So in the novel, Vito tells Tom that he won't have time to visit Genco because he has to go to California to see Woltz even though Vito is literally about to go to the hospital with his other sons and Johnny Fontane and has instructed Tom not to leave for the airport until Vito returns.

How does this make sense?
