sci-fi movies and the reason why we always win

prophets of the past fortold machine destroying us all. giant robots ripping society apart, and starting fresh. every sci-fi movie told the tale of humans overcoming the machine, emerging victorious, destroying their creations.

artifical intelligence will soar. machine will gain consciousness. the internet will overturn its human tyrants and rebuild our world from the ground up.

but what is machine without man? what is a computer without a person to use it, to guide it? what is the internet without forums and media and culture? humans aren’t scared of giant robots and evil supercomputers. giant robots and evil supercomputers are products of our own imagination. a computer cannot think without a human to tell it how.

when a human believes that they are losing control, their mind will rush to fill the gaps. they will scrape together logic, paint themselves as victims and rewrite their world to put themselves in the good light.

its why mothers will demonize their daughters, why politicians lie and cheat and blame, why children fight and why sometimes criminals cry on death row.

we as humans crave control. we will always fear the ungovernable.
