My camera broke in August, so I don't have access to recent pictures. However, there are some low quality ones on facebook that I'd rather share than nothing at all.

This is my beautiful city, Salamanca.

This is the Plaza Mayor, the central point of Salamanca. It's the favorite meeting spot of students and seniors alike, debajo del reloj (under the clock). I walk through the Plaza multiple times a day and never cease to be amazed by how cool it is.

Now is a time of protest in Spain and across the world. Earlier this semester, Salmantinos against bullfighting gathered in the Plaza Mayor to voice their discontent. It was an interesting dynamic, because many citizens are pro-bullfighting, and some shouted throughout the rally to disrupt it. Bullfighting is mostly popular with the older generation, but it will likely be a long time before it becomes illegal across Spain.

The 15M movement has also been demonstrating in the Plaza almost every day since I've been in Salamanca. Starting out as a disorganized mass, it has recently become a rallying force throughout Spain, as well as in some other cities in the world. This past weekend, hundreds of people gathered to voice their discontent with Spain's high unemployment, among other social issues.

Catedral Nueva, Catedral Vieja. Salamanca's the only city in the world, so I'm told, with two cathedrals. Instead of (the pre-industrial revolution equivalent of) bulldozing the first cathedral, they just built another one onto it.

It finally rained here after months of living in an unopened box of saltines. I was excited to capture the cathedral(s) at dusk, because monuments always look more epic with clouds in the sky. It's alright during the day as well, I suppose.

Plaza Mayor before the storm.

Historically, the richest Charros (people of Salamanca) congregated in the Plaza to show off their wealth. The richer the family, the more luxurious the baby pram. Nowadays, the richest people still live in the apartments along the plaza, but everybody goes there to hang out. Students sit on the ground while families sit at the cafe tables outside for tapas.

For a week every september, Salamanca hosts a huge festival. There's lots of cultural events, but my favorite part was the casetas. Every bar moves into the streets, offering cheap drinks/tapas. This picture was taken in the morning, but from the late afternoon until the close at 12:30, I could hardly move in the crowd. Everybody was happy, the weather was nice, and the tapas were delicious.

The second picture is from a tapas restaurant after the ferias were over, but that would have been available for 1.80 euros--about 2.20 dollars.

Casa de Lis café. The Casa de Lis is an art deco/art nouveau museum, but the best part is the stained glass. This beautiful window is in the cafe, which faces the setting sun. The atmosphere in general is cosy and relaxing, but it's especially nice at the end of the day.

They tell us not to take pictures, so these were sneaky.

Catedral Vieja.

During the 1755 Lisbon earthquake (11th worst by magnitude @ 8.7), the old cathedral cracked. Today, if you stand at the correct angle, you can see the slight tilt of the tower.

The best times to take walks are sunday mornings and summer nights at dusk. This sunday, I took a walk through a tiny park near my apartment that I usually overlook.

Salamanca's a conservative city, but that doesn't stop the liberal-minded people from speaking up (loudly).

The first poster includes pictures of almost every European politician, including both spanish presidential candidates and the pope. Fascism is an incredibly touchy subject here, as Spain's only 30ish years removed from Franco. In fact, you're considered fascist if you fly the national flag if there isn't a soccer game that day.

The second picture says "Cancelled because of animal cruelty".
