He didn’t know the World of Life housed humans with such power. He didn’t know she housed such power.

She seemed so meek. So kind, so gentle. He let his guard down. Anyone would have done the same around her. But the moment he relaxed, the hunt began.

Jax knew he couldn’t fight Gangle. If he did, the others might hear and he would lose their trust. And if he lost their trust, then the whole plan would fail.

He would fail.

So, all he could do was run. He was glad that Zooble’s house was so big, for it meant there were less dead ends. He guessed that was the perk of having rich parents, although it probably wasn’t common to be the victim of a whip yielding magical girl. Perhaps he should have sent himself down as the son of a financially sound couple….

Darting through the halls, he couldn’t tell whether the footsteps that echoed were his or hers.

Finally, he found a door that led outside. Jax practically fell onto the ground as he desperately clawed at the knob to open it.

He didn’t want to admit he was scared. He swore (and still will in the future) that his heart rate had increased only because he was running. He swore his movements were more sloppy only because it was late at night and he hadn’t warmed up.

He swore he never screamed when he saw Gangle - now Cure Ribbons - staring down at him from the top balcony.

Jax’s hand darted to his pocket, searching for his wand. It took some time, but he found it and managed to transform into Cure Spring.

He hated this form for what it stood for, but he loved the power it gave him. With it, he was more nimble, more swift, more graceful.

Jax had no time to make a plan, however, for the moment he transformed, Gangle dropped from the balcony, sticking a perfect landing in front of him.

Thus commenced the standoff. Neither one moved. Jax didn’t know why.

This girl… she didn’t seem human anymore.

Jax was sure she was, but… the look on her face said otherwise. It was all shadow, aside from the one eye her mask didn’t cover.

Her stance was firm, like that of a predator waiting for the right moment to pounce. Before, she was so easy to read. Now, Jax couldn’t even tell who she was anymore.

The silence of the night was broken finally by the mutter of one word.

“Liar.”

The right moment had come, predator charging at prey.

Jax barely had any time to comprehend what was happening when a whirlwind of whips came his way. He tried his best to dodge, but even with his increased dexterity, Jax was struck countless times.

There weren’t even any openings for him to counterattack. It was just assault after assault after assault.

Perhaps that was a good thing. Then the rest of the precure would only see his side of the story.

But he couldn’t help but wonder…

Where did all of this strength come from? Had Gangle always been this powerful?

It was almost like Jax was accepting the beating. He wanted to fight back, to stop this blitz, but he physically couldn’t. Countless times he was knocked down, countless times he was temporarily rendered imobile.

He could see blood seeping through his clothes with his blurred vision.

The precure never drew blood.

Was he about to die?

Was he really going to lose his life to this meek girl?

And then, there was an ear shattering scream. As sudden as they came, the lashes ceased.

As his ears rang and his vision started to clear, Jax saw another body standing outside now.

Ragatha? No… she was transformed into Cure Buttons.

She was holding her bow as if she had just shot one of her needles from it. But if she didn’t shoot it at him, then who?

His eyes wandered the courtyard until he saw a body laying on the ground, motionless.

Did… Ragatha shoot her?

Jax didn’t have time to wonder when everyone else came out.

A few people, he was too disoriented to tell who, came to his aid, while someone else ran over to Gangle’s body.

Questions were asked by the others, but Jax was trying too hard to stay conscious to answer them.

It wasn’t long before another scream ran out, but not of pain this time. This time it was anger.

Jax managed to sit up just enough to watch Gangle being restrained by Zooble. Her movements were erratic and she tried to break free from their hold, but it wouldn’t work.

At first, she could only scream in fury. But then, she started to sob.

Her wails filled the night as she cried and blubbered. All the while, she continuously condemned Jax for lying to the group, for betraying them. She claimed she “knew it all along”.

Jax didn’t know how he let himself be so transparent around her.

As sleep threatened his mind again, Jax fought it off long enough to watch Gangle switch from sobbing to laughing maniacally.

She really had broken down.

Part of the sight made him feel something different.

What was it?

But just as Jax was about to identify it, he found himself too exhausted to stay awake any longer.
