So. I have a lot of thoughts about Samuel, and Tumblr can have them too. It's just....Samuel choosing to die because he knows it’s the only option he can accept. He did it all for his family. He acted like someone he dreamed, the hero in his own story—who let his friends continue their story with his courageous act. His reprise is him coming to terms with the fact his compassion and imagination truly are his greatest strengths, that they've given him so much. Now, it's his turn to give back. The human spirit will persist even in tragedy.
It makes me so proud of him that he wasn’t afraid in the end. His voice didn't waver on his final lines. He felt no need to prove himself to Kal, because he was utterly certain what Kal called him was wrong. He knew. Samuel looked at Kal and said, no. you won’t touch them. their stories will live on, and you won’t win this. .
..And it's not even their stories, really. He calls it our story, doesn't he? Samuel was brave, and he was kind, and he was always a part of the story. Even if he felt he had a smaller role than his friends, he got them all where they needed to be. He helped Margaret find her answers, getting her off that roof - she says it herself! He spoke with John about the weight of a legacy, a crucial step for John to break free of the expectations put on him and be happy. He was the first person Rose ever dreamed with, each other's harbour in a storm. He lives in the echoes, now.
Margaret, Rose and John will never, ever stop telling stories about their friend, their brother, the hero that saved them. The man who was a storyteller, an open ear. who was always there for them. They never would have gotten as far as they did without him by their side, because I firmly believe he was their heart.
Samuel's legacy, his legacy of hope, dreaming and light, will live on.
