She secretly fights monsters, saves the world, has a secret bade, has sidekicks and in generally heroic and awesome. For these reasons Sarah Jane Smith (from Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane Adventures) is one of the greatest female superheroes ever. And when she gets done saving the world she still has time to be a mum too, and they’re pretty damn heroic all by themselves.
It makes me sad that in a world where a character like that, played by a woman in her 60s, can be such a major hit but we still have this mentality that to be an appealing super hero (or character generally) you MUST be male you MUST be young you MUST be single and childfree and there is little leeway outside that.
No middle aged character can be appealing? No characters who’re married can be appealing? No characters who have children can be appealing?
That’s bullshit and limiting

i don’t know what i want more: to see martha back at unit alongside kate stewart and osgood, or to see luke smith show up in a unit story with kate, so we can have “the unit family, mark II”. if we got both at the same time, besides the obvious of kate standing in for the brigadier and luke standing in for sarah jane, there could definitely be a few parallels drawn between other unit personnel from the two eras. harry and martha both being doctor-turned-companions who chose to stay on earth and work with unit, is an obvious example…

Luke: No, I brought the next best thing.
Clyde: Hey.
Sarah Jane: You brought Clyde? Damn it, the next best thing would be Rani!
Clyde: Normally I’d be offended, but she is freakishly smart.

Character is erased from time, only one person remembers them and must fight alone to fix things
Adopted character is “discovered” by “real parents,” Tearing His Family Apart
Character’s absent parent appears, turns out to be the villain of the week–also, isolates character by magically erasing their memories of their friends and other parent
Character finds self sent back to the day their parents died, must struggle between saving them and maintaining the timeline
Character literally trapped in worst nightmares by a nightmare monster, forced through scenarios of abandonment and rejection until saved by The Power of Friendship!
Two characters trapped alone in a suddenly-empty world… I’m sure this won’t lead to any shipping hints at all
Character meets new rival, befriends rival, feels inferior to rival… then has life taken over by rival, who it turns out specifically planned to become Main Character 2.0 (But Evil)
Character is literally cursed so that everyone who hears or sees their name hates them, loses everyone and everything in a matter of hours in the most painful way possible
Also, other ways SJA feels like fanfiction:
Characters and relationships grow over time
Characters mostly get along, with drama provided by outside threats instead of contrived conflict
Characters talk about their feelings AND openly and regularly display affection
“This is Clyde is anyone there?”
“This is Alan Jackson what the fuck”
the entirety of sarah jane adventures: family friendly, literally nothing scary at all except maybe that one clown episode
sarah jane adventures season 4 episode one and two: hey what if we made luke get stalked by a dream demon and then he gets separated from all his friends in family in a dream dimension and also we expose his every fear
it’s so weird that sarah jane and k9 are now so associated with each other despite never interacting once in the classic series
