they are homes and she has left home.

Not many people understand the migratory pattern of witches because they are cursedly hard to find when of such an age. Just as wizards are excitable and chaotically loud when migrating but quiet and reclusive (some might even say shut ins) when older witches too alternate this. A witch at home is very noticeably a witch at home. They may hide from constables or nay’er-do-wells but they are social and extroverted with neighbours and random passersby’s in need. One need not look long to find someone who knows both where they live and how to get there. Older wizard who’ve settled in the area are not very likely to talk to anyone long enough to ask. Thus the two may comfortably settle in the same area.

Migratory witches, however, are outstandingly secretive. They will go to great lengths to hide themselves (sometimes even in plain sight). Such that even if a young wizard were curious he’d be unlikely to surpass her cunning to find her. After all, he cannot fathom why his granny might be a person worth questioning about such a thing. For even in their migratory stage many witches are still drawn to helping other ‘learn a thing or two’.

I feel like witches are sedentary and wizards are migratory. A witch has a home, a cauldron, herbs, you go to them with your problem. A wizard wanders, disappears, shows up at inconvenient times to fix nothing. am i making sense

Natasha: We’re just gonna

Yelena: take you with us.

Kate (almost excited): Am I being kidnapped?

Natasha: No

Yelena: no, no

Natasha: no.

Kate (curious): Can I leave?

Natasha and Yelena (softly in tandem as they gently grab Kate’s arms): No.

Kate (willingly going along): Feels a bit like kidnapping.

Yelena: Yes, well,

Natasha: if this was a kidnapping you’d probably be unconscious

Yelena: from my thighs around your neck.

Kate (hopeful): Can it become a kidnapping? Asking for a friend.

Natasha: You were asking for yourself.

Kate (sad): Am I not your friend?

Natasha and Yelena to werewolf Kate after their initial plan went to shit and the red rooms are now onto all three of them

People, especially games, get eldritch madness wrong a lot and it’s really such a shame.

An ant doesn’t start babbling when they see a circuit board. They find it strange, to them it is a landscape of strange angles and humming monoliths. They may be scared, but that is not madness.

Madness comes when the ant, for a moment, can see as a human does.

It understands those markings are words, symbols with meaning, like a pheromone but infinitely more complex. It can travel unimaginable distances, to lands unlike anything it has seen before. It knows of mirth, embarrassment, love, concepts unimaginable before this moment, and then…

It’s an ant again.

Echoes of things it cannot comprehend swirl around its mind. It cannot make use of this knowledge, but it still remembers. How is it supposed to return to its life? The more the ant saw the harder it is for it to forget. It needs to see it again, understand again. It will do anything to show others, to show itself, nothing else in this tiny world matters.

This is madness.

Health And Hygiene Inspector (Class D- Small Retail Food Storage and Service) Billie Lestrade really wishes she knew how to kill vampires. This is, of course, something she’d mentioned in passing to her girlfriend when they had first started dating. It had never been brought up again when she was just Billie Lestrade. It’s brought up at least twice a week once she becomes Health And Hygiene Inspector (Class D- Small Retail Food Storage and Service) Billie Lestrade.

Her girlfriend is a little concerned. She wonders at the strange correlation between becoming certified as a Health And Hygiene Inspector (Class D- Small Retail Food Storage and Service) and Billie’s weird obsession with learning how to kill fictional bloodsuckers. And murders. Slightly concerning that she knows so much about recent (and not so recent) murders in the area. She should maybe ask Billie to talk to someone about that. Or talk to someone for her.

Billie’s mom, when asked about it, laughs uproariously. No further explanation is forthcoming.

Sherlock Holmes modern adaptation but the main characters (Sherlock, Watson, Mrs. Hudson, Irene Adler, and maybe even Lestrade) are all vampires and they’ve just been doing their thing since the time period of the original books

Irene gets to be from New Jersey like she is in canon and she’ll occasionally show up and help Sherlock with a case but they don’t ever date or hook up or anything

When is a monster not a monster?
Oh, when you love it.
There is a crack in everything.
That's how the light gets in.
I will soothe you and heal you
I will bring you roses
I too have been covered with thorns
Pylades: I'll take care of you.
Orestes: It's rotten work.
Pylades: Not to me, Not if it's you.
Tell me every terrible thing you ever did, and let me love you anyway.
Love is insane you feel like you're always subtly asking "do you still love me even though i'm flawed" and the answer just keeps being yes
H of H:
I cannot rise. Too heavy with filth and sin.
Th:
Give me your hand.
H of H:
I'll stain you.
Th:
I'll take it.
Love alters not with his brief hours
and weeks,

But bears it out even to the edge of
doom.
I will love you when you are a still day.
I will love you when you are a hurricane.
I didn't fall in love, I rose in it. I saw you and made up my mind.

Love as Acceptance

I’d love to see this as a series of short stories. Each one ending with the main protag dying in the woods from various causes. Or even a ‘choose your own adventure’ book and all the options seem benign but highlight how knowing nothing about wilderness survival is a bad match for surviving being in the wilderness.

***

“The sun sinks slowly towards the horizon. At home you’d be lighting the candles and readying for bed. You’re sure it’s just another few miles to the nearest town.”

Continue toward town (page 57)

Stop and set up shelter (page 43)

“You choose to push on to town and the promise of safety. A wise choice, you are sure, given the pressing nature of your quest. The world depends on you. You cannot falter. The sun glows orange where it kisses the land. Shadows stretch ever deeper. You shiver in the chill of darkness thinking it funny how you’d never noticed how much the sun warmed you before. The shawl you’d grabbed for the walk seems to open to the wind’s touch.

The ever present sound of insects fade. Dying with the light of day. The trees creak and your head snaps to every groan of complaints. It is quieter in the dark and so all things speak louder. You can’t quite remember if wolves hunt at night. The fast beat of your heart betrays the worry that they do.

The light has faded now. Only stars and the faded glimmer of the hidden moon still let you see. You squint at the deceptive ground in hopes of spotting where it flees from you. A few stumbles are a small price to pay in order to save the world.

Your ankle, still sore from the last stumble, lands wrong on a rock and twists. Your body twists with it and you find yourself falling down a small ditch. Likely the drainage ditch you think in the barest second of free fall. You hit something thin and solid before plunging into cold wet muck. It coats you from thigh to shoulder. The coldness steals your breath. Thankfully, your ankle feels fine.

You’d chosen to push on and now, covered in mud, you have no choice. Movement should keep you warm and you’re wearing a shawl, albeit one still damp from the drainage. Stopping now to make a fire might take hours anyway. You don’t know how to make one, after all. You decide to keep walking.

And walking.

Your shivers stopped a while ago but your hands feel oddly numb. Distant. The world feels distant from you. Your thoughts slow and placid. You keep walking. Until you fall. You think to get up. But you do not. You are very tired. Perhaps. Just a small nap. Before yo-“

Your character dies in the woods.

I want to write a book called “your character dies in the woods” that details all the pitfalls and dangers of being out on the road & in the wild for people without outdoors/wilderness experience bc I cannot keep reading narratives brush over life threatening conditions like nothing is happening.

I just read a book by one of my favorite authors whose plots are essentially airtight, but the MC was walking on a country road on a cold winter night and she was knocked down and fell into a drainage ditch covered in ice, broke through and got covered in icy mud and water.

Then she had a “miserable” 3 more miles to walk to the inn.

Babes she would not MAKE it to that inn.

Tiffany couldn't quite work out how Miss Level got paid. Certainly the basket she carried filled up more than it emptied. They'd walk past a cottage and a woman would come scurrying out with a fresh-baked loaf or a jar of pickles, even though Miss Level hadn't stopped there. But they'd spend an hour somewhere else, stitching up the leg of a farmer who'd been careless with an axe, and get a cup of tea and a stale biscuit.

It didn't seem fair.

“Oh, it evens out,” said Miss Level, as they walked on through the woods.

“You do what you can. People give what they can, when they can. Old Slapwick there, with the leg, he's as mean as a cat, but there'll be a big cut of beef on my doorstep before the week's end, you can bet on it. His wife will see to it. And pretty soon people will be killing their pigs for the winter, and I'll get more brawn, ham, bacon and sausages turning up than a family could eat in a year.”

“You do? What do you do with all that food?”

“Store it,” said Miss Level.

“But you-”

“I store it in other people. It's amazing what you can store in other people.” Miss Level laughed at Tiffany's expression. “I mean, I take what I don't need round to those who don't have a pig, or who're going through a bad patch, or who don't have anyone to remember them.”

“But that means they'll owe you a favour!”

“Right! And so it just keeps on going round. It all works out.”

“I bet some people are too mean to pay-”

“Not pay,” said Miss Level, severely. “A witch never expects payment and never asks for it and just hopes she never needs to. But, sadly, you are right.”

“And then what happens?"

“What do you mean?”

“You stop helping them, do you?”

“Oh, no,” said Miss Level, genuinely shocked. “You can't not help people just because they're stupid or forgetful or unpleasant. Everyone's poor round here. If I don't help them, who will?”

Alright, but I feel we’re all sleeping on cultural miscommunication (but not the way you think). Lena creates something to help Kara against kryptonite in an emergency but for science reasons it can only be either a necklace or a bracelet. Given bracelet’s are easier to hide as Kara she makes it that. Lena knows about the Kryptonian marriage customs so double checks it’s okay before gifting it to Kara. Happiness.

Fast forward a few months and Supergirl uses her new protective bracelet publicly. The public collectively gasps. They know as much as they could learn about Kryptonian culture including about marriage bracelet’s. Assumptions are made and one bold reporter asks where Supergirl got the life saving bling. Kara’s always happy to talk about her bestie and goes into a loving rant about Lena’s awesome design skills and isn’t it cool how she’s keeping Supergirl safe. It’s very *hint-hint* *nudge-nudge*. Kara thinks she’s subtly saying Lena is good, not bad, and please stop saying bad things about her. What the public hears is ‘doesn’t my wife love me so much’.

The cultural miscommunication was ‘actually, that is my culture but we were going by yours’.

So now everyone and their dog assume Lena Luthor is married to Supergirl and has been for months. Which Lena is fine with but she’d really like to know how Mrs. Morrision’s dog can talk. The news has said much worse things about her after all. Kara’s all “oh no! I caused this, I’ll fix it!” And proceeds to do everything to make it worse.

Including denying very vocally they aren’t together and when asked if she doesn’t find Lena attractive turning into a beat red stumbling mess and accidentally breaking the studio. Explaining the Kryptonian marriage customs they did not do (because they are not married) and causing a public outcry about how Supergirl and her wife are being prevented from honouring her cultural customs. There’s a vote to turn the sun red for a day. Lena’s vastly amused about how people are petitioning to let her do what Lex is in prison for.

Kara’s increasingly flustered leading to even more horrible attempts to fix things. Lena’s just going with the flow and living the dream. Culminating in Supergirl giving Lena a cheek kiss goodbye absentmindedly (because Lena’s been teasing her about how wives say goodbye) and it getting caught on camera. Alex starts dropping ‘subtle’ hints about how it’s be okay if Kara and Lena were actually together. (Kara may have learned her subtly from Alex).

Then the envoy from the galactic counsel arrives to congratulate Kara Zor-el for wedding into the ruling House of Earth. Kara’s all ‘just shoot me now’ because this means her mother knows. Alex’s all ‘why, you wouldn’t even feel it?’ Lena steps up to correct the assumption finally (but she really is kinda the ruling House of Earth). Kara’s mom immediately goes “but would you like to?” And proceeds to attempt negotiating the marriage between Kara and Lena. Only for Lillian to rush out of where she’d been watching with a counter offer.

The betrayal! But really, exactly who they’d want for their beloved daughter completely with sound business reasons for a merger. Plus they adore each other. Kara and Lena share a look because they know they just went from ‘fake’ married to accidentally courting/married in two seconds flat.

i would kill for a supercorp fake dating/married fic but like, not an au. canon compliant. like can you imagine

Lois: Consider, I give you Clark. You give me the Lasso. Fair trade.

Diana: *sigh* Lois, no. For the last time I can’t give you the Lasso of Hestia. I can only let you borrow it.

Lois: Alright. Let me think. Ah! You let me borrow the Lasso for the next sixty- no, seventy years. 😁

Headcanon

Things Lois Lane does not envy Wonder Woman:

Her friendship with Superman. Lois knows that they’re close friends and nothing more, and that her own relationship with Clark is deep and pure.

Her power and respect. Wonder Woman has earned that and more.

That goddamn lasso

Why do you even need a truth lasso Diana

Think of all the stories she could get with that thing goddammit

[Image ID: The PoemOne Source Of Bad Information, By Robert Bly.Theres A Boy In You About Threeyears

[Image ID: The poem “One Source of Bad Information”, by Robert Bly.  There’s a boy in you about three years old who hasn’t learned a thing for thirty Thousand Years. Sometime it’s a girl.  The child had to make up its mind How to save you from death. He said things like:  “Stay home. Avoid elevators. Eat only elk.”  You live with this child, but you don’t know it.  You’re in the office, yes, but live with this boy  At night. He’s uninformed, but he does want To save your life. And he has. Because of this boy  You survived a lot. He’s got six big ideas.  Five don’t work. Right now he’s repeating them to you.

Edit of xkcd comic 2501: Average Familiarity. Two characters are speaking with each other.
The conversation now reads, "Hidden Search Operators are second nature to us, so it's easy to forget that the average user probably only knows summary: string and expected_number_of_chapters: 1. And OTP:true, of course. Of course."
The caption underneath the comic now reads, "Even when they're trying to compensate for it, AO3 volunteers wildly overestimate the average person's familiarity with their site."

For anyone who hasn't seen them before, Hidden Search Operators are handy tricks you can use when you're either searching or filtering AO3.

summary: string is a generic way of explaining that you can search AO3 for a specific word that appears in a summary. You can do this from the search bar in the header, from the Any Field box at the top of the Advanced Search form, or from the Search Within Results box at the bottom of the filter menu.

Examples:

summary: Bruce

summary: "Bruce Banner"

summary: Bruce OR summary: Banner OR summary: Hulk

You need to put quotation marks around your search term if it is more than one word. The quotes make sure that the site searches for those two words together.

The other two operators listed work best in the Search Within Results box.

expected_number_of_chapters: 1 will return results where every fic has only 1 chapter currently posted.

You can use expected_number_of_chapters: -1 if you want results where every fic has more than 1 chapter currently posted.

otp:true will return results where there is only 1 relationship tag on the fic. If you want results where there are 2+ relationship tags (and no fics with only 1 relationship tag) then you can use otp:false

Another point for why it’s important to own your own copies of music and media, and not use streaming services, is because the copy you own can’t be taken back.

(This is also a good time to remind people that yout*be to mp3 converters still exist).

In response to Slate's article on the possibility having non-heteromative team in figure skating (particularly, ice dance and pairs), Oniceperspective shared a glimpse of Gabriella Papadakis (FRA) and Madison Hubbell (USA) working on their same-sex program. You can see how they switch the leading figure between them.

You can see them trying out lifts in this video.

“You watched my video?”

“I always watch your videos.”

“… you know that’s a little creepy, right?”

“Bro,” *deep sigh*, “you only post videos at 2 am after you leave Arby’s having fed your munchies and being sufficiently high not to care about the fact your ex, who cheated on you with your best friend, in still your Facebook friend.”

“… it’s even creepier you know that.”

“I work at Arby’s. At 2:15 am there’s pretty much nothing to do but watch your videos or my great aunt Mrytle’s cat birthday party video. And while Mittens gets banger presents she doesn’t share all her deepest secrets to the random Arby’s employee like you do.”

“Oh.” “Is that why you tripped Kevin?”

“Absolutely. Your life is better than reality TV. I’m invested.”

“… sorry about the whole ‘trapping you in a death labyrinth thing.”

“Sorry about finding out your ex and your best friend are now engaged in the worst way possible.”

“Ugh, why do they even watch my videos?”

Horror isekai where Perceiving the Weird Eldritch Thing gets you catapulted into a nightmare labyrinth of puzzle-solving.

I.e Those Who Perceive The Hunt of the Goblin King Must Partake In The Labyrinth and Can Only Be Freed If They Complete It In One Day and One Night. By Fae Law. For Reasons.

But the definition of “perception” clearly needs to be updated because some normal guy simply films the Hunt of the Goblin King Behind Arby’s, and puts it on Facebook -

No, not instagram or TikTok, it’s important that it be Facebook -

Because the rules are pretty clear, “the rules are the rules” as is carved ominously in elvish runes above the grim gate, and the Contract is Sealed. and so therefore the guy and 25 of their most random real-life acquaintances must run the gauntlet together. It’s Some Guy, their immediate neighbors, their first partner’s mom, their friends from hobby Facebook groups (oh this poor guy and their hobbies; the elderly birdwatchers from Facebook and the young up-and-coming drag king community), their random teen kid niece, college friends, a dog who also watched the video, a couple consisting of a woman who is the guy’s Facebook friend and showed her husband the video, and the husband doesn’t even know Some Guy, so he’s in the labyrinth and absolutely furious about being forced to be involved, and they proceed to break up over the course of the puzzle.

It’s important that the narrative keeps trying to be a sexy dark horror isekai! but within this the comedic reality of Catherine, 52, the guy’s horse-riding instructor, being passionately involved in escape-room-style puzzle solving and grappling with minor goblins. They are in fact speedrunning the gauntlet.

The Goblin King finally has to say: all right, actually, I only really set all this up to fuck with one (1) guy at a time, thanks for your willingness to participate, but I think all 25 of you can consider the gauntlet fully run.

And the group would be quite hurt by that. The rules are the rules. We have a contract, actually. Let Catherine cook.

I got a laptop with Windows 11 for an IT course so I can get certified, and doing the first time device set-up for it made me want to commit unspeakable violence

Windows 11 should not exist, no one should use it for any reason, it puts ads in the file explorer and has made it so file searches are also web searches and this cannot be turned off except through registry editing. Whoever is responsible for those decisions should be killed, full stop.

Switch to linux, it's free and it's good.

A screenshot of a headline, reading: "How Disney Almost Killed 'Nimona': The Netflix animated movie suffered years of ups and downs and alleged studio interference."
A scene from Disney's Wish (2023), which will be played out in the following alternating images. King Magnifico says to Asha, "Well, you're young. You don't know anything, really."
Article Headline: "Shelving Batgirl Was the Right Decision, Says New DC Studios Head Peter Safran: ‘It Would Have Hurt DC’"
King Magnifico sends the Wishes away, telling Asha, "Whereas it is my responsibility to only grant the wishes I am sure are good for Rosas."
After Batgirl and Scoob! were dumped, a group of filmmakers with business at the studio started a text chain — a support group of sorts — to share their hopes and their anxieties, as well as encouragement and tips for navigating the studio. The one question all of them had: What was going on with their movies?
Asha asks, "So, most of these wishes will never be granted?"
Magnifico, without even looking back at her, responds, "Yet I still protect them like all the others."
"Yes I am afraid this is true," Cervone wrote in a post on Instagram Tuesday evening. "[Scoob: Holiday Haunt] is practically finished and turned out beautifully. I am beyond heartbroken."
Asha asks, "Can't you give them back instead?"
"It's heartbreaking to put so much time into a project and then have it not release," a second staffer said. "[Nimona] didn't look like anything else in the animated world. It's a big loss of effort and time."
Asha says, "The wishes you're not going to grant... you could just give them back. Then, I don't know, the people can try to pursue them themselves?" Magnifico looks at her in confusion and disdain.
Elsewhere, the [directors of Batgirl] appeared most let down by the fact that audiences were robbed of the opportunity to judge the movie for themselves. "We didn’t get the chance to show Batgirl to the world and let the audience judge for themselves,” added El Arbi. "Because the audience really is our ultimate boss and should be the deciders of if something is good or bad, or if something should be seen or not."
Asha continues, "You know, if they're dangerous, then they can be stopped, but if they're not..."
Deadline reports that the Dave Green-directed film [Coyote vs. Acme], which tested extremely well with audiences, won’t even be offered to other companies, even though Amazon was interested in acquiring it for its streaming service. The tax write-off is apparently more valuable to Warner Bros. than any potential third-party pick-up.
Magnifico interrupts Asha and begins angrily mixing a potion. He says, "You've completely missed the point. People come here because they know they can't make their own dreams come true. Their journey's too hard, it is too unfair."
Netflix tries to make itself more appealing to TV show producers by giving them bonuses and pay bumps the longer a series carries on. Harrington says that shows on Netflix are more expensive after season two and even more expensive after season three, with the premiums going up each season. “They have to give [a show] more money per series, and if they decide to recommission it, it becomes more expensive for them to make,” he explains. “Because of that, so many more shows are cancelled after two series because it costs them more.”
Magnifico magically pulls smoke from his potion, saying, "They give their wishes to me, willingly... and I make it so they forget their worries."
[Disney] could have let Blue Sky finish its last production. They could have allowed a very different kind of young heroine. They could have just dumped it to streaming and made money — which, considering they’d already bought the entire damn studio and the production, would essentially have been free money — which you would think is the actual purpose of a corporation. But, I suppose, they don’t have the ancillary rights to merch and straight-to-video sequels and a Nimona character in the parks, so fuck sharing and getting 94% of the benefit.
Asha, horrified, says, "You make it so they forget the most beautiful part of themselves."
Part of Duffield’s frustration, he says, was that Green did everything that was asked of him: He delivered [Coyote vs. Acme], which sources say cost $72 million, on budget. He hit the right test scores. He even moved away from his friends and family to London for 18 months to save the studio money on postproduction costs. All this, only to see his film get run off a cliff.
Asha takes a step closer to Magnifico, who looks up angrily. She says, "And they don't know what they're missing. But you do."
Writer-director Brian Duffield, who saw the completed film [Coyote vs. Acme], wrote that the feature “tested in the high 90s repeatedly” with audiences. “It also had interested buyers,” Duffield said. “The people working at Warner Bros are anti-art and I hope multiple anvils drop on their heads.”
Beginning to get upset, Asha says, "it's not fair. The people of Rosas are good. They deserve more than..."
"That is heartbreaking because we are not only losing our jobs, we’re losing our family, our workplace, we’re losing the closure of being able to send Nimona out into the world, where it could change kids' lives," one of the employees said. "I just want this movie to be seen by the world, because it needs to be seen by the world."
Magnifico, angrily, whips around and shouts, "I decide what everyone deserves!"
Disney has their Way, their Method , their Version of how things are meant to be, and everything they build must conform to them or be ground down and erased. It is all or nothing for them.
Shocked, Asha steps back.
Tweet from Scott Derrickson, reading: "I think it’s absolute bullshit that a studio can and does shelve the creative work of hundreds of people for a fucking tax break."
A shot of Magnifico looming over Asha, in a furious stance, while she backs up.
