Arthur Morgan, and the Rings of Paradise
Arthur was confused.
His mind reeled and his stomach ached like he’d been drowning his insides in putrid liquor. Doubled over, coughing, half laughing at his predicament he remembered lengthy drinking binges with Lenny or John or Javier. He wiped spittle from his chin as the daze began to be replaced by a painfully everpresent dull ache. The outlaw scratched unkempt hair from under his hat, looking this way and that, looking for his horse. Arthur was alone, too, on a familiar lookin grassy plane surrounded by sparse woodland islands. Birds’ egg blue skies embraced him. A gentle breeze whispered here and there.
He whistled in vain, sputtering out into a coughing fit. “Rachael! Oh, goddamn creature, run off again... What the hell did we drink last night..?” Arthur wiped his eyes and very suddenly, something caught his uncertain gaze.
Foggy disorientation vanished from his thoughts in an instant.
The sky above him arched upward into an elegant, impossible Ring growing increasingly thin and tiny against a dreamlike blue-black sky. Before and behind him stretched landscape and horizon as it reached into the air. He saw gorgeous oceans, crimson deserts, steaming jungles, glacially entombed mountains, hissing badlands: all in endless glory above him.
Arthur Morgan fell to his knees in silence, staring upward in disbelief. Thoughts of fireside roars by Dutch about paradise echoed in his mind, stories of rich eternity in an untamed and uninhabited frontier. Arthur Morgan felt tears prickle at his eyes. The weight of his rifle and repeating shotgun and revolvers, his aged knapsack, the weight of running from the law, the weight of fear that had grown in him as dreams of paradise slipped away into unreality: all seemed to evaporate into nothingness. Another life.
Then: a scream in the skies above him. Arthur threw himself to the ground and drew his ornate revolvers, turning upward just in time to watch bulbous, unnatural shapes wrought in organic purplish-black racing overhead. The flying machines were larger than any carriage or steamboat he’d ever seen, and they flew like horrendous angels!
More strange craft like howling demons passed overhead and away from him, thrumming with predatory energy. Suddenly the Outlaw felt very, very small.
When Arthur noticed he was not alone, and when Arthur saw the hulking giant metal man carrying a rifle unlike any he’d ever seen, a singular thought grew in his thoughts.
What the in the goddamn hell did I get myself into?
Interesting Post-War storylines:
*Human Supremacy*: Haunting Faces
In the aftermath of the Human-Covenant War, and the discovery— at least amongst the upper echelons— that humanity are the reclaimers of a vast interstellar empire; it seems almost inevitable that among any number of powerful forces in human society would move heaven and earth to assert human dominion over the Galaxy. A “dark” ONI and UNSC cabal of admiralty, generals, or extremely capable corporate interests harnessing military secrets to harvest Forerunner technologies: the milieu of interesting human villains is countless.
What about the genuine, understandable concerns of colonials and earthlings, unaware of the shared and successful relationships of UNSC and alien cooperation, fearing that any day now, Covenant ships will loom large over their worlds again? The Post-War era should be *rife*with explorations of trauma, conflict, and the complicated nature on *all* sides. What is it like to feel like an insurgent against your own government, your own *species*? How do people react against extraterrestrial resettlement, refugees? What’s the beautiful, what’s the ugly?
Not only do we get a painfully familiar enemy and complicated conflicts— but an engaging and active mirroring of those first true schisms in Forerunner society millennia ago, the first signs of interior societal stress that spelled their end at the hand of the Flood.
*Forerunner and Covenant Technology:* Tools of the Trade
The War is over. Across countless worlds lie the ruins and remnants of impossible, fearsome technologies: devastated Covenant armories, hastily excavated Forerunner complexes, and even experimental UNSC technologies dispatched to the field in desperate Hail Mary assaults against extinction. And it’s all just *waiting*. Scavengers, salvagers, zealots, historians, thrill-seekers; all anyone truly has to do to discover what’s been lost is some credits, a ship, and guns.
Imagine a Galaxy desperately holding its breath, knowing full well that any Insurrectionist, Covenant remnant, Banished mercenary, or corporate fixer could be wielding the next world-killer purely on looting the right battlefield, at the right time. Imagine the highest ranks of ONI and the UNSC, furious to form temporary alliances with unsavory and inhumane characters to do everything possible as means to neutralize the truly abominable. Give us stories of unlikely and unhappy alliances that truly mirror the history (and in all honesty, present) of international intelligence agencies. I understand the hatred of Forerunner-doomsday machines, but it just makes so much sense. And applying it to Covenant or even Human technology adds so much more interesting flavor. The Galaxy needs to not only feel full of threats— but *reasons to cooperate*.
*SPARTANS go Open Source*: Factory Floor Warriors
We’ve had it increasingly often, but I have always enjoyed the idea of SPARTAN-iterative programs as a cornerstone of the Post-War era. Humanity has been saved by extremely convenient weapons, controlled by an incredibly select few. What next?
*Everything*. Corporate programs to engineer augmentations and advanced exoskeletons, rampant tests and homegrown failures on backwards colony worlds. The idea isn’t to minimize or lesson the power of the SPARTANs we know, but to *diversify* the field, and showcase the dangers not just in new potential competitors, but inherit even in the program we grew up with.
TV Show - HALO
Since Voyager continues without me for now, and I don't feel like watching movies too much, I looked for some new material. Yesterday, I stumbled upon HALO!
I had started watching the first season some time ago since the second season was on its way. Now it's here and streaming on Paramount+ in Germany.
I've never played a HALO videogame, even though I find the world-building and lore incredibly interesting. Maybe it's because of this that I was so impressed with the first season, even though there were a few points I didn't like so much. But I really enjoyed the lore and world-building, although I have to admit that during the rewatch, I understood a lot more than during the first watch.
So, I was ready for the second season, started it, and was initially very annoyed. A desk jockey leading the Spartans was such a typical "That's lazy writing!" (Deadpool 2) move that really irritated me. Why can't Hollywood come up with something new? Unfortunately, that feeling only slowly faded away, and the weird dude, whose name I've already forgotten, got less and less screen time and even ended up fleeing, coward!
I think the new dynamic between the Spartans is great; they've stepped it up a notch. And in the last episode from this week, I believe, I particularly liked the admiral's speech. It showed me that they're on the right track, and right after that, there was plenty of action plus a surprise, which I don't want to spoil here. I really enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to the next episode!
I think it's good that I don't know much about HALO because then I have more freedom to enjoy what's being shown, I don't set the bar too high, and I don't have too big expectations! And luckily, the second season isn't released all at once but only one episode per week. I liked that with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, too, and it makes me feel a little nostalgic because there's something to look forward to, just like in the old days. The glorious time before streaming services, that was nice!
I particularly like, regarding both seasons, Pablo Schreiber (The dude really stepped up physically in the second season, it's quite intense!), Kate Kennedy, and Charlie Murphy. Although Kate Kennedy would be a perfect fit for Samus Aran, somehow I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall. But I don't really care; right now, with what's shown in the second season, I'm even more convinced. A big point, aside from the desk jockey, in season two that I don't like, is Cortana's design. Yes, she still has a relatively small role in the second season so far, but I really liked her design in the first season, and I also miss the dialogues with John, which were sometimes very humorous!
Since I like to fill the time between episodes, I've chosen another series that has been available on Prime for a few weeks now. But more on that in another post!
