A Lament for Poor Ody

You must be wondering where I am, Penelope.

Well let me tell you then. I’m staying for a while, here on Crete…

Ah. Sorry, but I lied. It’s not for a while, just an eternity.

And it’s not Crete. I’m on the moon. Literally.

But…why? Ogygia’s bad enough, yet it isn’t the worst of my day.

Why does this keep happening to me? Why is it always the case?

I can’t possibly figure it out though. Alas, I’m stuck in this place.

And besides all these rocks, there’s only the vast and empty space.

I gaze upon the sky, knowing that I’m isolated, and helpless.

And I look into the stars, heart filled with sorrow and loneliness.

It’s so cold here…and so dark. Such a fate grim and hapless.

No one will come to me. The cosmos knows only ruthlessness.

Earth glows faintly, but Ithaca I could not see.

And when I scream, only silence will greet me.

Is this my ending, then? A serene death far from the sea?

If so, then, I’ll send a message as far as I can reach.

I don’t know if you can hear me, my love,

I just want to tell you how much I love you, Penelope,

Even after all these days dire and tough,

Please remember me, and our promise by the olive tree.

Telemachus, I’m sorry, but I couldn’t make it back now,

And I’m sorry for not being able to watch you grow up.

But, my son, I know you’re ready. Ready to be the man of the house,

Ready to rule Ithaca as a king renowned. So be brave. Be strong.

I know, deep in the night, you might feel so lonely,

And I know, my time is short, soon my power will fully deplete.

Just keep in mind that I’m never lost, so you can always find me,

Whenever you look towards the moon, there will I always be.

Ah, night is growing, the day will sleep soon.

And the stars are shining, lighting the moon.

All is well, and in fair dreams we shall meet.

Artemis will be leading me, to a grand new odyssey.
