Here's a random question that's on my mind (don't ask why):

Is there a non binary name for a Mary Sue? Because, from experience, enbys give themselves some strange names.

What would it be?

I think one of the reasons why the term Mary Sue is so controversial is because nobody can agree on what constitutes a Mary Sue. The rules of every fictional universe are different, and what makes someone a Mary Sue in one work of fiction makes them perfectly normal and/or balanced in another. In theory, any level of power/influence that a character can have is acceptable as long as it works within the rules of whichever universe they’re in. Being powerful doesn’t make someone a Mary Sue, but being so powerful that nobody else can touch them can contribute to it, or having powers that nobody else has for no apparent reason. Being paired with a canon character doesn’t make someone a Mary Sue, as long as the relationship is well written and believable.

What I’m basically saying is that there will never be a universal definition of what constitutes a Mary Sue and that maybe y’all need to chill before throwing accusations out there? But maybe that’s just me.

Anyone else remember the metric fuckton of bad oc blogs on this site in the early 2010s? Like, I don’t know why so many people felt the need to mindlessly shit on people’s fanart and fanfiction, but I’m glad it’s over now and that those things don’t exist anymore
