summary: [y/n] is back at it again, bringing her siblings entertainment... except this time, she has a little bit more planned.
([I/N] means Ikran's name)
You'll Have to Catch Me First
[Y/N] held the beautiful face of her ikran in her hands. Her fingers felt along the scales, the texture bringing a sense of familiarity and happiness, almost like it was a reminder that this creature — this beast — was so much more than she appeared.
“Okay, [I/N], you remember the drill,” she began, her voice hushed as the two pressed their foreheads together. [Y/N] could only snort as she felt a vibration rumble through her ikran’s body, a deep hum that reminded her, ‘Yes. We have been over it a solid eight-hundred times.’
“Alright, alright,” [Y/N] huffed in mock annoyance. “Whatever you do, though, please do not let me freefall to my death. That is extremely embarrassing.”
But, before [I/N] could respond in her signature exasperated manner, a rustle of leaves made both creatures look up. [Y/N] stared at the shaking leaves of the large tree that they were sitting underneath.
In preparation for what she had been initially planning for, [Y/N] rose from her squatting position, her stance wide and ready to run as soon as she caught a glimpse of her siblings’ familiar faces.
The leaves rustled some more, this time with voices attached to the movements.
“Who decided Lo’ak was in charge?” A familiar deep voice asked, his tone exhausted if not from walking, then from the constant talking from his younger siblings.
“Uh, I am not in charge. Tuk is!”
Tuk’s giggle emerged from behind the leafy entrance, happiness omitting from the soft yet rapid pads of her small feet.
“Even better.” [Y/N] could hear Kiri comment, already imagining the roll of her eyes.
With that, [Y/N]’s four siblings cleared the leaves from their path, allowing themselves entrance into the sunlit section of the forest that [Y/N] had claimed.
“Ah hah!” Tuk declared, raising her index finger in an accusation before she turned around to catch the eyes of her older siblings. After receiving the prideful glances that she initially searched for, Tuk turned back to look at [Y/N]. “We are here to… we are here to… to… Lo’ak what am I supposed to say?”
The older boy chuckled, leaning down to whisper in her ear.
“Oh! Yeah.” Tuk nodded, almost as if affirming her message before relaying it. “We are here to arrest you!”
[Y/N] gasped, her hand pressed to her chest in order to entertain the fantasies of her younger sister. “Arrest? Me?” Tuk nodded, her smile smug. “Oh, dear. Well, I am afraid, Officer Tuk…” she paused, taking a breath to lengthen the silly moment. “I am afraid that you’ll have to catch me first!”
With that, [Y/N] spun on her heel, smiling to herself as she noticed that [I/N] had already flown away. She began with silly, stumbling steps, almost as if she was trying to remember how her legs worked. Luckily enough, she was a quick learner.
It didn’t take long for her to begin lengthening her legs, quickening her steps and her pace. [Y/N] was fortunate enough to catch her siblings off-guard, allowing her extra time to run as Neteyam threw Tuk on his shoulders before they could start pursuing their sister.
Part of this scene, [Y/N] running with a smile stuck on her lips, was absolutely and utterly beautiful. The scenery was gorgeous, as it was all over Pandora, but there always seemed to be a new-found appreciation for it when all [Y/N] could feel was the dirt beneath her toes, the leaves brushing her arms, the breeze blowing back her hair, and the sunlight beaming down on her face. She loved every moment of it.
She laughed joyously as she ran, the sounds of her entertained siblings gracing her ears as they yelled out playful insults and comments as if they could slow her down with words. [Y/N] jumped over roots, ran through a stream, ducked under branches, and didn’t fall once (that’s a new record!)
Well, that is, until she reached the cliff. Of course, that had been her goal since the very beginning. Reach the cliff. As her feet left the softness of mulch and dirt, she began to track muddy footprints on the rough surface of the rocky edge. Once she felt the change in texture, the change in give, she began to calculate. How many steps until the end?
One.
She felt the presence of her siblings catch up to her, their huffs of breath and screams of excitement becoming louder by the second.
Two.
She swore she could see her parents, Neytiri and Jake, in the camp across the way. She did not miss the combined look of curiosity, concern, and possible anger start to make its way onto their faces as they watched her run closer and closer to the edge.
Three.
She wasn’t gonna make it. She needed to make her strides longer, legs stretch even farther than they had been before.
Four.
Oh, shit. What if she didn’t make it? Or worse, what if everything didn’t actually work out?
Five.
Well, it’s too late now. Here comes the moment of truth!
[Y/N] felt her legs launch her off of the rocky cliff into a free-fall. She pressed her eyelids together, her mouth closed, and fists tight. It felt like a billion years and like two seconds all at the same time, all until she felt her body jolt against the surface of [I/N].
Like a habitual response, [Y/N] grabbed her queue and made the bond, distributing and balancing her weight across her body as she stood up on her feet, stuck in a crouched position.
[Y/N] couldn’t help but let out a howl of joy. It worked! It actually worked! And she got to show her parents her capabilities — unfortunately, she was well aware that it would come with future punishment for being reckless, but at least she knew there would be a small amount of pride hidden beneath their stares.
The girl laughed madly, stuck in an adrenaline high of the moment as she soared up, turning right past the cliff where her sibling stood, stuck in awe.
“How ‘bout that,” she teased pridefully, a smile etched on her lips. But, of course, as siblings tend to do, the moment is ruined quicker than it started.
Tuk huffed, her arms crossed in front of her chest. “That’s cheating.”
Heyyy!!! Okay, so this is my first time writing + publishing on tumblr, and to say that I am a tad confused and nervous would be an understatement. It's not at all my best work, given it was written in forty-five minutes, but it was fun and I had to do something else with my life night rather than do homework or study for midterms.
I'm honestly not entirely sure how this whole thing works, but I would love to keep writing for the fun of it. I don't know how requests work (like at all), but I seriously appreciate them as inspiration to keep me writing.
But, anyway, all that is to say: thank you for reading!! I hope you stick around (and I hope I keep writing on here!!)
hi omg i love your oldest sister fics!!!! Maybe another where she is one of the most feared warriors in the clan ? and when they leave rhe forest she meets someone (romantic) at the new clan ? the sully family is probably not accustom to seeing her be romantic and in love.;)
summary: [y/n] sully is in love, and everyone is scared.
a/n: I LOVE THIS IDEA. LIKE SO VERY MUCH. thank you so much anon for this beautiful experience, it was so fun to write. i actually am really proud of this, given it's pretty long ( 4.6k words, oml !! ) and i put a good ( insane ) amount of effort in. i also kept using this as a way to take a break from studying, so thanks for keeping me from burning out anon! feedback, reblogs, and reqs are always appreciated !!

warnings: literally none, maybe some language, a bit of angst at first ( just sad — i made myself very unhappy ), emotionally hurt + comfort, a sickening amount of fluff, really long, [y/n] x oc but this oc is actually such a sweetie pie i love him, [y/n] being the cutest little patootie of all time
change is scary

every omaticayan knew of [y/n] sully. they knew she was a fierce warrior, a strong warrior. they knew she took after her mother, the archery gene running strong through her veins right next to her urge to protect.
they all knew that, being the oldest child of their olo’eyktan, she was expected to fill the position of the tsahik one day in the far future, and her training reflected just that. not only was she deeply connected with eywa thanks to the teachings of both her mother and grandmother, but she was intelligent when it came to war. she sat in at every single war meeting with her father, silently taking note of everything that was exchanged.
after seventeen long years of listening and learning, [y/n] was considered one of the strongest warriors in their clan. she was well respected, more respected than even some of the elder warriors.
part of her soul felt pride. pride in herself, in her abilities. but, another part of her soul felt empty. almost like she’d missed a third of her childhood because she’d been busy shaking the hands of generals from other clans.
but now… now all of that, all of that time wasted as she straightened her shoulders and stood tall in front of clan leaders, time wasted as she stared at raid maps, time wasted as she trained with the most skilled warriors of the omaticaya… it was all going down the drain.
“we must leave. it is unsafe here.”
she fought tears, told herself she was far too mature for them. she swallowed screams, told herself she needed to set an example for her siblings. the only time she broke was the night before they left, leaving her on her knees before the tree of souls, begging eywa, “why? why must you do this to me? just when i was this close?”
[y/n] was not sad. no, she was angry. but she had nobody to be angry at. it wasn’t like her parents were wrong for wanting to keep her family safe.
maybe if i’d killed that avatar when i had the chance, she cursed herself, remembering when her arrow’d been pointed directly at the heart of quaritch, only being interrupted by the other avatar that shot at her. thanks to the will of eywa, he was a terrible shot and she came out unscathed.
she held a stoic look upon her face during the ceremony in which her father passed along the title of olo’eyktan to tarsem. it wasn’t that she had anything against tarsem and his mate—in fact, she thought they were considerably good choices. but that was supposed to be her. that was supposed to be her ceremony.
by the time they had to leave, [y/n] had nothing left, no energy left to try and hold it down. so, instead she remained silent, because if she decided to say a farewell to even one person… she knew herself well enough to not trust the floodgates.
as they flew, her butt growing sorer and sorer by the second, she remained distant. the air was calming, the breeze allowing her a moment to breath.
she was so wrapped up in her own thoughts she didn’t notice her family exchange glances, all silently deciding to leave [y/n] to work through it herself. they knew her, and they knew she would not let them help. i’m fine, she would say, and she would keep saying it until they finally gave up.
it was only when they reached their new home in the metkayina clan that she began to show herself again, but even that was the tiniest peek.
as ronal circled the group of foreigners, her hands trailing over them as to check out what features they offered, [y/n] immediately felt on alert. her ears perked, eyes narrowing at the tsahik, a growl growing at the back of her throat.
when she held up lo’ak’s hand for the entire clan to see, as if shaming him for his lineage—a lineage that he was born into without a choice, [y/n] stepped forward, teeth bared. immediately, neteyam pulled her backwards, just as jake did with neytiri.
her action pulled ronal’s attention, their eyes locking. the tsahik circled her, watching as [y/n]’s tail swished, lip curled in disgust.
ronal did not miss as her eyes flared for even a split second as she stopped in front of the girl, grabbing [y/n]’s face with one hand. the air immediately got tenser, tonowari and jake sharing very similar expressions of concern, the latter grabbing his mate before she could make any dumb decisions.
[y/n]’s tail fell to a pause, her air stuck in her chest as she stared directly into the metkayina woman’s eyes.
“if you are seeking refuge, i suggest that you don’t threaten anyone.”
[y/n] bared her teeth at that, fangs making a show just for her. “if you are seeking to make enemies with the toruk makto, then why don’t you just say that?”
now, in this moment, most members of the metkayina clan were justifiably upset. speaking to their tsahik like that? well, of course they would be angry. but, in the crowd of metkayina stood one boy, his eyes unable to leave that girl. that girl who was full of anger, of spite, of bitterness for the world. she was captivating.
as the rest of the crowd gasped at the seventeen year old’s words, he couldn’t help but laugh, immediately covering his mouth as his friends sent him a look and an elbow in the ribs.
the only other person to smile at her words was, shockingly, ronal. the tsahik felt the smallest grin rise to her lips, taking her hand off of the girl’s face and taking a step back. as soon as she was back with tonowari, it was like the look of amusement had never been there.
once she’d stepped back, silence seemed to settle in the air. it was heavy, weighing on [y/n]’s shoulders just as much as the look her father sent her. behave, remember? he seemed to be telling her.
her mother’s look of pride made her feel a bit better, though.
as a way to regain the attention of the crowd, tonowari cleared his throat. “toruk makto is a great war leader. all na’vi people know his story.” he then locked eyes with jake. “but we metkayina are not at war.” [y/n]’s eyes followed tuk, watching as the small girl walked over to her father, allowing for the father to pick her up and hold her in his arms. “we cannot let you bring your war here.”
jake nodded in agreement. “i’m done with war, okay. i just.. want to keep my family safe.” at that, they seemed to pull closer together, neytiri grabbing the hands of her two eldest daughters.
“uturu has been asked,” the mother added, her eyes meeting those of tonowari.
the silence was deadly. [y/n] could feel pins of anxiety, her breath getting shallower. and what if they send us away? where else would we go? just keep trying and trying to find someone to take us?
after what seemed like forever, tonowari turned away from them and towards the people. “toruk makto and his family will stay with us.” immediately, relief flooded her body, her head dropping in appreciation. “treat them as your brothers and sisters. they do not know the sea, so they will be like babies taking their first breath.” at that, [y/n] felt her mother cringe beside her. and, as a wonderful way to finish their introduction to the metkayina people, he added, “teach them our ways so they not suffer the shame of being useless.”
she felt neteyam’s grab her tail at that, tugging it to keep her from saying anything stupid.
“okay,” jake sighed, relieved. he turned to his family. “what do we say?”
“thank you,” they all mumbled except for tuk whose tone was very genuine.
[y/n], however, remained silent. at a sharp look from her father, she swallowed. “thank you,” she added, exhaling a deep breath.
beside tonowari stood two kids, a boy and a girl. “my son ao’nung and my daughter tsireya will show your children what do,” he informed the family. [y/n] stifled a chuckle as the boy, ao’nung, tried to argue his way out of it. “it has been decided,” tonowari shut him down.
tsireya, however, looked more than happy to do it, and based on the way her baby brother was staring at the metkayina girl, lo’ak didn’t seem to mind either. “come, i will show you our village.”
if there was one thing that shocked [y/n] during her time in awa’atluI, it was that she horridly terrible. terrible at everything. from riding an ilu to being a quick swimmer. it was awful. and maybe the whole brink of the problem was the fact that she could barely hold her breath for a time, making it nearly impossible to learn to do anything else.
it’d been a few weeks of relearning the ways of life, and it felt as if she was making absolutely no progress. the simple things, such as food and even dancing, came easy to her. but learning to make food and dance was not going to make her a successful warrior, and even tonowari knew they needed to train her to fight with them based on the stories that her father told of her. ( he also recognized her the moment that ronal faced her off—how could tonowari forget the face of one of most mature eight year olds that he’d ever met way back in the day when he visited the omaticaya for a war meeting. )
but, for the love of eywa, [y/n] was useless. completely and utterly! and the fact of it made her sick to her stomach.
ao’nung was her first teacher, and he was a complete imbecile. tsireya was patient with her, but her optimism made me feel even guiltier by the day. eventually, one day out of the blue, the two children of ronal and tonowari brought forth a male.
this male was around [y/n]’s age. he was tall, muscular, and based on his tattoos, he was an announced warrior of the metkayina. tsireya introduced him as fali.
it turned out, based on further conversation between [y/n] and tsireya, that fali had grown up with the two kids. he was the son of respected warrior, a warrior that was considered ronal’s best friend. in a way, fali was like their big brother.
at that, [y/n] thought that… maybe they could be friends. maybe they had more in common!
she was wrong, and after a days of knowing him, she came to the conclusion that their older sibling roles happened to be the only thing in common.
while [y/n] was smart, responsible, respectful… fali was stupid, annoying, and careless. it was driving [y/n] up the wall! if he was the “older sibling,” why did he egg ao’nung on? if he was the “older sibling,” why did he dare the younger boys to go beyond the reef? if he was the “older sibling,” why was he so… reckless?
so, to say that [y/n] was exhausted with both him and the entirety of trying to rewire her brain, well… that would be a major understatement.
but, alas, she was still expected to learn. unfortunately for her, she took the role as the older sibling quite seriously, and she tried to set a good example out of herself!
now she treaded water in the middle of the reef, the sun beaming down on her face and shoulders. in front of her floated fali, the boy drifting stomach up with his hands rested behind his head.
[y/n] did not look amused, as unfortunate as fali found it. he was letting the sun practically burn his face off, and she wouldn’t even smile!
after an excruciating amount of time, fali let out a yelp of surprise when he felt her hand grab his tail, yanking him downwards. when he resurfaced, she had the faintest shadow of a grin. she nearly drowns me and she still can’t smile fully. what is wrong with her?
while [y/n] thought fali to be reckless and far too carefree, fali found her to be way too uptight. i mean, sure, old habits die hard after being raised as the future tsahik, but couldn’t she let loose once in a while?
“can we please start?” the girl asked, tone exasperated.
he rolled his eyes, a smile playing at his lips. “well, i apologize. i didn’t realize you were so eager to learn. i mean, you usually just complain.”
[y/n] sighed, sending him a look of annoyance. he does not shut up, does he? but, he wasn’t wrong… however, she didn’t let him know that her heart dropped once he decided to actually start teaching her for the day.
it was an unusually long lesson, but it was filled with the same issues as every other day. fali telling her what to do, [y/n] being unable to do it, [y/n] getting mad at herself, fali trying to help her fix it, [y/n] telling him that she’s fine, fali stepping back and watching her battle herself… it was always a pleasant time.
this time, however, things just seemed to be a little more on edge. she seemed to be a little more annoyed. at him, at herself. she was a balloon ready to burst, and fali was bracing himself for the moment that she did.
it was after the sixth time in which she failed to breath correctly that he knew it was going down. he watched her face flush, eyes narrowing as she continued to try and fix it.
“no, [y/n],” he offered, voice soft. she always made him feel guilty, guilty of ever getting annoyed. he knew that she was trying her best. “just… breathe from here. pretend as if there’s a flame within your belly, offering your lungs support and warmth.”
“i’m trying!” she snapped, eyes brimming with tears before she quickly turned away, eyes avoiding his eyes.
the two faded to silence, simply sitting on a rock in the middle of the reef, staring at the setting sun ahead of them. the horizon was gorgeous, a beautiful orange contrasting the blue of the sea.
they sat there, in silence, until just before eclipse.
as they neared curfew, [y/n] inhaled deeply, preparing herself to get up and leave. but, a gentle hand on her knee stopped her. she turned to fali.
“do you know what i think?” he began, voice gentle. “i think that you are more than capable to do this.”
[y/n] scoffed. “if that were true, i would be out there, not stuck with… with you!”
at that, he huffed a laugh, running his fangs over his bottom lip. “i’m going to ignore that comment and continue getting to my point,” he jokes, his eyes widening at the smallest flicker of a smile on her lips. “i believe that something, whether you realize it or not, is keeping you from being successful—my guess being that it’s subconscious—but i digress. i believe that you are scared, [y/n]. scared of doing it right, scared of becoming one of the metkayina because once you are one of our people, you feel like you are betraying your home.”
the girl beside him shook her head in disbelief. “you believe? or you know? because you sure said that—that soliloquy—as if you know me.” [y/n] stood up, taking a few steps backwards. “i have known you for seven days, fali. seven days! and suddenly you decide that you can analyze me?”
fali laughed at that. “seven days is enough for you to decide that you hate me!” he pointed out, a disbelieving smile playing on his lips.
“well, you wear everything on the outside. every bit of stupidity, recklessness, carelessness.” she grit her teeth. “you are an open book, and i am closed. that is the truth.”
“i wear what i want to wear,” fali argued, standing up to face her, the two getting closer by the second. they got closer by the insult thrown. “you think i am dumb, but i am not. i am smart enough to make it so that people like you—people who do not care to look past their own bubble—cannot see my vulnerabilities.”
[y/n] bared her teeth. “you think me ignorant? blind, even? i have seen more of the world than you, i have fought dream-walkers, watched as my baby siblings had death looming above their heads. you are clueless to what is beyond awa’atlu.” a growl built in the back of her throat, their faces extremely close together. “i build my—my ‘bubble,’ as you called it—because i know what is beyond your dimwitted understanding!”
the two were silent, the tension electric between them. behind them the sun was set beyond the horizon, eclipse having already passed. waves lapped at the rock, the incoming high tide making it so their feet were splashed with the salty water.
as they stared at each other, a sense of understanding seemed to bless both of them. fali’s eyes never left those of [y/n]... her ( beautiful ) narrowed eyes. and [y/n] didn’t miss the way that the moons reflected on fali’s aquamarine skin, his bioluminescent freckles splattering the sides of his face.
[y/n] could have sworn she felt herself lean in, towards him, until the familiar call of her mother brought her back to reality.
“[y/n]?” neytiri called from their marui.
the girl swallowed, stepping back quickly. she cleared her throat before yelling back, “coming!” and with one last look at fali, she dove into the waters.
the next few days were odd, to put it simply. suddenly, there was no aggravation towards each other, but it was much more tense in an… awkward way.
a part of [y/n] was filled with spite, and by the time they got to working again, she was doing better than she had been for weeks. she was actually making progress! and it was all to shove it in fali’s face.
unfortunately for her, fali was much more hesitant when it came to helping her. he refused to touch her stomach as to help her breathing, his movements stiff and scared, resembling that of a baby hexapede.
but, [y/n] didn’t need him…? the others found it extremely peculiar. one day, she’s out past curfew, and right after she suddenly fixed nearly all her mistakes. very odd indeed…
it did not take long for her first free dive. her breathing improved astoundingly, her swimming technique also getting better from watching tsireya when she showed kiri and tuk around the reef.
“do you see this shell?” fali held it up, the sunlight reflecting off of its shiny exterior.
she rolled her eyes. “yes, i see the shell.”
“that’s good.” he blinked, eyes shifting away from her’s with a sheepish grin. “uh, anyway,” he continued, clearing his throat. “i assume you understand the drill? i drop it, you find it.”
“yes, fali,” she sighed. “i am fully aware of how this works. now, i would rather get it done with soon so i don’t have to live in anxiety anymore.” [y/n] locked eyes with fali. “please just drop the shell.”
and he did. she swallowed as she watched it float down, the depths looking much more abyssal-like than they normally did.
“remember,” fali’s soft tone grabbed her attention, “there is nothing to fear. you are stronger than you know, and if you begin to doubt yourself… think of you returning with the shell and rubbing it in my face.” at that, [y/n]’s face flushed, embarrassed. he smiled at her expression. “yes, i know that’s the only reason you’ve suddenly been trying, but… if it works, it works.”
and for once, she smiled. actually smiled. and fali felt himself burst with pride. somehow, it felt better that it wasn’t one of his stupid jokes, or his silly slip-ups. no, he made her smile just by talking to her. by being fali.
stunned, fali only remembered that he was supposed to be helpful when she stared at him expectantly with those bright [e/c] eyes of her’s. he lifted his hands, miming lungs filling with air as he reminded, “deep breath. this is all yours. nothing to fear, only to look forward to.”
with that, the girl dove in.
underneath the surface, she felt at peace. for the first time ever, [y/n] wasn’t freaking out while submerged in the salty water. instead, her jaw seemed to gape in awe at the scenery around her.
the deeper she went, the more starstruck that she was. there were layers to this reef that she hadn’t even been aware of. layers that she’d only heard from tales of her siblings, not truly understanding how magical they actually were.
as she kicked her feet towards the ocean floor, she heard fali’s voice in her head. “the way of water has no beginning and end.” she caught sight of the shell. “the sea is around you and in you. the sea is your home, before your birth and after your death.” she stifled a cry of joy as a school of fish swam around her, tickling her sides with their soft touches. “our hearts beat in the womb of the world. our breath burns in the shadows of the deep.” she was nearly there, her hand outstretched to grab the small artifact. “the sea gives and the sea takes.” she got it! oh, eywa, she got it! it was in her hand! oh, how proud fali will be! “water connects all things.” she began to swim up, a smile stuck on her face. “life to death,” she resurfaced, “darkness to light.”
“fali!” she cried, spinning around in a circle to catch the eyes of the boy. “fali, look!” she held it up, her expression beaming with pride.
and fali couldn’t help it either, his own smile taking over his features. “[y/n]!” he exclaimed, jumping off of the rock and swimming to her. “you did it! oh, eywa, you actually did it!” he stared at the shell as they tread water. “oh, how proud i am!”
her silence caused him to turn, staring her in the eyes. “[y/n]?”
she swallowed, her eyes locked on the shell in her hands. “fali,” she began, voice quiet. “i have a wallowing fear that you were right.”
at those words, fali gaped silently. instead of answering right away, he began to tug her towards the rock, allowing for them to get out of the water so her could properly comfort her.
once she was settled on the rock, she carefully placed the shell down, pulling her knees close to her chest. she felt like a child again, helpless against her emotions. “i was scared. not of the ocean, not of swimming, not of drowning.” she looked up, locking eyes with fali. “i was scared of abandoning my people.”
a tear dropped from her eye, and fali immediately had her hands resting on [y/n]’s biceps. “hey,” he called softly, forcing her to look him in the eyes again. “you are not abandoning them. you are… learning. you are learning how to adapt, how to survive. in fact, i think that is more in touch with your culture and ancestors! you are just like them, trying to adapt and survive in a world that is trying to kill you.” she smiled a little at that. maybe he wasn’t so stupid. “you are not weak for fearing change… you are normal. it is okay to be normal every once in a while, as much as you enjoy being the big sister that is oh-so mature and oh-so strong.” his finger lifted her chin up, a soft smile on his lips. “because people who love you do not mind how mature, or strong, or stupid, or careless, or responsible, or up-tight you are. because you, [y/n], are what you are.”
once he was finished, he noticed that [y/n]’s tears were dried, a smile on her face. a look in her eyes had him floored… oh, she was so beautiful, wasn’t she?
luckily for fali, she seemed to think the same of him, raising her arm, grabbing the back of his head, and bringing his smiling lips against her’s.
the sully family knew and loved [y/n]. of course they did! she was their’s, afterall. but, they also knew that she was never this easy-going or even this happy.
both jake and neytiri knew they’d seared little moments of trauma into the brain of their eldest daughter, and they hated knowing that, but parenting is never easy. especially when she was expected to become the tsahik way back when.
but, ever since a few weeks ago, ever since she finally overcame her own issues regarding leaving the omaticaya, ever since she finally found someone that she loved as much as she loved her family ( and he seemed to love her even more ), she was a new person. a better person. a person who actually seemed to enjoy life.
neteyam and lo’ak were the first to become skeptical. ever since her successful free-dive, she’d been so.. giddy. it was not their big sister.
kiri started to catch on when she noticed [y/n] disappearing four hours at a time, and when she came back, she was ten times happier.
neytiri and jake were so wrapped up in the fact that their eldest was finally living a happy life, they didn’t once question, “hm, why could that be?”
it was only when [y/n] returned home a little late one night after the rest of the family, minus tuk since she was still quite young, had a busy day full of duties. she blamed it on finishing an errand with her new best friend, fali, but neytiri scanned her daughter’s body for any sign of injury. neytiri was just that type of mama bear!
“[y/n],” she began, eyes narrowed at her neck. “did you get bitten today? are the bugs bad on that side of the island?”
[y/n]’s face flushed almost immediately. she swallowed, grabbing her hair to cover her neck. “yeah—” she attempted, before tuk interrupted. [y/n] immediately cursed herself, remembering the stupid excuse that fali and her’d made up to cover-up their “hang-out” when tuk had walked in unexpectedly.
“uh, no, mom,” the youngest said matter-of-factly. “she was playing shark with fali. obviously.”
immediately, the sully family burst into confusion.
“[y/n]!” neytiri scolded, although her eldest daughter didn’t miss the amused smile that played on her lips.
kiri burst into laughter. “that’s why you’ve been so happy? because a guy? who even are you?” she teased.
lo’ak was absolutely losing his mind, face flushed from the laughter he was overcome by at the reality of it all. his big sister, little-miss-uptight, getting her first kiss before him and neteyam? unbelievable!
neteyam was absolutely shocked, face frozen in disbelief. “you? fali?”
jake, of course, was on immediate protective dad mode. “fali? the son of vi’ieo and fpai?” he questioned, eyes squinted at [y/n].
all [y/n] could do was sit there, a hand covering her mouth. of all people, tuk had to expose her. it’s always the ones you least expect.
but, despite the surprise of it all, the sully family was extremely happy. [y/n], the one who entered the metkayina by trying to one-up the tsahik and also deal with her own absolute soul-crushing homesickness, was making a life here in awa’atlu. and they couldn’t be more proud.
someone was suckered into a part ii
I just need everyone’s reaction to the reader graduating/going to college now in the modern day au

graduating ( sully!daughter modern headcanons )

jake
oh my goodness he is so proud of his girl
like obviously he knew she would graduate and leave, but still... it's such a big accomplishment that she made it through thirteen years of the american public school system
not only that, but she literally made it into one of her top five schools
even though it's far away
when she first got the acceptance letter, neytiri and him looked at each other and were just like "oh no," only because their baby girl would be so far away from them
when they went to visit the campus, they knew there was no way they could convince her to stay closer
didn't cry on the graduation day because he knew he had to stay positive for [y/n] since it was a big accomplishment ( plus neytiri was emotional enough for the both of them )
the day she moved out though... yikes !!
he was a wreck
suddenly he had this whole montage of the moment he first held her, dancing around the kitchen with her when she was a toddler, taking her on her first rollercoaster, her fifth grade graduation, taking pictures with her at her eighth grade dance, all of it crashed down in him at once
dropping her off hurt
so much
but nothing could diminish how proud her was that he was [y/n]'s father
neytiri
oh my goodness gracious
you know i'm about to rant about how emotional and stressful this mama bear was
she was so confusing because, while she dreaded the moment her daughter would leave them, she also wanted everything to be perfect
she wanted [y/n] to have the best senior night for sports / as the lacrosse team manager, the best senior prom, the best lady birthday while living with them, the best senior year
it was what her daughter deserved
the graduation party was amazing, but behind the scenes it was extremely stressful
lo'ak thinks he's traumatized from the entire week leading up to it
but it still ended up perfect with appearances from family members from across the country
uncle tsu'tey even showed up !!
neytiri put so much work in because she wanted the best for [y/n]
but after that graduation, it was the final moments of her enjoying the presence of her eldest child
the summer was interesting because, while [y/n] wanted to spend the last moments with her friends, with fali...
neytiri wanted [y/n] to herself
but she knew she couldn't do that
so she cherished the moments that she did have !!
they had some really epic board game nights over the summer
it was really dangerous and competitive though
but, for some weird reason, by the time they reached the date in which [y/n] moved out
neytiri was ready to let her go
she was sad, sure, but she was also so extremely excited for her daughter to adventure a world beyond her own, so excited for her daughter to make her name known
she can't wait to see what her daughter does in the world
neteyam
part of him doesn't really... realize that she's gonna leave
like he knows, but he doesn't know
for the majority of the year, he just treats it like the year before
there's nothing to make it weird or a big deal, it's just another normal year
it's only the end, as they near graduation, that he starts to panic
over the course of the last few years, he started making a box of memories being like, "oh, i'll give these to her when she graduates. that's going to be in like, a million years!" and alas...
as they get closer and closer to the moment in which he has to give her the box, he gets sad staring at it
sometimes he'll just sit there and look through, at one point thinking, "maybe i should just keep it for myself..."
but, one night at a pre-season lacrosse practice, he sees [y/n] sprinting towards him and fali
it's when she screams that she made it into her dream school that he knows he has to give it to her
( he'll never forget that night )
graduation is sad, but it's more happy than it tearworthy
they have the entire summer ahead of them, anyway! why ruin it now!
over the summer, they spend a good amount of time together, continuing to take their therapy drives as they scream music with the windows down
all neteyam can think is, "i'll miss this."
and all [y/n] can think is, "i'll miss him."
move out day is super rough
originally, neteyam was gonna fight tears and hold them in... but when he saw his big sister's sad eyes... the water works were heavy that day
nevertheless, it all just makes for an amazing time when she visits
kiri
aw man, this one is gonna be super bittersweet
they're so close, especially being the two oldest girls - they especially bonded in their childhood because they had to deal with neteyam together, and then eventually lo'ak
tuk came later, of course, but that was a good bit into their childhood
but, either way, she grew up looking up to her big sister
she wanted to be just like her
and eventually, when neteyam and kiri finally reached freshman year, they finally were able to get past the "annoying sibling" stage and just be best friends
sure, they hung out with different groups of people, but they were just happy with each other
always
and that's the only part that actually mattered to either of them
kiri isn't big on being emotional
but every time, over the past year, that kiri thought of her big sister leaving
she would get extremely sad
she refused to listen to any sort of bittersweet song with her sister ( ex. rivers and roads, landslide, vienna, etc. )
she keeps trying to be excited for [y/n] but she just keeps getting sad
kiri was eerily silent on the day of graduation, she honestly only really talked to tuk the whole day
when her big sister confronted her that night, kiri burst into tears in [y/n]'s arms and just spewed everything out
and that was when [y/n] promised, despite how far they were, despite her not being at home anymore
she would always pick up the phone when kiri called and she would not hesitate to book a flight home if kiri needed it
she was here for her baby siblings, even when she was gone
and that made kiri feel the tiniest bit better
although she was still a complete sobbing mess on move-out day, but that was more bittersweet than it was sad
lo'ak
lo'ak didn't know he was so attached to his big sister until she started applying to colleges
he began to keep tabs, noting exactly where she wanted to go, her chances of going to far away school, all that stuff
of course he wanted her to go to her dream school, but he also panicked
what if she was in danger one day? what if she was dying and she had two hours left to live and they missed the time slot because of airport traffic?
his sister assured that would never happen, but lo'ak still had an entire plan just in case it did
it was an extremely odd thing to have his sister leave after being in high school with her for only one year
it was gonna feel particularly emptier next year when she wasn't teasing him every time he hung out with tsireya at school
it was gonna be extremely sad when he didn't get anymore doordash or uber eats
but the graduation dinner she picked made it worth it, he supposes
she chose some really good food
he was sad, but he was just as excited for his time to leave so he couldn't blame her
he was more worried about just not seeing her
she's always been a constant in his life, so it's really weird when she suddenly... stops
they still keep their snapchat streak even after she leaves
tuk
ahh this poor baby
she's like a little bit clueless about it all ?? she hears her family talking about her big sister leaving, and she's like, "oh, that's gonna take forever to get here."
time just moves a little faster than anyone expected
she's more excited and happy than dad just because her sister seems so happy about it all
tuk doesn't really understand what it means
she doesn't quite get that [y/n] is actually leaving them
so, while graduation is fun and exciting, move out day is a wake up call for this baby sister
absolutely losing her mind as she hugs her sister goodbye
tears and snot all over
including on [y/n]'s shoulder after she picked her up and hugged her
will steal one of her siblings' phones and text or call her sister like all the time

welcome, brother

it was a time for stories after a season apart.
[y/n] watched in complete awe from where she waded above fali and his spirit brother. the scene was bustling with joy, with beauty. nearly every metkayina had a spirit sister or spirit brother of their own, their na’vi hands moving with grace through the thick waters to communicate with the gorgeous tulkuns. the sounds of the creatures reverberated through the water, a beautiful song ringing in [y/n]’s ears.
deaths.
some looked somber. [y/n]’s eyes caught sight of a na’vi that rested his forehead against the side of his spirit brother, a low hum vibrating through the duo. as if, even in the darkest times, there was still comfort in the relationship that they held between them.
births.
some were exuberant. a smile burst onto her lips at the image of an infant taking her first sights at her mother’s spirit sister, bobbing up and down in the water as she took deep breaths of the surface’s oxygen.
old friends.
her eyes traveled to where tsireya swam with her spirit sister, choking back a laugh at the backflip she did when retelling a very exciting story.
new loves.
but, of course, even when there was so much to watch, [y/n]’s sight would always return to the na’vi that floated beneath her.
fali spoke to his spirit brother, epayno, with an exhilarated smile that did not leave his face once. oh, how his childlike wonder made [y/n] melt.
what she did not expect, however, was when he suddenly looked upwards and caught her eyes. his arm raised, gesturing to her to swim down to him. he must have seen the way that her eyes widened for a blip of bubbles left his mouth.
“please, you must meet my spirit brother,” he told her, once again beckoning her to come to them.
she gave him a look before shakily signing, “i do not want to embarrass myself in front of your brother.” she winced as a laugh-like sound echoed from epayno’s body.
fali only sent the tulkun a look before turning back to her. “he wants to meet you. i promise, he will love you. i cannot say that same vice versa.” he smiled at epayno’s offended noise. “i only tease.”
with a nervous shake of her hands, [y/n] pointed her face downward. she began to kick her feet, arms wading their way through the water as she swam towards epayno and fali. once she finally reached the side of her love, a blush errupted onto her face as he grabbed her hand.
with his free hand, he signed, “i introduce you to epayno, and epayno meet ma [y/n]. my yawne.” and there she went again—melting at his mere words!
the creature rumbled, although he sounded very amused. after he was clearly finished speaking, fali turned to [y/n] and translated for her. “he says that you’re very beautiful. and that we look happy together. that is all.”
another wave of sound, this time with an undertone of disagreement.
“yes, that is all he said. nothing more than that!” he side eyed epayno. “because he would never dare say anything inappropriate or violating at all.”
[y/n] suppressed a laugh, although it was difficult. “something tells me that he is more than willing to expose and embarrass you.” she turned to epayno, a smile on her face. “i must learn to understand you soon. i must learn of all embarrassing fali moments!”
a click-like sound vibrated through her ears, although she understood it as more of a chuckle. she sent a teasing wink towards the tulkun at that.
“i told you! of course he would like you.” fali rolled his eyes. “and of course you would make it the bane of my existence.”
“what else would i do but make your life more difficult?”
he smiled, biting his bottom lip to fight back a grin. “maybe give me a kiss?”
she swam closer, grabbing his wrist to pull him onto the flipper that epayno was offering. once they were seated, hands running over the textured skin of the tulkun, he swam upwards and lifted them above the surface.
she grabbed his neck, pulling him into her. “i suppose that can be arranged.”
never did [y/n] expect the night to hold even more pleasantries than the day they just had.
music vibrated through the ground, drums and a melodious tune flowing freely in the veins of every na’vi that danced to the rhythm. a smile overtook [y/n]’s face, her eyes squinted because of the lower half of her face scrunching up into a joyous expression. her jaw was dropped open as she inhaled and exhaled, deeply taking in oxygen to try and regain composure within her lungs as her body moved with each beat of the drum.
beside her danced fali. his face was lit with joy, eyes stuck on [y/n]’s beautiful figure that swayed to and fro. paint swirled over her body, each color highlighting a different one of her features.
the na’vi danced on the beach, waves crashing onto their ankles as they swerved gracefully. their toes sunk into the wet sand, the salty water constantly returning to wash them off.
in the distance, the tulkun sang with the music, their own dance moves causing young children to gasp in astonishment.
“oh, this is wonderful!” [y/n] cried, feet stomping as the shells that were tied around her feet shook against the impact. “almost as good as parties back home.”
“almost?” fali raised his eyebrow muscles at that, his hand grabbing her as he pulled her into a twirl.
she only smirked. “well, i mean, there could be more drinks. less children. you know, that kind of stuff.”
“oh, just wait until the sun goes down!” he teased, hands wrapping around the middle part of her waist to lift her in the air.
she screamed a laugh, hands going straight to his forearms as if she was in imminent danger. “put me down,” [y/n] cried joyfully, tears pricking her eyes due to her uncontrollable laughter.
for once in their time together, the other na’vi paid no attention to the couple. their loud exclamations of happiness were drowned out by the combination of wind, water, dancing, and music. finally, after months of adapting to the metkayina ways, [y/n] and fali were able to dance the night away. together. and not one na’vi bat an eye.
hours passed, but they didn’t stop. soon, they were dancing into the next morning. sure, their feet were sore, their throats hurt, their heads were clouded by alcohol, but they did not care. they could not care.
around them flashed other young na’vi who still raged the dance floor. children were fast asleep back in their maruis, young parents having the burden to care for them, and the older warriors were far too aged to continue dancing for as long as fali, [y/n], and the others had.
occasionally, [y/n] would catch a glimpse of her siblings, although once they spilled into the next morning, kiri and tuk seemed to have disappeared. soon enough, neteyam followed after them, lo’ak eventually being forced to leave tsireya when neytiri ordered him to go home.
the sully parents sat to the side with toniwari, ronal, and both of fali’s parents. they were chatting up a storm, the omaticayans learning everything they could. neytiri was utterly infatuated with the beauty of this cultural aspect. she couldn’t help but try and learn from it.
jake was all too amused with the young adults that stumbled in front of them, their movements drunk and sloppy after a night full of dancing, singing, and drinking.
the amusement faltered the slightest bit when he caught sights of his daughter tripping over her own feet, fali attempting to keep her upright although it was doing more harm than help because he, too, had quite a bit to drink.
jake bit back a laugh when neytiri grabbed his arm, her free hand going to cover her mouth in astonishment. “oh, dear.”
neytiri slammed her forehead into her mate’s bicep when her daughter fell straight into the sand. “oh my eywa.”
the parents of fali were losing their minds as they watched their son attempt to help his love up onto her feet, unfortunately causing him to fall into his knees beside her.
simply put? the adults were howling with laughter.
it took quite a bit of time, but eventually the pair was back on their feet, continuing to try and make progress so they could leave the area that was determined as the “dance floor.” they didn’t even notice their parents.
instead, they were too wrapped up with every other bright flashing color that surrounded them.
while [y/n] was quick to make the smallest, most straight-forward comments to every na’vi that they passed, fali could not get enough of the sully girl. he kept grabbing her hands, pressing kisses against her temples and trying to tempt her to dance with him again. she was far too busy complimenting some metkayina on her jewelry to even fall for it.
and yet, somehow, even when shitfaced and quite out of it, they still managed to be an adorable and compatible couple, something that all the passerbyers idealized, even if some of them judged fali for even going for an outsider.
outsider or not, she was made for him, and he was made for her. and it was beautiful.
hi you absolutely do not need to do this but I thought of it last night. (Almost woke up the entire house) can you do a lo'ak x twin sister reader were lo'ak and reader are just walking along the beach holding pinkes maybe just a way they bond (while netayam is spying on them 😑), and they just kick the water from time to time, then reader makes the so called "great discussion" to flick a bit of water at lo'ak with her tail then lo'ak splashed her back and it just ended up a whole spash war then netayam gets in on it, and there just splashing each other, throwing wet sand at there faces, hissing, I find it hilarious when they hiss at each other and there like "come at me bro try me come on-" (its how me and MY siblings bond) then jake and neytiry have to drag them home while there still hissing at each other then netayam like basically throw himself at reader and then jake and neytiry come back like 2 minutes later and see reader has pined netayam on the floor and she's all like "hehe haha funny funny" until they actually get in trouble for it...... sorry this is really specific I just like it, but yeah. Have a absolutely great day/night
summary: [y/n], lo’ak, and neteyam are caught by their parents in the middle of a very important water fight.
a/n: hope you enjoy !! it’s kind of short and sweet , but full of sibling bonding + fighting , a recipe for disaster. thanks for the request. reblogs + feedback are always appreciated !!

water fight

lo’ak’s pinky was warm against her own. the two walked alongside the water, the consistent crash of salty cold brushing overtop their feet and igniting a chill across [y/n]’s arms. their arms rocked back and forth as they walked, talking and walking without much goal in mind. merely just to catch up.
they liked to do this quite a bit. a session of gossip ( mainly from [y/n] ) and drama to refresh their brains as they walked together. like twin bonding!
“and you would not believe what she said!” [y/n] said, her voice hushing to build up the suspense.
lo’ak shook his head, playing along with her energy. “don’t tell me—”
“yes!” her voice rose, shaking her head with amusement. “she said it. like, who in their right mind?”
it was stupid stuff, nothing worthy of true attention. but, it was fun, and that’s all they needed. the words would relay between the two, but none of it had true weight, and oftentime lo’ak forgot everything they discussed the moment that they returned home. he just loved to entertain his sister.
after a month of living among the metkayina people, they had even more gossip to exchange, some of which included some prodding questions.
“anyway, enough about me,” [y/n] trailed, biting her bottom lip to keep a smile off of her face. “what about you?”
lo’ak scrunched his eyebrows. “what about me?” she never asked about his gossip. she knew he was useless when it came to that stuff!
she groaned dramatically, rolling her eyes so far back that her pupils seemed to have been swallowed by the back of her head for a second. “i mean, what about you and tsireya?”
[y/n] let out a loud laugh at the face he pulled, a deep indigo crawling up his neck. “nothing,” he demanded, voice far too strong for it so be convincing.
“you are a terrible liar.” with that, [y/n] felt the cold water wash over, and as an immediate reaction, she decided to lift her tail upward in a swift motion. with the action came a good bit of water that splashed right onto her brother.
she stopped immediately, hands cupping over her mouth as to contain her laughter. amusement and concern for her life flooded her eyes as she flickered between watching lo’ak’s face and watching his own tail.
[y/n] shrieked as she received the same treatment she gave him, her own arm getting soaked in return. “lo’ak!” she cried, voice whiny as she choked out laughter.
just as she was about to push him over into the wet sand, a movement flickered in her peripheral vision. lo’ak seemed to notice it too, because he immediately fell to a pause, eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
the pair of twins narrowed their eyes, turning slowly. a smile broaden on [y/n]’s face when she saw neteyam frozen in front of them.
he blinked, standing and staring like an idiot. awkwardly, he lifted his arm and waved. “uh, hi!”
“were you spying, big brother?” [y/n] inquired, taking a step forward as she teased him. her tail swished to and fro, watching the way neteyam’s facial expressions changed.
“uh,” he trailed, clearing his throat. “no! of course not.” neteyam knew he was a goner the moment the set of twins exchanged a mischievous look.
before any of them knew it, the trio ended up tussling in the sand. tails and ears were tugged, playful punches were thrown ( softly… well, soft enough ), water was splashed, and all three of them were absolutely demolished by the rising tide.
they wrestled right next to the water, the waves soaking and re-soaking them in a very consistent manner. it seemed like every few seconds they were getting water boarded! but, of course, the geniuses decided it was too much work to move locations.
the fight escalated the moment lo’ak released a fistful of wet sand directly into his sister’s face.
“asshole!” she screeched, jumping on top of him. the tide was rising second by second, and she grinned as the wave flooded directly over his face. “that’s karma.” lo’ak hissed at his sister in response.
unfortunately, her glory was short-lived as neteyam came from behind and grabbed her. she was, once again, screaming for her life as he threw her into the surf.
once she resurfaced, she sputtered, wiping salty water from her eyes. “i’m going to murder you!”
before she could pounce on her eldest brother, she felt a larger pair of hands grab her shoulders, pulling her back into a warm embrace. “[y/n]!” he scolded from above.
immediately, she dropped her head sheepishly. “hey, dad.”
“all three of you realize that you’re in trouble, right?” their silence affirmed his question. he nodded, rolling his eyes.
“why must you make every day difficult?” neytiri held her sons’ biceps firmly, going back and forth from looking at each of them with a disappointed look.
after a beat, lo’ak offered, “well, at least we weren’t fighting any metkayina this time?”
[y/n] fought the smile that attempted to emerge onto her face, feeling the annoyed energy of her father that stood directly behind her. when lo’ak looked back down at his feet, she knew jake had sent a very disapproving look.
neteyam nearly laughed, but quickly covered it up with a cough.
a few seconds later, after a moment of trying to think it through on how to approach the issue, jake decided, “it’s time to go back. it’s nearly eclipse, and you would have known that if you weren’t fighting each other.”
[y/n] nodded slowly, eyes wide. “right,” she trailed.
the sully father tugged on her ear. “attitude,” he warned, to which she bit her bottom lip to hold back laughter. it became even more difficult when she caught the eyes of her brothers.
the walk home was awkwardly silent, the few times that [y/n] attempted to speak to either of her brothers being immediately shut down by the parents.
“this wouldn’t have happened if you hadn’t thrown sand at my face—”
“quiet, [y/n].”
“yes, sir.”
or the occasional “accidental” step on her tail.
the third time that she felt the pressure, she turned to her brother with her teeth bared. “neteyam i swear to eywa—”
“[y/n]!” neytiri hissed, grabbing her by the ear to which [y/n]’s eyes watered and she clawed her mothers wrist.
once they finally reached the marui, the parents had to, unfortunately, speak to tonowari and ronal. as a result, they told kiri that she was in charge. of course, the eldest girl of the family only nodded with a roll of her eyes. there was no way she would get in the way of their fights!
it’d been two minutes of jake and neytiri’s absence, and once they returned, they both groaned at the sight of [y/n] sitting on top of lo’ak’s back, her fingers pulling at his hair. neteyam’s ankles were stuck in lo’ak’s grip as he attempted to crawl away.
the moment they re-entered the marui, the children all went completely silent, staring at their parents.
the first thing to break the silence was [y/n]’s laughter. “whoops!”
im insanely in love with your older! Sister mini series!
Hmm I have a request, could you perhaps do one where you remember the scene where kiri unfortunately has a seizure underwater?
Instead of it being kiri could you switch it so instead we’re the one who has a severe seizure?? maybe a little different? Not too similar to how kiri’s whole situation went.
And the whole family especially our younger siblings go into a panic bc this has NEVER happened before.
It’s alright if you don’t want to do this one 🤍 was trying to come up with an idea so the mini series could stay alive for a bit longer! Lol
summary: [y/n] is normally the one taking care of her younger siblings—how are they supposed to care for their big sister while she’s hurting?
a/n: ahh !! thank you for this request. it’s been sitting in my drafts for a while because i was writing other requests , but i’m finally here !! i kind of changed the plot because kiri has a reason for her seizures ( “epilepsy” as norm might say , or as educated people might say , she’s connected to eywa ) so i decided to go with more of a connection to ancestors sort of route so that way they’re still super worried and she’s super in danger , but at least it’s something unique to her character !! hopefully you all enjoy. feedback + reblogs are always appreciated !!

warnings: mentions of immense pain , passing out , almost drowning , death , a very familiar death scene of a beloved na’vi from the first movie
not invincible

it should have been a normal day. it truly should have! but, alas, the sully family would forever keep it from being anywhere near “normal.” especially in their new home.
the group of siblings had been overwhelmed with honor when tsireya offered to show them the metkayina spirit tree settled beneath the waters of the cove of the ancestors.
as soon as [y/n] broke through the surface, immersing herself in a completely different world than she ever grew up around, she could feel the change in atmosphere. there was something different, something deeper that exuded itself through the cove. at the feeling, she could not fight the natural smile. it reminded her of her home, of the omaticaya tree of voices. oh, how she missed it.
the underwater bioluminescence highlighted features upon each of her companions, the beautiful splatter of glowing freckles littering each of their cheeks. [y/n] sent a cheeky grin towards her youngest sister, excitement omitting from every one of her movements.
the further they swam, the more in awe that [y/n] seemed to be. it was absolutely gorgeous. the scenery was jaw-dropping,
“come,” tsireya signaled, gently grabbing her own queue as they neared the tree. the four sully siblings that joined her on the journey to the spirit tree, neteyam, kiri, tuk, and [y/n], all followed suit.
the closer [y/n] swam to the tree, the louder her heartbeat got. she couldn’t help but stare in complete awe, the purple light omitting onto her face. she smiled, grabbing her hair, and she connected it to the underwater tree.
immediately, warmth flooded through her body. her smile broadened, and her fingertips tingled. at the comforting sensation, she felt herself slip from reality, allowing her eyes to close as she shifted into another world.
when she opened her eyes again, [y/n] was met with a familiar sight of home. she let out a laugh of joy, spin around as she took in the sight. she’d missed the forest, but as the eldest child, as the role model, she felt as if that longing feeling of being homesick had been pushed down. it was a common role that [y/n] had to take as the eldest. push down her feelings and prioritize that of her baby siblings.
[y/n] took a step forward, feet sinking into the wet mud. she paused, wiggling her toes, a moment of nostalgia playing back. once she looked back up, she felt smaller as she was met with the comforting eyes of her father.
he looked younger, much less stressed than how he did now. he looked happy.
“daddy!” she cried, stubby arms reaching out to him.
jake laughed, immediately swooping down to grab his daughter. “i’m gonna get you!” he taunted, voice teasing and soft.
[y/n]’s small voice shrieked with joy, turning and attempting to run. unfortunately, her father was far too quick, his large hands grabbing her by the waist.
she cried out, laughter flooding her voice as he lifted her into the sky. [y/n]’s eyes squeezed shut as he soared her through the air. and then, everything changed.
the wind picked up, and she felt lighter. the air was thin from where she flew. at the change in her senses, she instantly opened her eyes wide, her stomach crawling into her throat as she took in the sight.
she flew through the skies atop an unfamiliar ikran. the ground was very far beneath her, it was merely just her and the atmosphere.
the one thing that did accompany her, however, was the sight of sky-people technology, specifically that of the rda. it was large and dangerous. ammo was stacked within the ship that flew in front of her. she ship that she was flying towards.
[y/n] screamed at the creature to stop, but it was as if she couldn’t open her mouth. she had no free will, in fact. no, she was merely watching the scene unfold from eyes that weren’t her own.
she gasped as she jumped forward and off of the ikran, bow pointed at a soldier standing aboard the ship. a fierce battle cry left her throat raw, tears pricking her eyes from the wind that pierced them.
her feet thudded against the metal ground, grabbing men and throwing them one by one. she was actually doing quite well!
she smacked a few with her bow, multiple ending up thrown overboard. but, just when she was getting to the last of them, one of the humans released a round of bullets. each one embedded themselves into her chest.
[y/n] screamed at the feeling, warm pain spreading from her chest outwards. she could feel it in each of her limbs, a feeling of a throbbing numbness.
before she knew it, she was free falling, the wind roaring in her ears. and then, it all flashed to complete black.
[y/n] awoke from the spirit tree, and she couldn’t breath. her chest hurt, it was so tight. she could not feel her arms and legs, they were numb.
immediately, she detached her queue, stumbling backwards as best as she could underwater. cries left her throat, but all that came out was bubbles upon bubbles.
every second that went by, her vision began to darken. she could not see, could not hear, could not think. everything hurt. so bad.
neteyam was the first to notice. it was almost as if, through his urge to protect, he instantly felt that something was off in the universe, and as a result, he left the spirit tree earlier than anyone else.
at the sight of his big sister floating helplessly, screaming as loud as she possibly could, his heart burst. what happened? he was quick to act, bringing everybody else back to reality as he swam over to [y/n].
when the eldest sully felt her brother’s hands grab her’s, she felt a little bit more at peace, although not by much. all of her senses were out of whack, simply put, and she was in so much pain.
she barely even noticed as neteyam swam her upwards to the surface, and, thanks to her lack of oxygen from screaming, she kept fading in and out of consciousness.
once they broke the surface, the first thing to leave her throat was a scream. “it hurts so bad!” a sob took over her voice, each word shakier than the one before.
“sh,” neteyam attempted to calm her down as he brought her over to his ilu, getting her to lay on top of the creature rather than float in the water.
beside them, tuk bobbed up and down with tsireya, kiri, and rotxo. “[y/n]!” she cried, repeating herself a multitude of times. kiri clasped a gentle hand on her shoulder to quiet her down.
“what happened?” kiri panicked aloud. “what is happening, sister?”
the only answer she got was another choked cry. “it hurts. oh, it hurts so bad.”
“go!” tsireya called their attention. “you must get her back to the village.” neteyam nodded, boarding the ilu as he wrapped his arms safely around his sister.
“let’s go.”
neteyam and his ilu shot into the distance, kiri, tuk, rotxo, and tsireya not far behind. kiri held the youngest sully between her arms, attempting to comfort her, but it was extremely difficult considering kiri herself was worried.
the only reason neteyam was composed was because he had to assume authority, as weird as it was considering [y/n] was always the one to fill that role. as soon as he swam into the docks screaming for his parents, his heart began to rise to his throat.
when he watched his big sister get carried away in the arms of their father, pain panged deep within his chest, worry overtaking all of his emotions.
not one of the sully siblings sleep all night, especially lo’ak upon returning and learning that he was not there to help.
upon waking up a few days later, after a multitude of different attempts from norm and maxwell to ronal and eywa, she is immediately attacked by love and care from every member of her family.
when [y/n] first wakes up, she cannot help but cry. although she is no longer in pain, she can’t get the image out of her head. the way that na’vi died, no matter who he was. it was sad, it was gruesome, it was unfair.
the one thing to bring [y/n] back to reality was the small body of tuk who laid herself on top of her, the youngest sully’s arms wrapping themselves around her big sister.
“[y/n]!’ she cried, her small hands laying against [y/n]’s. “i am so glad you’re okay.”
once tuk noticed her new sense of consciousness, it did not take long for the rest of the family to pay their honorary visits, each of them having their own sense of emotion to them.
neteyam’s was more relieved than [y/n] could have imagined. he was so worried, so concerned for his big sister. he told her about his prayer to eywa, he told her about how scared she’d made him. she couldn’t help but smile, another round of tears pricking her eyes ( this time more bittersweet than sad ).
kiri was quite teasing the way that she threatened, “if you ever do that again, i’m going to kill you!” she told her of the way they’d all been so worried for [y/n], the way they’d all forgotten that their oldest sister actually had feelings and could get hurt. “we’ve just been so used to you taking care of us!”
lo’ak told jokes. he updated her on the ways of life in the past few days, told her of the reef. a part of lo’ak wanted to avoid speaking of her event because of how difficult it was to visit what could’ve happened, so he avoided it with his humor. as he always seemed to do.
tuk didn’t leave her side once. she made bracelets for her healing sister, she ranted about the reef, she made dinner with her. there was so much to do, so much to talk about! after a few days of [y/n] being asleep and healing, tuk had a lot of quality time to catch up on.
neytiri and jake, of course, were just so happy she was okay. it took a while for them to get rid of her siblings, wanting them to get their own time together before they had to remind her of whatever’d happened. but, they needed to understand.
once neytiri asked her, tears immediately pricked her eyes. as [y/n] retold the events, she had to pause multiplied times to keep herself from choking on her tears.
by the end of it, jake and neytiri exchanged glances. the story was far too familiar. but, they also decided that was a problem for another time. they just had to thank eywa for keeping her alive.
overall, the sully family learned a valuable lesson. just because [y/n] seems invincible does not mean that she actually is.
missing fali hours fr 😔😔

for him

the sullies were more than accustomed to the idea of sacrifices. from repeatedly risking their lives on the battlefield to leaving the only home they ever knew, the sullies had gotten quite familiar with giving things up.
but, nothing would ever prepare them to lose a member of their tight knit family. especially not the eldest daughter.
ronal promised them, just before disappearing behind the curtains of her healers marui, that [y/n] was in safe hands, and thanks to their quick delivery of the girl from where she’d originally been stranded and injured, there was a very big chance that she would not only survive, but be okay.
but, there was also a chance — small, but a chance nonetheless — that she wouldn't be okay. that she wouldn't survive, or even worse, that she would survive and have to live a life burdened.
the image of their dying sister continued to flash through the sully siblings’ minds. her bloodied body flushed up against the wet sand, a low tide barely brushing over her toes every now and again. what made matters worse was the human made knife sticking from her gut.
when would this war end?
neteyam stared at his shaking hands, still covered in [y/n]’s blood. he tried to scrub it off, but the sticky liquid seemed to have flooded into every crevice imaginable. he’d been the one to take charge, the one to immediately apply pressure to the wound while ordering lo’ak to get their parents. kiri was quick to join him, on her knees and making sure that there weren’t any other hidden wounds.
these children — her baby brothers and sister — were brave enough to immediately act, and yet fali couldn’t move. as soon as he saw the sully girl with blood soaked into the sand below, it felt as if his feet were sunken and stuck.
the only thing to bring him back to light was the small hand of tuk.
now, the siblings plus fali stood outside, anxiously awaiting any sign of news. fali was pale, hovering in the back as thoughts of the absolute utter worst circled throughout his brain.
neteyam, kiri, and lo’ak had their own worries, their own anxieties. that was their big sis. if anything happened to her, the sully family was a mess. they would do anything to keep her alive, just as she would do the same for them.
but tuk, oh little tuk, was focused on bigger things. brighter things! somehow, the little ball of energy just knew her sister would be okay. tuk had never met someone stronger than [y/n] ( besides her mother, perhaps, but [y/n] had to learn it from somewhere ), so she had no doubt that her big sister would pull through better than before.
so, she decided the best thing she could do was work her own magic. it's what her sister would want, after all.
once again, fali found himself pulled out of his anxious thoughts by a small hand in his, and then… and then a tear dropped. it was small, practically nonexistent, but he knew. and tuk knew.
but she would never tell.
and then, as if eywa herself had come down with a blessing of her own, jake and neytiri walked out of the marui. they were the only ones originally allowed in after ronal declared her healing finished.
the tension rose at the sight of the adults, fali barely even noticing as his grip tightened around the youngest sully’s hand. tuk fought back a smile at the feeling.
wide eyes stared desperately at the adults, the silence consuming them as they all silently wondered the same thing. is [y/n] going to be okay?
as soon as a smile softly brushed onto the faces of both parents, a relieved breath left each other their mouths, tears threatening to spill as they realized just exactly how terrified they were.
“she is okay,” jake confirmed with a nod, his own eyes growing teary. his baby girl was strong, he knew that, but even seeing her in the slightest bit of pain felt like failure. failure as a parent, as a former olo’eyktan, as a protector. but, she was okay, and she would continue to be okay.
at the words, the siblings didn’t even wait to burst through the marui. even tuk found herself running alongside kiri, letting go of fali’s hand. sure, she loved fali, but nothing would beat the love she had for her big sister.
and so, even though fali found himself alone once again, fali didn't mind walking behind the four of them. he didn’t mind having to wait his turn, having to stand alone in the back as he laughed at each of their reunions and interactions. he didn't mind waiting, because he knew she was waiting for him too.
and eventually, after what felt like a thousand years, he approached the bedside. “[y/n],” he teased with a smile.
“fali,” she replied, energy matching him almost exactly if it weren't for her pure exhaustion.
and then, without another word, fali leaned down and kissed her. she was real, she was okay, and she would always be okay. if not for herself, then for him.
a/n: okay, this is a fun one !! a long one, but a fun one. the details kinda got crappy nearing the end because i lost the motivation to stay strong, especially since i just wanted to publish it, but hopefully you enjoy nonetheless. all interactions, although specifically reblogs and comments, are appreciated !!

atwow ( feat. [y/n] + fali )

₊˚.༄ okay, so… how do i even begin this? i guess it’s probably best to start from the top — from the very very beginning. when times weren’t so tough, when joy rang itself throughout high camp far more often.
₊˚.༄ most specifically, the birth of the omaticaya’s future tsahik, [y/n] te suli neytiri’ite. jake sully and neytiri’s first born daughter — their pride and joy, if you will.
₊˚.༄ she was an adored child all around the camp — even from infancy, she was full of her mother’s attitude and her father’s leadership.
₊˚.༄ a perfect but dangerous combo, if you will.
₊˚.༄ as much as the young na’vi was fascinated by the ikrans, the weapons, the war meetings, all the of the things that seemed to follow her father around ( as much as he hated it all ), there was also a very large amount of pride within both neytiri and mo’at that [y/n] was just as infatuated with their culture.
₊˚.༄ the food, the clothing, the music, the jewelry, the songcords — and don’t even get me started on the dancing! they always adored the way she waddled around on her short, chubby legs and clapped to the tempo of the drums that surrounded the dance floor.
₊˚.༄ and to think… that used to be a normalized event… before the sky-people somehow made things worse than they ever had. who even knew that was possible?
₊˚.༄ minus her own personal upbringing regarding her home, [y/n] also quite enjoyed her family. even when she was introduced to not one, but two babies around the same time thanks to the mystery that was grace’s avatar.
₊˚.༄ nevertheless, [y/n] welcomed both her biological brother and adopted sister into her arms. it seemed that, even from the very start, she was built to be the big sister, nevermind being a leader in general!
₊˚.༄ the age gap between her, neteyam, and kiri was large enough that [y/n] stayed ahead of them in skills and learning, but it was also small enough that they adored each other’s company.
₊˚.༄ then came lo’ak, of course, the child that gave his entire family a headache from the moment he exited neytiri’s womb. nevertheless, [y/n] didn’t discriminate — she loved her siblings equally! well, depending on the day, of course.
₊˚.༄ no amount of love for her baby brothers could keep her from ripping each of them a new one if they dared scare her ( and trust me, as they grew into teenagers that lacked intellect and self-control… well, it became a very regular occurrence )
₊˚.༄ tuk, of course, was just a pure angel that each sully sibling silently declared was a top priority in any situation. even if lo’ak ( yes, lo’ak, because it was always lo’ak ) managed to drag the baby of the family into a life-threatening situation, all four of them were ready to lay themselves down if it meant the youngest survived.
₊˚.༄ and, if we’re being completely honest, each sibling was more than prepared to sacrifice themselves if it even gave the others the slimmest chance of survival.
₊˚.༄ that’s the way of siblings, afterall! as much as you gripe, and hate, and fight, you also would do anything for each other!
₊˚.༄ but, siblings and the relationship between the five of them was only a tiny detail in the life of [y/n].
₊˚.༄ yes, she was the future tsahik, and yes, she’d always nurtured that future for herself. so had her parents! but, that meant that she wasted years of youth away training for a future that felt like eons away.
₊˚.༄ she often wished she could’ve gone back and fought for her childhood.
₊˚.༄ neytiri and jake often wished for the exact same. it’s never an easy thing knowing that you were the reason your child suffered the way that they did.
₊˚.༄ but, even though there did seem to be a lack of positive child-like memories, she still possessed stories that she could never forget. stories of her huddled in her father’s lap ( along with the rest of the sullys ), listening with wide eyes as he recalled some dramatic story of the battlefield. splashing in the river with her siblings. letting her father throw her up and down as she shrieked in enjoyment.
₊˚.༄ [y/n] yearned for the simplicity that life once was. but, that was never how it went — not for anyone.
₊˚.༄ the beginning to the complicated adulthood that her life broke into stemmed from, of course, her rite of passage: the iknimaya.
₊˚.༄ she was the first of the five children to perform the daunting task, and even though she was very well prepared, she could still recall the nerves that coursed through her veins leading up to the event.
₊˚.༄ although, it all became worth it once [y/n] began climbing the hallelujah mountains, a beauty incomparable.
₊˚.༄ when she finally got there, she automatically volunteered to be the first of her group. she wanted to get it done ( and she wanted to pride her parents — also brag to her younger siblings, but that was besides the point. )
₊˚.༄ while her parents had prepared her for a patient experience, waiting for the right ikran and all, she was pleasantly surprised that she found hers almost immediately.
₊˚.༄ at the sight, she nearly grew disappointed. it was a tiny little thing, at least compared to others.
₊˚.༄ but, with a small size came the advantage of maneuvering. the little bastard sure knew how to fight!
₊˚.༄ [y/n] grappled with the creature ( that she later honored as the biggest pain in her ass, right next to her brothers ) for a span of time that both felt like one hundred years and three seconds.
₊˚.༄ the relief she felt when she finally strapped its jaw shut!
₊˚.༄ but, of course, that only pissed it off more. in that moment, [y/n] realized she’d finally met someone that was as pissy and petty as she was, because [y/n] soon found herself — legs tucked tightly and arms fumbling for the queue — falling from the cliff.
₊˚.༄ she forced the panic down and back into her stomach, the anxiety becoming only a motivator of the situation at hand, and soon the adrenaline kicked in.
₊˚.༄ as the bitchy ikran decided to tuck her wings in and head face-first into the abyss below, [y/n] didn’t give up on creating the bond.
₊˚.༄ and then, just as they were about to crash into a floating mountain that waited below them, the two queues connected, and [y/n] found her instincts working faster than her brain.
₊˚.༄ soon, the two pulled up swiftly and dangerously close to a death-inducing collision. together, they dodged all sorts of obstacles in the way, and [y/n] quickly began to appreciate the small size of her ikran.
₊˚.༄ neytiri and jake were more just happy to see that their daughter actually survived.
₊˚.༄ that, of course, led to a whole new world. hunting, specifically! and, of course, the idea of being a true warrior.
₊˚.༄ it started off slow at first, but due to her history of sitting in on war meetings with her father and other clan leaders, she was also considered quite knowledgeable.
₊˚.༄ throughout the next few years, however, she gained enough trust with her father and her clan to be considered on one of the lines of defense when it came to their raiding parties.
₊˚.༄ that in itself took quite a bit of convincing from [y/n] to her parents, but she had a way with words.
₊˚.༄ of course came the fateful raid in which she disobeyed ( something that absolutely shocked her siblings — that was a rarity! not that she loved following rules, but she also was well aware of her expected role of leadership in years time. )
₊˚.༄ [y/n] ended up, with the advantage of her small ikran, joining the first line and taking over the skies. she swiftly dodged every obstacle, twirling around and avoiding falling helicopters and bullets headed for her skin.
₊˚.༄ she was, if anything, a menace. and everyone was more than impressed. how could such a young na’vi hold so much skill, never mind the potential of who she could become?
₊˚.༄ jake didn't let that stop him from reprimanding her, of course ( but even he couldn't hide the pride that swelled when others came up to him, complimenting his daughter’s skills )
“i don't give a shit how good you are, you’re still in trouble.”
₊˚.༄ nevertheless, her act secured her a role in the sky during raid parties. as long as she swore to keep herself alive!
₊˚.༄ she did, obviously.
₊˚.༄ that brings us to the start of the movie, i guess! most specifically, the opening raid in which her two idiot brothers try and get themselves killed.
₊˚.༄ two spotters inspired by their big sister’s gusto, after all.
₊˚.༄ she barely caught them in the sky before they landed on the battlefield below, attempting to convince them the best option was to change their minds and not get themselves killed.
₊˚.༄ neteyam seemed to be with [y/n], but nothing could diminish lo’ak’s spirit.
“i'm telling,” [y/n] threatened teasingly, although she really would prefer if the two turned around and took her better judgment for once in their lives. “don't you dare,” lo’ak groaned, eyes narrowing at her in annoyance.
₊˚.༄ but, [y/n] was fully aware that this was a conscious decision. if anything, she could appreciate the two for scouting out any opportunity that highlighted them in front of their father.
₊˚.༄ even so, she didn't feel good letting them fly down and into a world of danger that they didn't know. not without her, anyway.
₊˚.༄ and so, if you couldn't tell, the three of them delivered themselves onto the battleground together. [y/n] initially ordered them both to follow her lead, but not even a few seconds later, the two boys were nowhere to be found.
₊˚.༄ it figures.
₊˚.༄ and then, of course while searching for them, she did end up reaching them again. this time, however, she managed to catch the very unhappy eyes of her own father.
₊˚.༄ but, as you may recall, there was a small interruption before any emotional damage could be done, resulting in a whole new set of issues.
“do not play with that!” [y/n] hissed, snatching the gun from her youngest brothers hands. “you are too reckless to be trusted with anything bigger than a bow.” lo’ak scowled, giving his sister and unimpressed look. “dad taught me,” he declared, matter-o-factly. “well, if you haven't noticed, that same dad has very much noticed our presence.” [y/n] was too tired to deal with this.
₊˚.༄ just as neteyam opened his mouth to respond to either his sister’s well-placed point or his brother's annoying bravado, a gut-dropping word echoed through the air. “incoming!”
₊˚.༄ they ran, naturally, and of course, managed to become the victims to a shot right at their heels. lo’ak and [y/n] tumbled a few feet while it seemed the neteyam took flight.
₊˚.༄ it didn't take long until [y/n]’s ears were ringing, and she stared straight up into the angry eyes of her father.
₊˚.༄ later, after her own ikran swooped down and let her board in an impressively smooth fashion, the nearly reunited family was able to fly back to high-camp together
₊˚.༄ the entire ride, the three siblings were cringing in anticipation
₊˚.༄ even neteyam, who flinched every time he grimaced
₊˚.༄ of course, they were all severely reprimanded, and that included [y/n]... something about keeping an eye on her brothers, keeping them safe
₊˚.༄ she didn't argue, mainly because she knew better, but she fought the urge to roll her eyes. the whole reason she joined them was to keep them safe!
₊˚.༄ but, life moves on — although she did feel guilty that she let neteyam get hurt, even if he insisted it was his fault.
₊˚.༄ she should've led the way. she should've been hurt, not him.
₊˚.༄ it seemed that the idea of eldest sibling guilt was a reoccurring theme, for not even a day after, [y/n] found herself on a scouting mission alongside her parents and neteyam
₊˚.༄ her heart dropped at lo’ak’s message — never mind when she heard tuk was with them!
₊˚.༄ obviously, both her and neteyam were ordered to stay with the ikrans when they finally got to the old battlefield, but the one thing that [y/n] won't stand for is her siblings in danger
₊˚.༄ so, naturally, the two joined ( even at the risk of their own parents’ fury )
₊˚.༄ when they got there, they crept under the brush and leaves for coverage, but eventually [y/n]’s eagerness got the best of her and she told neteyam it would be best to split up
₊˚.༄ that was how, as the rest of her family ran from the gunfire to safety, she found herself pointing her bow right at quaritch
₊˚.༄ too bad another avatar popped out of nowhere and aimed his gun right at her — she was just thankful that said avatar was either a terrible shot or just very nervous because she came out unscathed
₊˚.༄ she sprinted through the forest at a speed she didn't know she could reach, nearly tumbling in the process
₊˚.༄ [y/n] nearly fell over in fear when she ran into her family
₊˚.༄ while she tried to process the event that just took place, her mother was busy checking her from any harm done
[y/n] pushed neytiri’s hands away with a tearful shake of her head. “i am fine, mom,” she insisted. she then turned to lock eyes with jake, a rough look settling in her eyes. “how did they get here?”
₊˚.༄ in that moment, jake and [y/n] burst into one of their infamous arguments that it seemed only an eldest daughter could have with her father without being punished for life
₊˚.༄ they argued about their safety, about how they should track those avatars down and kill them for what they’ve done — [y/n] was far too new to the field of battle to understand what statements she was making
₊˚.༄ plus, it seemed her heart was speaking louder than her head was
₊˚.༄ until it broke into one of those heart shattering moments where she’s upset and ranting at jake, tears start flowing, and they each creep closer to each other with every word exchanged
₊˚.༄ and then he like… closes his arms around her and lets his girl cry into his chest
₊˚.༄ yeah…
₊˚.༄ anyway, as you can probably recall from the fic that started this all ( which, if you haven't read it… well, what are you even doing here ?! ) [y/n] was justifiably upset with the fact that they had to leave
₊˚.༄ like, while everybody else was creeping and listening in with their own shocked emotions, [y/n] had to fight to tears when she heard the decision
₊˚.༄ she had to leave her home.
₊˚.༄ and not only her home, but she had to leave her future behind. the same future, mind you, that she had wasted her childhood to train for.
₊˚.༄ what was the point now?
₊˚.༄ but, she had to appear strong for the sake of her family. that was all [y/n] knew to do.
₊˚.༄ sure, she shed some tears, but only in her own private time. she couldn't let anyone else see. she had to just pretend, that was all.
₊˚.༄ yada, yada, this was all basically covered in the og request from like a hundred years ago
₊˚.༄ kinda cray
₊˚.༄ anyway!
₊˚.༄ that includes the flight, emotions, and her arrival to their new home
₊˚.༄ to which, by the way, ronal was like of course upset that a child stood up to her, but also… a child stood up to her. that was impressive! and as much as she hated the idea of the newcomers, especially the mother and her eldest daughter, she could also appreciate both of their upbringings and attitudes as powerful women of their clans.
₊˚.༄ moving on, when the sullys take their first swim, [y/n] joins ( hesitantly… ) and is struggling quite a bit
₊˚.༄ they run into the metkayina siblings, but she sees a peculiar face that talks with rotxo and ao’nung — a male, around her age, with tattoos lining his body
₊˚.༄ he wasn't half-bad looking!
₊˚.༄ but, after a quick moment of eye contact between to two ( in which [y/n] have a skeptical stare and he offered a welcoming smile ), he was off, riding his ilu in another direction
₊˚.༄ she loved the idea of the sea, but it almost seemed like the sea despised the idea of her. she couldn't do shit! and it was extremely infuriating.
₊˚.༄ the embarrassment she faced when she attempted to ride an ilu…
₊˚.༄ and the way that rotxo, tsireya, and ao’nung all attempted to help her with her breathing!
₊˚.༄ well, that’s fali’s cue.
₊˚.༄ the same na’vi that had smiled at her was back, and his name was fali. he was an extremely close childhood friend of tsireya and ao’nung ( and ultimately rotxo as well )
₊˚.༄ he was a bit sibling! like [y/n]! perhaps they could be friends?
₊˚.༄ well, we all know how that went… ( again, refer to the linked fic from earlier if you're clueless )
₊˚.༄ also i have absolutely no idea how time works here so i'm creating my own timeline between events because i want to give fali and [y/n] more time to fall in love
₊˚.༄ after she finally learned to breath, and after they finally kissed, she was noticeably happier. like, scarily so.
₊˚.༄ but, they were all far too busy to act on it… yet…
₊˚.༄ it was while the relationship was secret that ao’nung decided to be an ass and tease kiri
₊˚.༄ her and fali had been the ones to break up the fight when they witnessed it from a nearby location in which they were originally trying to enjoy each others company
₊˚.༄ while [y/n] soon placed her anger on ao’nung after hearing the story, fali slapped his up the back of the head in disappointment.
“you're gonna get in so much trouble.”
₊˚.༄ and then nevermind when she later heard what this bitch did to lo’ak… oh my, she was contemplating hitting a child
₊˚.༄ to which fali discreetly rested a calming hand on her lower back because they're adorable
₊˚.༄ never one did fali stray from [y/n]’s side of the argument — he was just fully aware of how much of an ass ao’nung was. a lovable one, but an ass nonetheless
₊˚.༄ and imagine her annoyed that, for once, lo’ak took the blame. he couldn't have done that literally any other time and take their fathers wrath from his own siblings? good lord.
₊˚.༄ oh, and when her parents decided to team up on neteyam for not keeping an eye on lo’ak… yeah, [y/n] wasn't afraid to fight back. not anymore, not when she had a new purpose and a new life, and not when she had fali.
“it is not his fault that you where the one to tell him to make peace, no matter what. i don't understand why you push the blame onto every child before you reach yourselves!”
₊˚.༄ of course, she didn't know that wasn't true, but it was enough for neytiri and jake to rethink
₊˚.༄ when it came time for the kids to all gather and listen to lo’ak’s story, [y/n] and fali sat on opposite sides and avoided eye contact on all fronts
₊˚.༄ until, of course, it was found out that the tulkun he’d befriended was anything but safe
in concern, her eyes flickered to inevitably meet fali’s. with eyebrows furrowed and a mouth downturned, she silently asked the question, is this true? a silent nod of his head affirmed her wonder.
₊˚.༄ after lo’ak decided to leave in anger towards the rest of the group ( and tsireya followed ), they all broke apart
₊˚.༄ but, fali and [y/n] soon found each other, an array of worries exchanged between the couple
₊˚.༄ the comfort that was offered was incomparable to anything else they could have recieved
₊˚.༄ and then, later, when she arrived late to the marui, she caught kiri’s knowing gaze
₊˚.༄ it was the next afternoon that they all were made aware of the eldest sully sibling’s relations with fali
₊˚.༄ again, that was in the original request, but you may also find interest in the written interaction between fali and the rest of the family
₊˚.༄ moving on and back to the actual plot, both [y/n] and fali — now officially known to the world as a couple which meant a lot of longing looks and laughter — joined them on the swim to the spirit tree
₊˚.༄ that was fantastic… until it wasn't…
₊˚.༄ the panic that surged through her ( next to the adrenaline and urge to protect ) was overwhelming as kiri had her seizure
₊˚.༄ and then the way that fali held her after they got kiri back safely
₊˚.༄ [y/n] was in a state in panic, and this boy just hugs her right and tells her that kiri is safe, repeating it over and over
₊˚.༄ what a guy!
₊˚.༄ oh yeah, and then the tulkuns return later — that's also been written!
₊˚.༄ unfortunately, the happiness doesn't last long, for lo’ak is soon not only reprimanded, but in deep shut because of his connection to the outcast tulkun, payakan.
₊˚.༄ then comes the killings of the tulkun, an event that can only be traced back to the humans
₊˚.༄ the humans. the humans that drove them out of their home, the humans that hurt her siblings, the humans that have wrecked her life.
₊˚.༄ for once, even as jake and neteyam attempt to convince the metkayina that fighting is not the answer, [y/n] feels like insurmountable urge to stand with the na’vi of awa’atlu
₊˚.༄ she feels the urge to stand beside fali
₊˚.༄ but, that doesn't mean she can ignore her trouble-seeking brothers and sisters, and neither can fali
₊˚.༄ for soon, the two of them are jumping in ilus and speeding after lo’ak and the rest of the kids
₊˚.༄ they were going to warn payakan
₊˚.༄ when they found out that he’d been tracked, both fali and [y/n] jumped to action and began yelling orders — if no one else would do it, then they had to keep the kids in order
₊˚.༄ when the humans attack them, [y/n] is taken alongside tuk, lo’ak, and tsireya
₊˚.༄ fali and neteyam are the ones who stick together, their main goal being to save their siblings
₊˚.༄ once they are saved, [y/n] splits with the boys ( not missing the chance to give fali one final kiss ) and joins tuk and tsireya
₊˚.༄ but, of course, she ends up captured again with her sisters — not without a fight, of course, but she’s not match for the weapons that they have
₊˚.༄ especially without a weapon of her own
₊˚.༄ she barely managed to shank quaritch’s thigh with a loose scrap of sharp metal before he grabbed by the hair, gun pointed straight at her forehead
₊˚.༄ she clasped his wrist, trying to get him off of her, but it was no use. he kicked her arms down with a swift movement, a sharp pain shooting up her arm
as she sat there, the only escape being the barrel of the gun against her head, she stared straight into the avatar’s eyes. “do it,” she hissed, summoning the language her father had taught them through their childhood. “shoot me. kill me.” and then she paused, her lip lifting in a nightmareish grin. “i dare you.”
₊˚.༄ while he did contemplate it, quaritch merely moved his gun quickly and carefully, knocking her right in the head
₊˚.༄ she collapsed onto the ground, unconscious.
₊˚.༄ she looked so much like her mother — everything about that girl was chilling to quaritch.
₊˚.༄ it was later, when the sully parents arrived that she finally awoke to a thick bicep wrapped around her throat
₊˚.༄ she thrashed, panic ensuing, but she was stuck in quaritch’s grip — kiri was besides her, but he had a knife against her throat
₊˚.༄ across from them, jake stood with neytiri, both protecting poor little tuk
₊˚.༄ it was almost as if [y/n] was trying to decipher whether or not she was dreaming — everything felt clouded in a way
₊˚.༄ she nearly couldn't follow as neytiri grabbed spider, held his to her chest, and threatened quaritch with the confusing words, “one of ours for one of yours.”
₊˚.༄ she hasn't really woken up from delirious state, not even after she was thrown to the side by the rocking ship, the strong current pulling her under the surface
₊˚.༄ [y/n] was dragged alone to the bowels of the ship
₊˚.༄ she was alone, and she suddenly realized that she has to be dangerously independent — she has to channel the person she used to be, the person she was before fali
₊˚.༄ every stroke she took was painful, every deep breath causing her to flinch
₊˚.༄ the salt water stung in each wound, sobs echoing in the tight space
₊˚.༄ but, she didn't stop
₊˚.༄ she couldn't stop.
₊˚.༄ and then finally, finally after risking death multiple times, she reached the surface and spotted the sullys hanging onto the fin of payakan ( all of them, even neteyam )
₊˚.༄ it was there, after a family hug and sobs of relief, that she finds out that fali — her fali — had taken a shot in order to save neteyam
₊˚.༄ again, read about this! ( yes, he is alive )
₊˚.༄ but… honestly yeah i guess that takes us to the end of the movie. neteyam is alive! fali is alive! everyone is okay!
summary: [y/n] has always been an angry girl. why wouldn't she be ready to fight any avatar that puts their hands in her siblings?
sully family x sully!reader
a/n: i just did this one for fun because i wanted one where she's an absolute boss and a half. love her !! remember , reqs are open and waiting. i probably won't write anymore fali x [y/n] stuff unless i get specific reqs because they're really difficult to write without direct inspo and ideas. once again , motivation is really important to keep me writing , so please comment feedback + reblog !! i would seriously appreciate it. ( also , for some odd reason my two most recent works have barely gotten any interaction -- idk if that's just bc tumblr is being a problem , or if it's because fali has lost his magic touch ( which if so , i completely get it ) , but if you guys could help me out to try and figure out what's going on ?? )

![Summary: [y/n] Has Always Been An Angry Girl. Why Wouldn't She Be Ready To Fight Any Avatar That Puts](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7379cf5b4933c6cfdd15d2165f019c94/a66dd8097b036442-3f/s500x750/7f90f9d5039995597da033661c2caead04d89cdc.gif)
nobody quite understood the rage that naturally flowed through the veins of the women in the sully family. nobody quite understood the urge to protect that seemed to be carried between each and every one of the children that jake and neytiri shared and adored together. nobody quite understood… not until they experienced it themselves.
and trust me, plenty of people have experienced it, humans and na’vi alike. even from a young age, there were times where one of the kids were ( one-hundred and ten percent ) willing to fight another kid if it meant they would stop picking on their siblings.
luckily — of perhaps unluckily, depending on the perspective — that shared agreement only seemed to get stronger with age. as the relationships between each kid developed, as more seemed to join the family in general, there was a camaraderie between the five sully kids. even tuk, just a tiny thing herself, was well aware of her willingness to risk her own life if it meant she could save her sisters and brothers.
that being said, there was absolutely no way any of her older siblings would ever let that slide, but it was a sweet sentiment on its own.
even though this habitual response seemed to run through every sully’s blood, it was strongest in the eldest girl.
being neteyam’s twin — younger by just a few minutes — allowed for [y/n] to balance him out. while he had the expectations of future olo’eyktan on his shoulders from the moment he graced pandora with his birth, [y/n] was a freer spirit.
she was also a much more angry spirit.
not that she held fury against every person she interacted with, but [y/n] wasn’t scared of disliking anyone. she also wasn’t scared of letting them know that she didn’t like them; a blessing and a curse, the sully family often called it.
but it stemmed further than that. it ran stronger than that.
from a young age, jake taught his oldest daughter how to channel her anger much healthier. what did jake sully consider a healthy outlet? well, fighting, of course.
so, the sully child that’d been this close to fighting another kid in lo’ak’s honor? yeah, that was [y/n].
not to mention her iknimaya — the rite of passage that quite possibly boosted this girl’s ego far too high. she deserved it, though. not many young na’vis could complete the event in such little time, especially against the pain that her ikran was.
he was a bitter fellow, similar to his spirit sister. angry at the world for every little thing and always ready for a fight. they truly were connected in every possible way.
but, her iknimaya was physical evidence that fighting fire with fire never worked. the truth was that one flame had to overcome the other — one flame had to envelop the other. it was just a matter of which flame was stronger.
[y/n] knew from the moment she locked eyes and that joyful, adrenaline-filled grin blessed her face that she would win.
thank eywa she believed in herself, because neytiri and jake nearly lost all of their faith at the sight of the monster that towered over the young girl.
another notable moment — or perhaps a series of moments — of her oh-so optimistic and joyful personality was prompted by her very own father. if there was one thing that the oldest daughter was confident in, it was her father’s love. she knew that he loved her — loved all of them — and that made it extremely easy for her to argue with him on any topic she disagreed with.
as annoying as it happened to be to jake, neytiri loved that she was raising a strong woman. it often reminded her of herself at a young age.
but, every single one of those stories were child’s play compared to the raw anger that surged through her body when her and her siblings’ lives were held under knife and gunpoint.
[y/n], the original rebel and inspiration for lo’ak’s ‘admirable’ choices, was happy to join the crew on their adventure through the jungle. with lo’ak grounded from flying due to his choices just the other night, he’d practically begged his older sister to join them.
they were partners in crime, afterall.
once neteyam decided to become all responsible and stuff ( not that [y/n] blamed him… but it was disappointing ), [y/n] and lo’ak seemed to have magnetized toward each other, although that might be a sign to turn the other way and run as fast and as far as you can.
either way, [y/n] found herself exploring the similar jungle scene alongside all of her siblings minus neteyam and with the additional presence of spider.
as soon as the familiar scene turned not-so familiar, it seemed that [y/n] had a feeling. a feeling that something was wrong, that something else was creeping. she should have listened to her gut.
and that same thought resurfaced as soon as the stomach-dropping view of the avatars overcame her view from the bushes.
it was only once said avatars put their hands on her baby siblings that the familiar settled, bubbling beneath her thick layers of skin. it was only when [y/n] fell into an eerie silence and state of pure calm that every other sully sibling felt their own fear.
even as tuk squirmed and cried against the bruising grip of the avatar’s, even as kiri cried out at the sharp knife edge against her throat, even as spider fought his restraints, even as lo’ak stared into the terrifying eyes of the same man that had nearly killed his father…
[y/n] stayed perfectly compliant. stuck on her knees, queue throbbing at the feeling of her opponent tugging it, [y/n] merely stared straight at quaritch. silently, her urge to fight was building, and everybody that knew her was perfectly aware. and ready.
she ran her tongue smoothly against her fangs, eyes narrowed straight at the man that threatened the lives of her siblings.
a solid thirty minutes had already passed, eclipse coming quicker than [y/n] would’ve preferred. she just had to hope that, without being used to their forest and bodies, the avatar’s didn’t have the same keen night vision as she did.
“you okay there, kid?” the avatar teased, attempting to startle her with his threatening voice. he tugged her braid, nearly drawing a hiss from deep within her rib cage, but she held it back. he seemed to be bothered with the fact that her eyes hadn’t once left the body of their colonel.
but, for once, she drifted her gaze to meet her perpetrator and summoned english for his benefit. “ask again in a few minutes.”
and, almost as if [y/n] could feel the presence of her parents, a familiar bird call echoed through the nighttime breeze. her ears pressed back against her head in shock before she quickly recovered and flashed an innocent smile to the avatar.
he merely grunted, pulling her braid one last time for good measure, and looked back up at quaritch.
now, she just had to be patient. she could do that. well, as long as she got what she wanted in the end, and that was a good fight. she deserved it after letting the chains rub back and forth against her wrists, eating at her skin through the friction.
that being said, as soon as her mother’s signal became clear, she straightened up and locked eyes with lo’ak. a discreet nod was enough between them. grab tuk and go. she knew kiri and spider would handle themselves.
plus, the extra connection between spider and quaritch was just another layer of protection for her baby sister. perhaps it was a terrible way of thinking, but [y/n] wouldn’t dwindle too much on it. the urge to survive had its faults, afterall.
and finally, once neytiri’s arrow soared through the air, it was go time.
while lo’ak and tuk bit the arms of their restraining avatars, lo’ak also doubling duty and releasing whatever gas canisters had been accessible on the guy’s belt, kiri and spider were lucky enough to be given a chance to run as soon as the avatars lifted their guns.
[y/n] liked to do it the hard way, though.
she swung her legs in a swift motion, wrapping them around the avatar’s. she weighed his bottom half, keeping him from being able to move far, and in a split second, neytiri’s arrow was embedded in his chest.
[y/n] let go, scrambling to her feet and up the nearest tree, finding a moment of solace nested in the upper branches. she could see everything, and they couldn’t see her — she was a master of disguise and hiding, if anything.
and then, it seemed the world went a few clicks quieter, gunfire calming down just a tad. one scan of the scene, and [y/n] knew it was because they’d lost sight of her siblings.
“the kids are gone.” a voice crackled through the walkie strapped to a dead avatar’s chest at the base of the tree, the small noise quiet against the chaotic scene. [y/n] was merely lucky she was in little enough of a proximity to even catch the words.
“what do you mean gone?” quaritch. she could tell from his stingy accent and infuriating pronunciation of vowels.
a beat of quiet against more raining gunfire. “the boy and youngest girl ran off. tarzan and the other girl split to the opposite direction.”
“which other girl?” [y/n] felt a familiar smile on her face.
“what do you mean —”
quaritch was angry, and [y/n] couldn’t help but find pure enjoyment from the scene. little did he know that the young na’vi girl could now see him from her spot in the tree, eyes narrowed on the colonel hunched behind a fallen log.
“there are two girls. one of ‘em quiet and useless, the other looks like her devil of a mother.” the same mother that managed to kill him the first time.
[y/n]’s eyes focused on the demon in na’vi skin, watching his face contort at the familiar arrow pierced in the wood beside him. it was almost as if he’d conjured her very own “devil of a mother” into existence. “seems that very mother might be in attendance this fine evening.”
[y/n] scrunched her nose in disgust, her skin crawling at his words. she really could not stand him. but, her attention was quickly pulled back to reality when he dropped the walkie and called into the open air, all while reloading his gun, “that you, mrs. sully? i recognize your calling card.”
instantly, [y/n]’s head whipped around, locating the exact tree in which her mother hid behind. unfortunately, [y/n] was a few feet away and at the worst possible angle to help.
“why don’t you come on out, mrs. sully?” quaritch continued, and [y/n]’s eyes followed a different avatar that began to creep past the colonel. “you’n i, we got some… unfinished business.”
“demon!” neytiri’s voice caused panic to spike in the young na’vi’s heart, blood pumping with adrenaline. “i will kill you as many times as i have to.”
it was only when [y/n] looked back at quaritch that she noticed the other avatar was missing. a million different curse words rattled deep within her brain, eyes widening in fear.
meanwhile, quaritch would not be distracted from his tangent. “i guess you an’ the corporal have been pretty… busy, haven’t ya? got yourself a whole litter of… half-breeds.”
what could she do?
as quickly and as silently as she could, [y/n] scrambled through the wet tree branches, cursing herself every time her feet lost grip. nerves added up with rain never helped.
at the very last second, [y/n] reached a spot in which she could just barely see her mom. well, her mom, and the avatar that had a gun aimed right at her. just as [y/n] opened her mouth and prepared to scream a distraction, an arrow flew right through the avatar’s body.
gunfire followed almost immediately after, and her dangerous balance finally lost way, causing the girl to topple from her position and into the muddy ground below.
[y/n] was quick to stand up — she had to be — but the scene was not a pretty sight to behold.
she was surrounded. surrounded by three different avatars, each with their own weapon that could quite easily hurt her, if not kill her on the spot. she just prayed that, if they did manage to get to her, she could make them scream first.
[y/n] knew she would. it was always just a matter of mentality, right?
and so, as if the clock slowed down just for her, [y/n]’s eyes flashed around her and gauged every detail possible. the machine gun, loaded and prepared ( although she had noticed that it was already halfway empty ), in the hands of the avatar to her right, the two knives ready in the hands of the avatar to her left, and the last avatar just in front of her. nothing but his fists.
a smile surfaced.
she could deal with that.
and then, before the rest of her body returned to the consciousness of time, her feet began to move. [y/n] lifted her arms so she could see her wrists — still wrapped in chains — and she leapt upwards.
her long legs gave her a higher jump, bringing her and her hands to the perfect height to wrap her chains around the weaponless avatar’s neck. she swung herself around, legs hooking his torso as she tugged with every bit of strength she could muster.
at the chaotic sounds around her, [y/n] knew that bullets were being fired now. lucky for her, she had her very own personal shield, but that meant the tree she was choking was about to go timber.
once she felt the warm splatters of his blood against her stomach, she knew she only had a matter of time before getting squished under a dead man’s weight. [y/n] shifted her weight, unhooking her legs and placing her feet on his hips very carefully.
[y/n] kept her ears aware at all times as she leapt up and off of the now dead avatar, pushing him onto the ground with her jump. her ears moved vigilantly, picking up the sounds of the bullets just before they were shot so she could move just in time to avoid any casualties.
and then her favorite sound rang through the air. an empty cartridge.
at that, her infamous smirk surfaced as she locked eyes with the now useless avatar.
now, behind her, the third avatar with the knives thought she was being slick, creeping behind her with both weapons raised to stab her in the back.
luckily, [y/n] was far too aware and far too pissed to miss such an important detail.
just as the third avatar broke through stabbing distance, [y/n] whirled around and disarmed her in a quick movement. both knives flew into the air, and she swiftly grabbed each of them.
each blade found their own homes embedded in the chests of her enemies
and then, just like that, she’d won.
[y/n] huffed for air, three dead avatars laying around her feet. blood pooled, swirling in an overwhelming pool of maroon. and none of it was hers.

EVERY CORNER OF THIS HOUSE IS HAUNTED. (1)

Synopsis ! Jake had taken you as his own after Tsu'tey's passing, leaving no one to care for you. Things had been good before your relationship with him had blurred along growing of age. You and him fought all the time; argued each other's ear off and tonight was no different-- except words have been said, severing the already damaged bond. Content & warning Jake sully x Daughter!Reader, Sully kids x Sister!Reader Neytiri x Daughter!Reader. (wc; 3104)

Jake knew a saying; held onto it ever since he had resided amongst Na’vi– every person is born twice. While he believed that it meant that the second time is when you earn your place here in Pandora, Eywa had a clever way of broadening the idea. His very children were proof of it.
He thinks it’s the great mother’s way of compensation, perhaps a second chance for him to do better– to do his very best to keep them alive on behalf of those he lost.
While Kiri was a special case enough, you too were an odd one.
You are Tsu’tey's daughter. Turns out, he had someone in secret while he trained to become olo’eyktan– when he was supposed to take Neytiri for himself. It was taboo– absolutely wrong to become unfaithful to one’s mate. But following the carnage of the great war, when Tsu’tey had so selflessly sacrificed his life, only then did Tsi’ewa came forward; told everyone of their love and what could have been. She was a simple songstress along Ninat, but it was her round and bulging belly that caught everyone’s attention.
It caused an uproar and understandably so. After all, Neytiri had only announced her rebellion with Jake not long before, but when the people connected the dots themselves and both stories had become one, they understood that their hearts merely yearned for another and no one should have ever dictated otherwise. Arrangements had been made and condolences were exchanged— everyone can only look back and wish that things could have been different.
Jake was supposed to take you under his wing as a way of honoring him– he owed Tsu’tey his life and perhaps an apology as big as so. But after your mother had unfortunately died during your birth, he knew to himself that he had to take you in; not as a responsibility, but as his own blood and flesh. His first daughter.
You were the loudest baby, he recalled. That day, Jake had rocked your body back and forth in his arms frantically, while Mo’at and Neytiri did everything within their power to help Tsì'ewa. Your cries were ear-splitting, enough to wake the whole clan up.
“Just what do I do with you,” He muttered under his breath, eyebrows knitted in frustration– just where do he hold you? Is he doing it right? Are you hurt? Why are you crying so loud?
“Jake, the baby!” Neytiri’s shout from inside had cut his train of loud thoughts, snapping back to your bawling. He wasn’t doing such a good job.
“I’m trying, Neytiri– this thing won’t budge.”
Neytiri had emerged from the hut, stomping her way to Jake with a scowl. "That is not a thing, you skxawng!" she exclaimed before gently scooping you up from his arms, cooing softly to you– though it was more like mocking him instead. “Does Jake here make you cry?” She said, patting your thigh soothingly. “He’s not at all pleasant to look at, but you have to get used to it.”
Almost in an instant, your cries had died down. You babbled along with her, like you were agreeing with her every word. He slowly pulled himself closer to Neytiri, eyes wide with curiosity as he watched your small hands playing with her long braids. “Heh, she has Tsu’tey’s eyes,” He whispers, unable to look away.
The flap of the hut swinging open was the only thing that got their attention, momentarily away from yours as they looked at Mo’at with anticipation. With a single shake of her head, sorrow surged their hearts, eyes traveling back to your innocent ones. They mourned for you; an unknowing child should never have to carry such grief. They had to make a choice– A responsibility they weren’t expecting to have so early.
Jake mindlessly trails his finger down your stomach, gently, like you were the most fragile thing. Your little hand wraps around it and it was like you had binded his scattered thoughts into one big understanding.
Sully. You’re one of them now.
Jake releases a breathless chuckle as he gazes upon his lover and you with a newfound clarity, a perspective so bright it illuminated in his very eyes. Then came an idea– the desire of having children of their own. Perhaps that’s why Neteyam came after only two years. You were quite the ploy; the push they needed to start a family.
You were truly blessed– the genius of your age was undeniable, your remarkable talent soon earning you the admiration of all who had seen it. By the time you turned six, you had already mastered many of the abilities that a hunter would need– your skills with a bow were unrivaled by most of the children your age, let alone those who were much older than you. They'd marvel at your accuracy each time you took aim with an arrow. You could never miss. You had to make sure you didn’t.
By the age of 12, you had already accompanied Jake in hunts. You had developed a knack for planning, coming up with routes and back-up plans that were often surprisingly effective. You have proved to be helpful plenty of times. You were quick, silent– full of poise. They often wondered if you were an old, seasoned soul trapped inside a little girl’s body.
But as quickly as the spotlight had shone down on you, it left almost as soon as it had come.
(“What you did today was reckless, y/n.” Jake settles his bow on the table aggressively, emitting a sharp thud. You were just as frustrated, throwing your satchel down the floor of the hut.
The mission had gone rather wildly, with things not going along the plan. There was another airship– one that no one was aware of. Your instincts jolted your body, immediately throwing an explosive towards it which had it blowing all over the place– its pieces crashing and causing a wildfire.
Jake argued that there could’ve been a more safer way. One that didn’t have to risk more of our resources and supplies; one that didn’t have to injure the other warriors. Of course you knew to yourself that you did the right thing. You did what you had to do.
‘You could’ve been hurt and got others killed! Just what were you thinking?” He continued to berate you. You jest that if this went on, there’d be steam visible above his already heated head.
“I had to take a risk– not everything goes to plan and this is proof of it.” You answered back with a scowl, “If I hadn't, there would’ve been more casualties.”
“That’s not a call for you to answer to! Jesus Christ,” Jake runs his palms down his face, grunting, before looking back at you– expression suddenly tired and soft. “Come on kid, where’s that sweetheart who always listened to what I said?”
You had scoffed, a hurt forming on the pits of your stomach. “That sweetheart once had a place in plans before.” You said, eyes unwilling to look at him. It weighed in your heart heavily– why did people assume that you were the only one who changed? You didn’t understand. “Pretty sure the Jake before was a good listener too.”
The wrinkle in between his eyebrows deepened in confusion, but he never was one for confrontation. With a single dismissive grunt, he turns his back against you. “I’m way past your attitude. You’re grounded. Go.”)
As you grew, the resemblance to your father became ever more apparent. Jake started noticing the many similarities between the two of you; the way you walked– how you sauntered confidently through a crowd. Your braids would move along your heavy steps (and perhaps, that’s where Neteyam got his mannerism of swaying his too.), shoulders wide and proud. You even had his signature snarl, something Tsu’tey was known for that unfortunately seemed to have been passed down to you too.
However, it was more than how you brought yourself. You were strong-willed– stubborn.
There was another thing about you too. You didn’t call Jake dad anymore. It hurt him– left a heavy feeling on his chest every time you regarded him so distant. It was unfair that you still called Neytiri mom, why did it have to change with him? He didn’t have the heart to address it. Couldn’t ask you what went wrong.
Because he knows damn well why.
Lo’ak was enough of a headache, but you were a different kind of royal pain in the ass, more like a personal problem. It was tiresome. Petty. There was not a day that you and Jake wouldn’t argue and bite each other’s ass off– and yet, there was never a day where you two would talk it out. The fights would blur itselves out and before they knew it, things would be back to normal, only for it to fall out again over something small. It was routine. The only thing normal for you both.
He missed you– missed his baby. Just when did you grow to become so distant? When did he start to overlook you?
You’ll admit, you might have indulged in the folk’s gossip. They always had a story for everything and they have plenty about your father. Tsu’tey was a fit olo’eyktan. He had proved so in his training and determination. Of course it was a low punch in the gut when the throne had been passed to an outsider– a demon, most of all. It was unfair, he knew it wasn’t right. A washed up marine had taken something he had worked for like it was nothing. Like he was nothing.
You pitied your father and you feared you’d be like him– like nothing.
And history might just repeat itself. You weren’t clueless– wasn’t blind to the fact that Jake had trained your brother more. He adored him so much that the very moment he was in the right age to train, you were off to fend for yourself; trained all alone while Jake went over the routine with Neteyam like he did with you. You remembered waiting for him every afternoon because he promised that he’d make time– that time was yours and yours only. But as the light bled and neared eclipse and you were too cold to wait outside, you learned never to wait again.
They would come home soon after– smiles on their faces and a handful of apologies for you.
Soon enough, your suspicions proved you right as the people started to talk again; Neteyam– the golden child. He would make a good olo’eyktan.
Perhaps that would explain the drift between you and Neteyam too. Could they blame you for it? You had lost their attention so early– while you still needed them. You weren’t their kid and you were reminded of it everyday. In times when you didn’t know if you had space in the family hammock while they sat together, telling stories under the starry sky. You pretended to have fallen asleep everytime; back against them as you listened. In times where the family was growing and growing, until the small table wasn’t big enough for everyone anymore– or in this case, for you.
(“Come on, ma’ite, what are you doing so far from here?” Neytiri had called for you when she noticed how distant you were from everyone. You silently scooted beside her, wooden bowl in your lap. “Look, I prepared your favorite.”
It wasn’t. You hated it. You hated the tangy taste of it so badly. But you had decided to eat what was left on the table after everyone had gotten their meals and there wasn’t usually enough for you. Neytiri thought nothing of that– didn’t think that you eating only scraps and dried fruit was because there wasn’t anything else for you to have. She simply thought that it was your favorite and had been making it for you ever since.
You didn’t have the heart to tell her. Not when she thought she had been doing well with preparing it. You kissed your teeth, smiling tightly as you lifted the food to your lips, eating silently. “Thank you, it’s good.” You muttered under your breath after.)
But you were family; they said so themselves. When they tucked you in to sleep, when they patted your head. They were still present now, just not in the way you wanted– not in the way you longed for. It seemed like making them angry was the only way you could have their attention– particularly, your dad. You could never make Neytiri mad. She tries to understand you, she does. Explaining now just seems so.. Petty. So childish, you decided to push her away instead.
What do you tell her? That you only let dad blow a fuse or two was because you missed him? Because you didn’t know what went wrong?
So there goes your routine.
“I just don’t understand why I can’t be olo’eykte.” You had brought up again, lips in a familiar snarl. “You tire me and for what? Kiri is already training to be Tsahik– just what would my place in this clan be?”
“We are not having this conversation again, y/n. Not tonight.”
Jake had just returned from a particularly bad hunt; went home empty-handed and with a patience as thin as a strand of hair. He continued to sharpen his dagger, movements almost aggressive. Everyone immediately went out of his way, not wanting to be on the end of his temper– not you though. You could never get a hint, it seems.
“Yes, tonight! My ceremony is almost near, sir. I have been waiting.”
It wasn’t like he had a reason anyway. Jake couldn’t tell you because he had no reason as to why. Why couldn’t you be olo’eykte? You had all the skills to be one, even more so. But in the back of his mind, a thought so deep and petty that he couldn’t bear to say, tells him that the name he carried was something to gift his eldest son. Olo’eyktan was a privilege reserved for Neteyam. He never thought to have you so early– he always dreamed of having a son first.
“Wait more.”
“This is insane– sa’nok!” You had turned to Neytiri, eyes pleading. She quickly grasps your arm and tries to tug you back towards the exit, speaking in a soft but firm voice as she tries to soothe the tension.
“Ma’ite, why don’t we go out for a walk?” She whispers. To be frank, she was tired of this– never of you, no. But at the way things had been. Parents aren’t parents automatically just because they have had children of their own. It’s a skill they have yet to muster– to truly understand. She didn’t know where the line between you and her had blurry along the years. Didn’t know where this constant need of yours to be seen came from.
You jerked your arm away from her, almost too harshly. It tugged on her heartstrings, not knowing what was going on with you. “I cannot wait anymore.” You said, taking two steps towards Jake with an unreadable anger– an anger he didn’t know when had stemmed from.
“Is it because I’m not your daughter?”
His eyes widened. A flash of vulnerability visible in his gaze, momentarily softening his glare. “You stop this right now, y/n.” He had stood up, tucking the dagger back to his loincloth. Jake’s larger frame towered over you, telling you to drop it– to leave the conversation. But you weren’t backing down.
“I am your eldest–! You trained me earlier than Neteyam, I have been here long enough–”
“You aren’t ready!” He had shouted with the same fierceness, earning a dirty look from Neytiri.
“Why won’t you see me?” Your voice had softened, borderline begging– just a bit, but enough for his ears to flatten in response. He knew that beneath those few simple words lay many layers of underlying meaning; emotions that have yet to be spoken.
But he turns his back against you dismissively anyway. “Neytiri, get her out of here.”
Neytiri grabs you by the arms again, although a bit forceful now, but just enough for her to touch you– to have you in between her arms. She embraced you, like she was trying to keep the words from escalating. She feared one of you would say something out of line; something you both would regret.
But on the brink of the tension– the severity of the situation, you had muttered. Your voice was muffled, but it was clear. The message was oh so crystal. “You took everything from my father.”
Jake grunts, “Yeah? Well maybe your father wasn’t enough either.”
“Jake!” Neytiri hisses and although Jake couldn’t see her, he knew very well he was getting quite the conversation with his mate too.
It was a low blow. Unnecessary. A straight strike to the gut. It was a pain so bitter, you didn’t want it to linger any longer– you were nauseous. You wanted no more than to vomit everything that spiraled out of your stomach.
“You want to lead so badly and you can’t even control your temper. No clan wants a hot-head for a leader.” But he kept going– relentless and cruel. “You ought to be someone else’s shadow.”
“But I’m your daughter,” Your tone had softened, almost cracking as the lump in your throat grew. Tears blurred your vision, threatening to escape as Neytiri held you close.
“And yet you never listen to me— because I’m not exactly your father, yeah?” With one last glance, he stepped out, passing his children who stayed just outside the door, listening. Jake opens his mouth, desperate to ease the tension– the discomfort written in their faces, but he quickly shuts it and continues to walks out. He had said enough for tonight. There was nothing saving his face from this. It was best if he left instead.
“Oh, ma’ite.” Neytiri rocks her body along yours, drawing soothing circles on your back but the embarrassment settles in your chest– gnawing at your body. You catch a glance of the pitiful looks from your siblings as they try to enter the hut silently.
How could you make a mess out of yourself in front of them? Why had you let this blown over?
You retracted slowly from your mother’s hold, wiping your tears before running the opposite way from where Jake had gone to. It was better if you left instead.

“You will make a good olo’eyktan.”
Jake snorted, downing the last dregs of amber liquid from his worn wooden glass. He shook his head in amusement as he put it down on his lap– It must be the alcohol speaking, he thought to himself. Tsu’tey had been speaking vaguely; roughly in between asking where his loyalty lies and if he was willing to stay for the people. To say Jake was confused was an understandment, and he wasn’t a brick of a wall to not feel that something was wrong.
“Don’t you mean would?” He asked, refilling his cup. “I would make a good olo’eyktan. A possibility.”
Tsu'tey's merely shook his head as he finished his beverage, letting a few drops of liquid trickle down his chin. He didn’t bother to wipe it away, gaze far into the crowd of young warriors celebrating themselves. The festivity had gathered everyone and his eyes darted constantly to his lover– the one who rightfully had this heart.
And that was something Jake had noticed about Tsu’tey tonight, he realized. Tsu'tey was never truly looking at him. Although he had only spoken to him on this particular night, his eyes never once met Jake’s; it seemed as though he was constantly searching for something else– someone.
Could it be Neytiri? His heart seized as the thought crossed his mind. He was selfish. Eywa knows just how impure his soul is; how cruel he is to love a promised woman.
“What is that human word you use when you have not been truthful?”
One of the things he became aware of as he continued to learn life in Pandora was that the Na’vi didn't recognize or understand the concept of lying; there wasn't even a word in their language for it. It was a revelation for him, that such an integral part of his motherland - dishonesty and deception - was nonexistent here. He feared he would be the one to taint their morals, to be the example to its definition.
Jake was a liar.
“You mean lie?”
Tsu’tey nodded. “I fear I have done such a thing.”
Jake furrowed his eyebrows, narrowing his eyes in thought, but he couldn’t bring himself to pry– not when his eyes seemed distant once more. He thought he looked at Neytiri, but standing beyond her was the figure his eyes desperately sought. Tsi’ewa looked like a vision in the firelight, her every gracefully swaying movement becoming alive in the mesmerizing glow of the large bonfire.
And she was just there– how could she sit there and laugh and look so beautiful?
Jake puts an awkward hand to his shoulders, attempting to comfort him with a pat. “Eywa will forgive you– whatever you did.”
But Tsu’tey only shook his head again. His steady hand made quick work of refilling his cup to the brim once more, as if he was trying to drown out the rising truth that was spiraling from his stomach. He paused for a moment before lifting it up to meet his lips, “No. She would have to ask for my forgiveness instead.”

“We must tell the people now.”
They continued to walk aimlessly, steps wide and quick. The night had seemingly stretched on for hours since the gathering had ended, and they were growing ever more irritable– both bodies awash with alcohol and both minds clouded with judgment. “Your thoughts are muddled, Tsu’tey. You’ve had a bit too much to drink.” She said in a dismissive tone, making it clear that she didn't want to discuss the topic further. Tsi’ewa was nothing but distant— tonight where Tsu’tey felt most painfully vulnerable.
“I can think just fine, Tsi’ewa.” He carefully takes her arm, steering her to face him. “We have to tell the people now.”
“And risk your place in the clan?” She quickly swats his hand away, her face twisted with a troubled expression. “I will not let you ruin your name.”
They finally stand still, exhausted— bodies glistening in sweat. Tsi’ewa frantically looked around, perhaps for something to hurl or something to tightly squeeze'; anything to relieve the knot that churned deeply inside her stomach. Letting out another lengthy sigh, she finally looks at Tsu’tey. “I am but a songstress, Tsu’tey! Someone who people wouldn’t care enough to give two glances.”
“And why do they matter?” He replied in the same tone, just as defeated as she was.
“Because I am nothing. I am unheard, I am not seen– but you. You are to become leader. The people need you, Tsu’tey.” She steps in closer, just enough to feel his warm breath fanning over her face. Her finger digs into his chest as she speaks, pressing harder with each word that spills from her mouth. “You have to choose.”
“I do not have to. It is you who I want.” He answers, almost casually– like he had lost a screw or two to trade such a title for something so miniscule. Tsi'ewa releases a frustrated sigh, her posture wilting in defeat.
“You are being stubborn!”
“And you think too low of yourself!”
Silence envelopes their heaving bodies once more. He takes a deep breath before speaking, “I am unhappy with the union– it is against my will and most especially my heart. Do not make me choose the people.”
He finds promise in the crooks of her body, the warmth of her palms; a place of sanctity he wouldn’t mind kneeling to for hours. It was the kind of romance so tender, it would dissolve right on his tongue the moment he would consume it– he just knew he would love her for a very long time. Tsu’tey would let his title be damned if it meant having her for eternity.
“We will be miserable.” She whispers.
“Only if you push me away.” He answers.
Who knew Tsu’tey was quite the romantic? Well– people would’ve known if they had given him the chance to truly love. The day he died, Tsi’ewa knew her heart was buried along with his.

The flickering firelight created a somber ambience as Jake sat motionless, lost in thought. The dancing shadows casted by its light created an indescribable feeling of unease– an overwhelming weight of dread settling on his shoulders. His mind raced endlessly, thoughts clamouring in his head to be brought to the forefront.
The clan– the people. His family. Himself. Deafening, deafening sound.
Quartich was back and he had to think fast. Sure, they were far from where the old shack is, but it wouldn’t be long until they were eventually found. The thought strikes an indescribable fear, reeling him in and getting the best of him.
To say Jake was tired was an understatement.
Tired is a word used to describe how one feels after a busy day; one that promises a better tomorrow– a green light that lets you go ahead and continue once more. He fears this is more than just casual exhaustion, but something that threatens to bury him six feet under.
And then there was you; a particular voice desperate for a minute of his time. He hears your voice, even in mind. His stubborn eldest. You might as well be the reason for why his hair is turning white so early. He thought it was just a phase– he thought that every child would eventually grow out of their angsty-teenager stage. Heck, he went through one back on earth. Jake was once a little boy too, he’d know.
But as time stretched on, he realized that your actions had rooted from actual hurt and not just some juncture in life. When you said you hated him, you actually did. When you said he was being a shit father, he actually was. He made you feel that way.
Jake wonders when it happened– what had slipped through his fingers for everything to become so messy. He swears he hears you as much as you don’t think he isn’t listening.
You’d make a great olo’eykte. He knows it. Somewhere along that line frightens him– makes him terribly uneasy. He doesn’t mean to tell you otherwise, but in his eyes, you will always be his little girl; the same kid who cried to him once because everyone had been too mean. Jake would burn the whole world if he had to; shed blood if it meant your safety.
Being a clan leader meant exactly that. He knew you’d do everything to ensure everyone’s safety, even if it meant your life. Jake wasn’t ready for that– he wasn’t ready to hear that his little girl was capable enough to not need him.
He wished he’d rather made that clear instead of severing your already strained bond. The gulf between you two has grown too wide for him to bridge the gap, and it's slowly eating away at him.
There was just something so complicated between a father and a daughter’s relationship– a kind of complication that neither of you could tell what you really meant. He wishes he could understand you; take away the troubles that made you restless. Maybe then, your eyes wouldn’t feel so distant– maybe then, you wouldn’t look at him like he wasn’t your own dad.
He numbly reaches for the machine gun– its surface still emanating heat from its earlier use. He can feel its weight in his grasp, a firm reminder of the violence that had just transpired. He clenches it in his hands, his sweaty palms pressing against its hard surface in an almost comforting way.
“The children are fine and taken care of,” Neytiri gently announced as to not worry her already troubled mate. “Your mind is clouded, ma Jake, tell me about it. ”
“Just thinking,” Neytiri sat in front of him, allowing the silence to linger for a moment longer while she awaited his response. “That maybe Tsu’tey had been hinting at his relationship with Tsi’ewa for much longer than we thought.”
That wasn’t at all what her mate had expected him to say, thinking that he would likely talk about what had happened back at the old shack. The wrinkle between her eyes deepened as she questioned aloud, "Why is this being brought up now?"
Jake released a lengthy exhale as he released the empty shell from his gun, letting it amble towards the fire pit. “Maybe I could have done something to save him from dying a warrior’s death so soon.”
Neytiri straightened her leaning posture, clicking her tongue. “This isn’t about Tsu’tey, is it?” The way Jake's reaction was almost too subtle to notice only solidified her suspicions. His posture seemed to slightly change, his shoulders stiffening ever-so-slightly as if he was attempting to contain the emotions running just beneath the surface. “It’s about y/n.”
“Always about that daughter of ours.” He attempted to make light of the situation, stifling a chuckle. This demeanor was a thin veil for the obvious elephant in the room and he wasn’t sure if he wanted to make it known just yet. “Hard headed and snobby, just like Tsu’tey.”
“Has it ever occurred to you that maybe she got it from you instead?” Neytiri narrowed her eyes at him, mouth twisted in a slight scowl. When Jake only released a snort in reply, his gaze still fixated on the machine gun, she lightly swatted him on the nape of his neck with a hiss. “You are too hard on her– on everyone! Don’t you think that you’re being too harsh on them?”
Jake winces before replying, voice firm and just as loud. “I am only doing what I can to protect everyone.” He flails his arms around, trying to emphasize his words. “Everything that I do is for them. You think I enjoy being like this? Being the mean parent?”
“Then stop!”
Jake let his long fingers run through his hair, slightly tugging at the braids in exasperation. His eyes closed for a fleeting moment as he drew in a sharp breath, attempting to compose himself. “It’s not that easy, Neytiri. They had their knives right under our children’s necks– I’m only trying to keep this family alive and together.”
“By pushing everyone away? By telling your eldest that she isn’t enough? Listen to what you’re saying, Jake! You aren’t hearing yourself!” Neytiri presses a finger into his chest. “This isn’t about war– it wasn’t always about fighting. It’s about you and the children.”
Everyone falls silent, letting the weight of their words settle in the air. The only sound is that of the distant fire crackling, filling in the otherwise unbearable quiet. They took in each other’s heaving figures, eyes softening in mutual understanding.
“You’re scared you’re going to fail her like you think you did with Tsu’tey.” Neytiri whispers softly this time. Jake’s ears flatten in response– stiff shoulders slumping in defeat.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Neytiri.”
“Oh please– you are never this rough with Kiri and Tuk. Y/n is your daughter too, so why does she have to be on the receiving end of such hard affection?” She lets out an agitated scoff, “You do not hear her, ma Jake. When she shouts, she does not call for Toruk Makto– ma’ite does not challenge the olo’eyktan. She yearns for just you, her father.”
And that was Neytiri for you; ever the wiser one. She always knew what to say. Jake looks at him with such tenderness– an admiration that was strikingly reminiscent of the first time he ever saw her.
“You fathers always do not know what to feel– what to say. So you tend to be less understanding, because in that way, less words are spoken. Silence is better than talking it out, yes? Ma’sempul was the same. Only when he died did I realize– but will you take it to your grave before you let her know that she is loved?”
A daughter is only a daughter once, not until you make her forget.
“Make her understand. Your intentions are fair, but your ways are ill— they are ill, Jake.” Neytiri's words stung like a slap in the face, she might as well strike him straight to the chest. It rendered him speechless, yet he knew something shifted— and for the better. “She is your daughter. Not Tsu’tey’s.”
His daughter.
“Am I a bad father, Neytiri?” His voice had cracked and she swore she could hear the faint breaking of his already fragile heart. The realization slowly seeped into the wrinkles of his weary face, accentuating the creases from fatherhood itself. He failed everyone and he knew it. He always thought his actions were justified– but it was the consequences that struck him the most: He didn’t know Neteyam’s favorite color, but he knew how odd he held his bow.
He didn’t know his children.
“No, just misguided.” Slowly, Neytiri cautiously wraps her arms around his rigid form. She can feel the warmth of his skin against her face as she nestles her head into the crook of his neck. She swears he could hear the rapid beat of his heart and it pounds in sync with hers– they were both lost and terribly exhausted. “I know earth did not allow you to be soft, but you’re not alone anymore. Put your burdens at ease, ma Jake.”
Jake returns her embrace, squeezing her body softly. He allows himself to bask in the moment of stillness, taking in the sweet smell of her hair and skin. With a shaky exhale, he attempts to savor the fleeting peace before it's gone. When did everything become so difficult?
After a while, Neytiri finally stands, feeling the exhaustion of all she has endured today seeping into every fibre of her body. “The children are staying over at Mo’at’s for tonight.”
She stands there, lingering for a moment before finally turning to leave. “Just talk to her, Jake.”
And there he was, alone with nothing but the warm glow of the flickering fire to accompany him once again.

Fruits. You love fruits, he thinks.
Perhaps you didn’t get the memo that everyone was staying over at your grandma’s for the night; perhaps you were waiting for him to come home too. He carefully sliced the yovo fruits, placing them a bit too delicately on the bark bowl.
Jake was undeniably nervous. His own teenage daughter made him nervous.
As he slowly trudged towards the hut, his toe lurched into one of the wicker chairs– a loud string of curses exploded from his lips as he clamped his eyes shut in frustration. Through gritted teeth, he peered down to the seat. immediately noticing its snapped leg which seemed to mock him for his carelessness. He exhaled deeply. crouching down to take a closer look.
Funny enough, it was yours– your name glaring right back at him.
If there was something that he learned best back on earth, it was to be handy— good with his hands. (well, considering the lack of legs, he had to make use of thereof.) He thought he had cracked the code back then; giving everyone gifts and crafting whatever they pleased. Jake failed to realize that it was not more toys the children wanted– it was him. Just him.
"Listen, I'm sorry," Jake visibly winces at his poor attempt at an apology. He takes a pause, deciding on the right words to say before continuing, “Let’s talk about it, kid– promise not to raise my voice." He waits for her response but only silence greets him in return. He releases a deep sigh and mumbles under his breath, “-- or maybe not. This is fine." He carefully slides in the bowl of freshly cut fruits under the flap of the hut after taking a few moments to rest against its wooden walls. He looks around, his eyes wandering everywhere, “You listening?” He waits again, “Your father– he was a good man. A very good man, in fact."
“Neytiri was promised to him and he was to become the olo’eyktan. I was only an outsider; barged in and made a mess of an already good clan.” he reminisced, “He had every right to view me as a threat– heck, he could’ve even greeted my approach with a spear right to the chest the moment I arrived. He didn’t. No one did.”
“I’m thankful for that. Everything I have now is because of him.” He looks back at the entrance, hoping for even a flicker of light being lit by you– he thought maybe you were also leaning against the wall that separates you both. “I was wrong. Your father was far more than enough, and of all people, I should have known that better– should have known better than to talk shit about him to his very daughter.”
He exhales a deep, heavy sigh for what feels like the hundredth time, his frustration evident as he rubs the back of his neck anxiously. “Look, what I’m trying to say is. I miss you, sweetheart. I’m growing old– and while you aren’t getting any younger either, I want you to understand that when I shout, it means I want you to listen. When I push you to your limits, I only want you to do your best.”
He looked back at all the times where you and him argued– when he thought what he was doing was right. Jake wondered if he pushed you away everytime he raised his voice. He probably did.
“Well– raising my voice probably never worked because you always shouted back.” he says, shaking his head with a snort of laughter. No matter how loud either of them got, the other always managed to raise their voice even higher. “Time is fucking with me– you all are growing so fast. One second I’m snuggling with everyone in the same hammock and then all of a sudden I find myself making everyone a separate one because we’re all too big now.”
He grows quiet, a lump welling up in his throat that renders him speechless. “I’m not olo’eyktan– I’m no Toruk Makto. I’m just a father, baby. And I think that’s the most vulnerable I’ll ever be.”
“Never wanted any of you to fight. Never wanted to put everyone on the line for war–” Another breathy exhale, “I was scared. Fine, there it is, out in the open. My star failed me, sweet girl. I know how humans worked back there and they worked ruthlessly. We killed our own land– our own mothers.”
His stomach would lurch at the thought of it, an overwhelming pang of nausea stirring within him. Jake could barely survive back there– he truly was lucky to be chosen by Eywa. He could already be dead if not the past occurrences for all he knows.
“I wasn’t allowed to be gentle back then and I’m glad eywa is a lot more merciful here.” He looks up, staring at the starry sky. Earth had taken too much from him and ironically, it was also humans who kept ruining him here in Pandora too. Jake was always one step behind no matter how hard he tried. “But you got to give me a bit of recognition here, baby girl, I'm trying. I didn’t automatically become a father after having children. I think I’m forever learning. I still have a lot to go.”
“I did what I thought was right; I had to ensure that my family was safe, no matter the cost, and I didn’t even realize I put a damn war over everyone’s head. Sweetheart, I never wanted any of you to fight– I never wanted to put everyone on the line to battle. I would never wish for anyone to experience what I went through back on earth and funny enough, I brought it right to our doorstep.” And he felt his voice break as words tumbled out of his mouth in an incoherent pace, desperately trying to release all these emotions that had been clogging up his throat. He brought a hand roughly to his face in an effort to hold himself together, fingernails digging lightly into the delicate skin around his eyes. “I’m scared, babygirl.”
“Eywa was kind enough to give me children in the image of people I’ve already lost; Tsu’tey, Grace– hell, I even see Tommy on Lo’ak. That knucklehead is just too curious for his own good.” He didn’t know if it was a curse rather than a gift; every corner of his house was haunted and grief had made a home right on his very lungs.
He looks back at the flap of the hut and still no sign of you– even the bowl of fruits was left untouched. “Tough crowd.” He murmurs to himself before finally deciding to stand, his legs stiff from sitting still for too long. He awkwardly pats his thighs, shaking away the dust he collected. “Everyone is staying over at Mo’at’s. You can have the hut to yourself for the night.”
Space. Maybe you needed space. (And he was terribly wrong. Space was all that remained between you two.)
Jake starts to slowly walk away, yet somehow he feels like his troubles remain firmly on his shoulders. The guilt was there— all of it. He looks back one last time, praying. Eywa, give me one last chance. Let my daughter come running to me in an embrace and I’ll swallow my pride.
Nothing.
He felt his heart slowly breaking, the pieces of it slipping lower and lower down his stomach with every passing second. His mind was a mess; he could feel all his doubts and insecurities swirling about inside his body, each one vying for center stage. I am no better than my own father. I am no better than my own father. I am no better than my own father.
Unbeknownst to him, you were never in the hut to begin with. It was sick– such a cruel joke for the words you’ve been desperate to hear to be left unheard.

“Give me strength, dear mother. Tell me what I’m doing is just.”
You were kneeling on the damp, mossy ground close to the roots of the tree of souls, your hands tightly gripping onto your queue. The thick foliage that surrounded you was awash with the lavender hue that emitted from the vine-like leaves, lending you warmth from the chill eclipse. Woodsprites floated nearby, swaying close as if to welcome your presence.
Inching closer, you stretch out your arm before allowing the tendrils of your braid to coil around the hanging threads. Taking a deep breath, you let yourself feel– taking in the presence of Eywa.
Your mind was clouded. Once a dark space turned into something light– too light, it was almost blinding. Everything was blurry, almost like a dream, but you knew it wasn’t; knew well where you stood and why you were here to begin with.
Slowly, a vision emerges - a woman standing just a few paces from you. She feels something in the air and her ears perk up, as if she is trying to figure out the space she’s in too. Her head turns from each corner, cautiously checking the blurry surroundings. After a few moments of searching for something visible to the eye, she turns and finally spots you. A sudden shock passes through her body, evident by the way her eyes widen in surprise. She stands there for what seems like eternity, you can almost see the gears starting to move and click within her mind.
“Oh, my sweet child–”
She reaches out to envelop you in an embrace, but you take a step back in response. Her arms remain open– still hopeful that you’d run to her like how a child would to her mom, but you were just there, staring incredulously.
“I don’t know who you are.”
This couldn’t be Eywa. You would’ve known.
You two stood still, eyes drawing over each other’s lines and curves, trying to etch it in memory– then it dawned to you– could this be your mother?
“I knew Tsu’tey had the stronger genes, I just didn’t expect him to take up most of the space in your face.” She lets out a breathy chuckle, “Come close, child, let me see you.”
And you shouldn’t. You haven’t seen this woman all your life nor did the people provide enough stories about her. She was nothing but the person who had birthed and given you life– that should’ve been enough for you to run straight towards her, but you stood there, gulping down a familiar grief.
It’s weird for mothers and daughters to just coexist like she had not brought you upon the world at all. Sure, you have her eyes and you might grow to have her exact physique, but the word ma’ite sounded distant on her tongue– cold and unloving. Her arms weren’t inviting.
This wasn’t your mother. Mothers are kind and warm, like Neytiri.
Your legs moved forward in a hesitant pace, as if you were being pushed against your will. You stood closer, enough to let her cup your face. She lets out a choked sob– or was it laughter? You couldn’t follow. She lets her thumb mindlessly brush against your soft cheeks, eyes filled with so much love, you feared it would be too heavy. That love was reserved for you and only you– for all the ages you’d grow to be.
But all energy is borrowed. She has been carrying this longing tenderness for years in the afterlife.
You had Tsu’tey’s eyes, his lips. She’d argue that the nose is debatable, but surely if you rip open your heart, you’d find your mother’s own. Sweet, sweet child, forced to grow up too quickly. Tsi’ewa was sure you’d be the kindest soul.
You ponder deeply– what kind of life would your mother have had if you had never been born at all? Would she still be here, with all her vitality and vigor, relishing in the gift of her youthful years? Would she perform to the children, singing them lullabies they drift off into a peaceful sleep? The thought causes you profound anguish– your mother was just like you; full of life and once was a little girl too.
You wish you knew her enough to let the grief prolong.
“Time has been unkind to you,” She said softly, her fingers tenderly sweeping the loose strands of hair away from your face.
“You are not my mother.”
“I know.” She replies. Tsi’ewa doesn’t take it to heart how harsh your responses have been– you were just her little girl, lost and terribly misguided. “For all we know, I’ve only been one to you right now, so just this once– let my words bear meaning.”
You chose to wait; giving her the opportunity to slowly get acquainted with you, taking in every little detail of your face - from the stars of moles to the creases around your eyes. You were patient with her, allowing her to digest all that made you who you are – beyond just looks. She was just a mourning mother that grieved her little girl.
“You do not have to stay.” She whispers and her words hit a little too close to home, forcing you to squeeze your eyes shut and suppress a sob. “A boy would be Olo’eykte of the Omatikaya– but you, ma’ite, shall be mine.”
As the words slipped her mouth, you had finally granted her an embrace. You swear you had felt yourself turn smaller. Your head rests against her stomach, letting your ear listen for whatever you might hear. This is where you came from, you thought. Who knew a mother could bear a stranger? She clings to you with a desperate grip, preventing you from falling apart— as if it's her own way of trying to hold you together.
Just a bit more, Eywa. She begged. Give me a minute more to hold my girl.
I wish you’d give birth to me again, you cried, maybe then I’ll turn into something better.
You open your eyes, feeling beads of tears roll down your face. You mindlessly wipe them away, not truly grasping what had transpired or how the weight on your shoulders lightened. Woodsprites quickly flutter away once you regain consciousness. Your head shoots up, and a silent thank you escapes your lips as you bask in the warm glow of the light that touches your face.
Forgive me Eywa for leaving. Your ikran lets out a sharp shriek as you climb onto her back, taking steady steps up her body while gently caressing her back. The animal quiets down at your touch, eager to fly once more.
A heart is meant to be cupped by unscathed hands and if you cannot find palms big enough for yours, then you fear home is somewhere else.
