“I told you already, he said he’s busy right now.”
“Can you tell him again it’s urgent? Please?” Juliet looks up at the older boy who has his hands crossed over his chest. Guiltily, it crosses her mind that she doesn’t remember his name despite practically begging him for a favour.
“Please,” she says again, sounding much croakier this time, “I really, really need to talk to him. Tell him I’ll be quick. Please.”
The boy—Jeonghui? Jeonghun? She swears it’s either one—sighs. There’s a flicker of pity in his eyes, and after some deliberation he nods. “I’ll try, but no promises. You know how he is.”
Relief flooding her body, she nods vigorously. “Okay, thank you so much!”
Lips drawn into a thin line, he offers her nothing more than a curt nod before disappearing back inside the dance studio. Minutes go by, and Juliet’s about to give up yet again and leave when the door is flung open, revealing the person she came to see.
“Can’t this wait?” Seojun asks impatiently the moment he lays his eyes on her. She hates how even now he’s still devastatingly attractive. It makes her want to backtrack, take back everything she wants to say and tell him she’ll see him another time just so he won’t be annoyed with her anymore. But a small voice at the back of her mind tells her: No, this can’t wait. You’ve waited long enough.
So she stands her ground. “It won’t take long if you don’t dodge my questions.”
He pinches the top of his nose bridge, inhaling sharply as though trying his hardest not to blow up. “Sweetheart,” he croons with exaggerated sweetness—she knows that voice, the same one he uses when he wants her to go along with whatever he says—“it’s late, hm? Go home and get some rest. I’ll call you tomorrow, promise. Okay?”
God, she must’ve heard this exact vow at least twenty times before. Not once has he acted on it.
“No, I’m not leaving until we talk.”
Instantly, the forced smile on his face drops and his eyes narrow. “Fine, then talk.”
Juliet’s blood boils at his indifference; she swears to herself that tonight—she’ll get answers no matter what.
“What are we?”
“Not this again. I can’t have this conversation right now, baby—”
“Don’t call me that,” she snaps. Perhaps two weeks ago her heart would’ve still fluttered at the pet name, but now it feels more like mockery than flattery. “I can’t keep doing this, Seojun. Every time I try to talk to you about this, you just push me away. You keep saying we’ll talk about it another time, but you never want to and you never seem to have the time. I’m tired, okay? I can’t go on until you tell me how you feel.”
The sound that falls from his pretty lips is nothing less than scornful, and it’s clear her words have little to no effect on him as he casually puts his hands in his pockets. “I don’t know why we’re having this conversation,” he deflects, “you’re happy with me, no?”
The resulting silence is tense and uncomfortable. Is she happy with him? He’s sweet to her when he wants to be, and he always knows exactly what to say to make her feel better… but what about the stress, the restless nights, the frustration of being brushed off every time she asks him to define their relationship?
“I was,” Juliet begins slowly, “but I’m not so sure anymore.”
“I don’t get it. I’m good to you, I take you on dates, is that not enough?”
“Then why won’t you take it seriously when I try to talk to you about us? Why won’t you do anything about our relationship when we’re… we’re…” She can’t bring herself to say it. Are they dating? Sure, he’s never officially asked her to be his girlfriend, but he would send her flirtatious texts with red heart emojis, hold her hand in the car while driving, kiss her cheek when he drops her off at her dorm… people don’t do that unless they’re dating, or at least intending to date that person… right?
Seojun cocks an eyebrow at her. “We’re what?”
“You know what I mean! Why else would you do the things that only people in relationships do?”
“Who said anything about being in a relationship?”
It takes a while for his words to sink in. Her brain scrambles to process what she just heard, her heartbeat thrums loudly in her ears, and her arms lay stiffly at her sides, suddenly feeling as though they’re weighed down by bricks. As soon as she’s able to push through the white noise in her head, tears spring to her eyes.
“W-What?” she whispers, hoping he doesn’t hear the pounding of her heart. A part of her wishes he’d take it back, tell her he didn’t know what came over him, that he doesn’t mean what he just said. She’d be lying if she said she anticipated tonight to go smoothly, but maybe if she finally got him to see things from her perspective, he’d do something.
“Minyoung-ah, I thought you were better than this,” Seojun tuts, and she doesn’t know how he can be so callous in her most vulnerable state. “Have you never heard of getting to know someone first before you date them? If I wanted you to be my girlfriend, I would’ve said something a long time ago.”
No longer able to hold back her tears, she pathetically lets them fall. The wetness streaks down her cheeks and drips from her chin, yet he makes no attempt to soothe her, instead continuing to regard her with cold, empty eyes. She wonders how she’s never seen this side of him before—or rather, why she chose to ignore it for so long.
“So you’ve been stringing me along all this time,” Juliet sniffles, “were you ever going to tell me the truth?” She hates how pathetic she must look to him, and while there’s thankfully no one around to witness their exchange, she can’t help but feel utterly humiliated.
He shrugs, another display of his cruel, cruel nonchalance. “Does it matter? Now you know you’ve been overthinking this the whole time. I was trying to see if we’d make a good fit, it’s not my fault that you assumed I was your boyfriend the whole time.”
“Because you kept brushing me off! And you’re still doing it now!” she shouts, fists curled at her sides and shaking from both anger and the sobs that rack through her body. “I’ve been trying to get you to tell me how you feel about us for weeks, and you dodge the topic every single time! And now you want to blame me for everything?”
“God, Dahee was right: You’re so fucking dramatic.” She doesn’t know who Dahee is, perhaps another dancer on his team. And what does it matter anyways? Her heart’s already shattered. “Besides,” Seojun continues, “isn’t your schedule going to be packed soon? You won’t have time for a relationship.”
I would’ve made time for you no matter what. I like—liked?—you so much.
“Just go, Minyoung-ah. You’re making a scene, and I need to memorise this choreo by 11. We’re over, so leave me alone. You hear me?”
He heads back inside the studio without waiting for an answer, leaving her sobbing with her face buried in her hands. All she wants to do right now is sink to the ground and curl up into a ball, but it’s late and she’d much rather cry in the comfort of her bed, so she begins walking back in the direction of the nearest subway station.
She thinks of how she’s going to explain her shattered state when her members inevitably ask what’s wrong. She regrets being so stubborn, sneaking out of the dorm even after they begged her not to see Seojun. Her stomach churns when remembering how fiercely she defended him to the boys on many occasions, when all along they were right—he doesn’t care about her.
Maybe it’s silly to feel so heartbroken, and as unpleasant as Seojun was to her at times in their relationship, she really tried to focus on his good traits, convinced herself that everything would get better once they make things official.
Clearly, she was wrong, and now she’s left to pick up the broken pieces of her heart after he trampled over it, no longer blinded by the lies she’d been feeding herself.
It’s when she sucks in a huge breath of air that she finally notices how dry and tight her throat feels. Knowing there’s a convenience store just around the corner where she can pick up some water, she quickens her pace until the bright fluorescent sign ahead grows bigger and bigger.
The lone figure standing in front of the store turns in Juliet’s direction at the sound of her hurried footsteps and her heart skips a beat from paranoia. She squints to get a better look at his face, shocked yet relieved when she realises it’s—
“Oppa? Why are you here?” she asks weakly, too emotionally drained to hide her puffy eyes and red nose from him.
Jongho gives her a sheepish smile. “Felt a bit restless after dinner, so I thought I’d go for a walk.”
She knows it’s a lie and that really, he’s here for her because they’re currently a good 20-minute subway ride away from home, and under different circumstances she might’ve been a little annoyed that he followed her here, but now she couldn’t be more grateful that he came all the way to make sure she gets back safe.
He doesn’t ask her what happened. He knows. Instead, he holds up the tiny carton that’s been sitting in his hand the whole time. “I got you banana milk, thought you might want something sweet.”
With wobbly lips she accepts the drink and the tiny straw, but in a split second she finds herself wrapping her arms around Jongho and sobbing into his shoulder like a child. He doesn’t seem taken aback as he accepts the hug, his own arms holding her securely while he strokes her hair. He doesn’t say anything else, and he doesn’t stop her from crying into his shirt because he knows that right now what she needs most is support—support that he’s more than happy to give.
Several minutes later, Juliet’s breathing starts to even and her blubbers die down. His heart twinges at the sight of her tear-streaked face as she pulls away, and he has no doubt the other boys will feel the same once they see her. Her being upset might just be one of their least favourite things in the world.
“Thank you,” she croaks.
“Ay, it’s nothing. What brother would I be if let you go home alone at this hour?”
“No, I mean…” she pauses for a moment to contain her emotions, “thank you for being here with me, for me. You have no idea how much I appreciate it and how relieved I was when I saw you.”
“We’ll always be here for you, Julie,” he says, reaching for her unoccupied hand and giving it a gentle squeeze. “You’re not alone, and you’re going to be okay.”
She cracks the first smile of the night. “I know. Man, heartbreaks really do suck, huh?” she jokes sadly in an attempt to lighten up the mood.
“He doesn’t deserve you,” is all Jongho says, his other hand clenching itself into a fist at the thought of the jerk who hurt her so badly.
“You know what? After tonight, I’m starting to believe that too.”
