The funeral was held on one of the few sunny days in Gotham. It was a beautiful day, the wind was calm, the clouds were kind, and the temperature was perfect for being outside. Dick hated it all. He wanted it to be slamming down rain in buckets, he wanted the wind the lash against his skin. He wanted the wind to be screaming in his ears.
It wasn't a large funeral. There wasn't many people left to attend. Tim's parents were dead, Bruce was gone, and not a single person could name a civilian friend that could attend. Where were his friends?
Dick was standing there with Alfred. The elderly man that Dick had come to see as a grandfatherly figure was quite. Damian had gone back inside already, and Dick couldn't stop him. The Foxes had left an hour previously, Tam having hugged Dick apologizing for not getting there faster. It was calm, and Dick hated it.
The dirt had been packed down, the headstone put in place, and the last affairs taken care of. He had been placed next to Bruce, and not far away from Jason's old resting place. All Dick could think of was why him? Why Tim?
He had shown up at the airport, thousands of words, apologies ready to say. An air of relief. Waiting to see his little brother again. Only for Jim to be met with Tam and a closed coffin being moved into the back of a transport car.
Tam who had been crying with a hand over her mouth. Dick who had begged her that it wasn't true. Both looking at eachother, both knowing the truth, and both with streams of tears down eachother's eyes.
"There wasn't anything I could do."
He wanted to yell and scream. Tell her she could have done more, could have gotten to him sooner. He didn't. She did everything she could.
"I wish I could have done more."
Why was she apologizing? This was Dick's fault. He should have known better, should have been there. This was his little brother that he just let run away. His little brother who went on his adventure to find Bruce and paid for his life. Tim was gone, and Dick was to blame.
"I'm sorry."
Dick was sorry.
Now standing in front of the grave, all Dick could hear was Tim's voice begging for him to listen, to at least consider the idea that Bruce was alive. Dick could hear Tim yelling, and huffing as he stormed away. He could hear the screaming from Tim's room, the broken furniture, and the heartbreaking sobs. His little brother was gone and he would never hear him again.
Why is he gone? Why him! It should have been anyone else. Dick screams as he falls in front of the grave, the flowers in his hand falling, rolling to the side.
You know what would be an extremely angsty fic idea???
Set during the Red Robin storyline, Dick rushing to the airport when he finds out Tam found his brother, both excited and terrified, a thousand apologies and explanations rushing through his brain because he wants to make it right to Tim, he wants to make him understand why he did what he did and hopes they can find a middle ground and move on. He sees Tam and runs to her, looking around for Tim and when he can’t find him he turns to Tam and asks where is his brother? She just looks so sad, holding his hand carefully before saying how sorry she is, and then turning to the private jet from where they’re lowering a coffin, and Dicks whole world shatters.
AU where Tim doesn’t survive the desert attack.
