friend appreciation post: bessie!
before i left boston, bessie insisted that i take her paper rand mcnally atlas map of america. just in case. i was feeling like i didn’t need ONE MORE THING in my car, but i took it to appease her. because, “you never know.”
today was the day bessie. i was trying to get to 40 west from santa fe and my morning mystery ride down cerillos road in search of breakfast lead me back to 25 south. i was worried i couldn’t get to 40 west easily from there and my phone was doing this thing where it had service, but it wouldn’t open any apps saying i wasn’t connected to the network. data connections work over cell phone networks. the phone and i were at an impasse. my phone is my gps, so i was stuck. i knew in albuquerque there was an exit for 40 west because i had seen it when i was down there the day before.
i pulled over on the road and actually used the atlas to figure out that i had to go through albuquerque again to get on 40 west and it would take me straight to flagstaff. i’m glad you insisted, dear bessie, or i would have had to —gasp—ask a human being for directions! haha, i’m kidding it was a lifesaver. also, it’s really fun to look at maps.
another appreciation came for bessie (there have been so so many on this trip) in the form of all the props i was getting for reading the book she got me / recommended to me at the spa (photo two). apparently it is THE book to read on a dream journey and everyone wanted to know about it. i’m only on chapter four, but i am learning a lot about how to get along, how to be compassionate and how to love. it actually helped me get through a fight i had with my mom recently.
i’m so grateful to have a friend like bessie in my life (there’s really no one else like her) who challenges me mentally and emotionally and who very kindly shows me the way, helping me along by ninja-ing info into my life at a time when i need to hear it.
sometimes i can’t hear it and bessie is patient. bessie is quiet and waits for me to be ready. and when i am ready, she is there. remember that time i was like, “i’m not a feminist. i believe in equality.”? yea i totally said that. luckily. bessie was just like, “mhmm. ok.” and she waited.
thank you, friend.
p.s. bessie probably hates that photo, but i love it. it reminds me of our dinners together over curry thai. i think it’s great—so it’s staying.
