Moldmaking - Tumblr Posts
My first experiment with molding/casting from a 3D printed master.
Original (which broke when I pulled it out of the mold), mold, and a painted prototype. I’m going to make blanks of these available for purchase if anyone is interested in them.
Don’t mind me, just finishing some molds as part of my goals before summer ends.
Something to take into consideration while moldmaking without a pressure pot is choosing a good angle to direct bubbles away from the most detailed/important surface of the prototype. This is the first side I will pour and it will end up being the bottom of the mold. So hopefully there will be no bubbles on this side at least. You can always expect a few here and there, and while this is not supposed to be a flawless cast (it will be covered up by other people’s sculpting) it is good practise for me to try and minimize those.
And of course there is all the rest. Sealing the prototype, sealing the clay edges, making mold locks, filling in undercuts, planning separation lines and vents and a pour hole, etc etc etc. There are so many considerations. It is like putting a giant puzzle together and you also have to make the pieces.
