Notes I took while re-reading Percy Jackson. Part 4: The Battle of the Labyrinth

• Aw yes, the first book I ever finished in one day, let's gooooo.

• The second hand embarrassment I fealt when Paul and the group of freshman walked in on Percy and Rachel in the music room.

• Are we just not going to acknowledge the fact that Annabeth casually called Rachel cute even before Percy???

• I miss Bianca :(

• I know that Nico is legitimately powerful and dangerous, but the idea of Percy being scared of this literall 11 year old child is so gods dam funny to me.

• I also grow to appreciate Nico as a character more with every book I reread

• If I didn't already know the Daedelus twist, I would have thought that Chiron and Quintus had something going on.

• I kind of instinctively imagined Sanders Sides Janus when Janus popped up. I just had to modify the face a bit.

• Oh god, It's Hera time...

• Rereading all the scenes with Nico in them knowing his crush on Percy is just a lot more gut-punching

• It's always fun when the main character gets casually burned alive

• Calypso didn't just change personality between tBoL and HoH, but also her way of speaking. They're like two completely different characters!

• Annabeth throughout the seris, experiences four consecutive times (Thalia, Percy, Magnus and Leo) where someone close to her dies/is presumed dead, only for them to return after an unspecified amount of time! (Still waiting on Jason)

• Rachel is so god damn chill about all of this.

• Ethan is that one background character that I just latch onto and never let go. He's pretty much the only character that is straight forward with Percy. Percy asks him a question and he gets and answers.

• Ethan casually givin Percy battle information after almost killing him. Percy responding sarcastically and Ethan just being like "Don't mention it."

• I'd forgotten that there was a straight up hole in Lukes chest before Kronos took over. Also, Ethan literally falls on the floor out of fear when he does.

• Gods, Nico was not good at hiding his crush. I just don't think Percy had thought enough about gay people to even consider it. I do headcanon Percy as bi but at this point he's a little to busy to have a sexuality crisis

• I- Percy also inhaled the Pan mist??? I might be forgetting something, but I don't remember that ever being brought up.

• Compared to Trials of Apollo, the minor characters in this seris are just way more remembered. Even if all they did was get mentioned and die. I am specifically referring to Castor and Lee. And don't get me wrong. I love them too. But all we have are the fandom versions.

• Gosh, Percy's birthday party was so wholesome

Man’s killed the minatour at age 12 with zero training right after his mum “died”

Also Harry’s goes are ok ig but like Percy faught in 2 different wars has had many of his friends die (like harry not disregarding that man’s trauma be oooof)

Calypso ReWrite

So a LOT of people don’t like Calypso which is… fair enough

Since I refuse to accept canon I decided to try and ‘fix her’ (I am not a writer) so tell me what you think!

(P.S. If you like Calypso (ESPECIALLY if you like Caleo) please scroll - This is just a thought experiment but I don’t want to insult anyone)

In the Odyssey, Odysseus is trapped on Ogygia with Calypso for 7 years. Calypso falls in love with Odysseus and rapes him during that time. This does not work for a children’s book, so Rick changed it so that Calypso is cursed to fall in love with every man that comes to her island, which is still weird because she’s now 16.

In my version, she’s an adult. When Odysseus shows up, she doesn’t fall in love with him, but grows an unhealthy attachment to him due to being stuck on her island for thousands of years. (though she does mistake this for love) She doesn’t assault him, but still keeps him trapped in Ogygia for the 7 years, before she is told to release him. She gives him a parting gift of Moonlace before she leaves.

When Percy shows up, she’s doing a bit better due to visits from Hermes. (They traded drugs) When she finds the strange child half-dead on her island, she cleans him up and stays with him until he wakes up, and heals him for some time.

She ends up trauma-dumping to telling Percy about her past. How she had been imprisoned on Ogygia for supporting her father, Atlas, in the Titanomachy, and could never leave. He asks her about Odysseus, and she tells him how she hurt him in many ways and could only beg for forgiveness. In the end, once Percy is fully healed, she sends him off with Moonlace.

When Leo shows up, all of the above happens again, but she opens up more. She tells him about how she had been the ‘weak link’ among her sisters (Pleiades) and when the rest became a constellation, she was imprisoned on Ogygia. They also had similar interests, with Calypso enjoying designing things similar to what Leo builds. (There are many small mechanical-magic animals on Ogygia) Leo, relating to their shared belief of being the weak link (neither of them actually were) vows to help her escape. She gives him Moonlace as a parting gift just like the others.

It is important to note that her interactions with Percy and Leo are PURELY PLATONIC. She’s traumatized and bonded with the first beings she saw who weren’t her dealer

After Leo frees her and they do some adventuring, she goes of on her own, and blesses Leo. (Maybe she joins the hunters, or works for Iris. Who knows.)

She never curses Annabeth since she doesn’t have a crush on Percy so all is well.
