I have been reading Medaka Box and I really loved it. The manga is better than people give it credit for because despite it deconstructs the classic shonen tropes and even makes fun of them, it doesn't mock friendship but rather shows how important it is because it is thanks to the connections that we can grow as people and give meaning to our lives.
Medaka Box's message is that even though its characters cannot escape their roles in the narrative, they can be more than just that, beyond the roles or archetypes they have as characters in a manga or in a story in general. Life means more than that because there is a real world with people and what makes it worth living are the connections we have because they are the ones that give such meaning to life.
