Was Choâs massacre a homage to Oldboy?

â âOldboyâ, a South Korean movie directed by Park Chanwook which follows the story of a man named Oh Daesu who mysteriously gets kidnapped and confined in a cell-like hotel room. After 15 years of imprisonment, he finally gets released and goes on a bloody rampage and seeks vengeance against his captors.
Among the photos and videos mailed by Cho to NBC, thereâs one photo of him with a chilling grin on his face, brandishing a hammer which strikingly resembles a scene from the movie âOld Boyâ, where the protagonist is seen holding up a hammer right when he is about to engage in a physical altercation with a group of people. This conspiracy of Cho supposedly paying homage to the famous violence packed scene from the movie was made by Professor Paul Harris of Virginia tech who informed the authorities about it. However during the investigation it was simply ruled out as a speculation due to a lack of concrete evidence.
To further debunk the theory, Cho never used a hammer during the shooting besides his two hand guns.
Cho doesnât strike me as in the least creative, however. Dude was crazy. Dude was, in the memorable phrasing of Nikki Giovanni, "just mean.'' Essentially thereâs no story here, except for a paranoid aâhole who went DEFCON-1. He may have been inspired by Columbine, but only because he was too dim to think up such a scenario on his own.

hollow-point bullets used by Cho Seung-hui during the shooting.
i assume some people must have noticed it before but there are 30 bullets shown here (or more because the photo looks cropped but i maybe wrong though! ). whether he did it intentionally or not itâs interesting somehow.
i just wanna say this is exactly how i feel abt him, and u articulated it so well. i will always grieve for the life seunghui could have had if it wasn't for the people around him who misconstrued every bit of his personality. even though his parents got him the help he needed they eventually gave up on him and decided to "let him be" as he grew up (said by his mother). poor poor cho it didn't help that the professors at VT were undermining him bc of his withdrawn nature to the point where they constantly questioned his skills and capabilities as a student and labeled him manipulative all because he was struggling to talk and interact with people. this man was misunderstood until his last breath, and that never changed even after his death.
seunghui was failed by everyone around him, I do not view him as evil or disturbed - I donât believe that and I hate that people just resort to labelling him as some sort of monster because of what he did. Iâve talked before about how Iâm tired of people treating killers like spawned fictional characters (in many different forms) and this is another example of that frustration.
I talked last night about how he was failed creatively but itâs more important to acknowledge that he was failed in support of his health. I will never understand why laws prevent the sharing of information for a studentâs disabilities or their need for some kind of extra assistance. as an autistic person myself, I know that the last thing a young person has the ability to do in an anxious school setting is advocate for themselves over and over again. Iâm not surprised seunghui didnât tell teachers about his selective mutism diagnosis, plus he was already being treated as an anomaly because of his workâŚwhy would he create more attention for himself? why would he want to try and explain things if he felt that the people around him didnât care?
âfairfax school officials would not speak about cho directly, citing privacy laws. they said, however, that a team of psychologists had studied selective mutism in detail, worked with several children and made âsignificant progressâ with the students.â the fact that this information is literally withheld when a student moves forward in their education is baffling and definitely the biggest contributor to the decline in his mental health. he was shoved into a completely new environment, one that wasnât fit for him, and was expected to make sure he took charge of his situation after not having to do so before. that would send anyone into a state of intense isolation.
he was taunted for staying silent and his teachers would be angered by his lack of responses: no, there was no way in hell he was going to voluntarily call for the assistance he needed. it causes a certain type of frustration within me reading the emails teachers sent to each other about him. to me, some of them talked about the possibility of autism like it was the reason why they felt âuneasyâ with him - like if they have a label they can maybe ignore him, like a label is an excuse and not simply a path for the right support. thereâs one person who said he was most likely being âintentionally difficultâ which really irked meâŚthey already saw he was suffering with something but, for some reason, still expected him to muster up some kind of power to change his behaviour and responses on his own.
I feel for seunghui and the pressure that he was under those four years of university; even the previous years of his life were difficult anyway. I wish the circumstances were different for him so that he could maybe lead a fulfilling life instead of seeing the only way out being hurting himself and those around him. I wish peace for the victims but also peace for him.
COMPLAINTS MADE AGAINST CHO BY STUDENTS AT VT (and some of my thoughts regarding them)

⢠Accused of continuously stabbing a carpet in a girlâs room when he and his friends and a few other students came back to the girlâs room after a gathering. The same girl also accused Cho of writing a Romeo & Juliet quote on a board outside her room. She did not file a formal complaint to the Judicial Affairs of VT but Cho still got a warning from a campus officer.
⢠Tried to enter a female students room in disguise. This was mentioned in the full report to the Governor of Virginia and it says that this incident was reported in relation to the phone calls received by the girl and that Cho had allegedly tried to contact her in person.
⢠Two girls at VT also accused him of stalking them but they declined to press charges against him. Apparently they just âfeltâ that Cho was stalking them. (duh)
⢠Choâs suitemate Andy Koch also revealed that he used to harass him on calls.
⢠He was revealed to have taken pictures of female classmates legs as said by Nikki Giovanni (Professor in the English department at VT who also taught a few classes Cho had attended) only after the horrific crime happened. However in an archived article on Newsday from 2008, it mentions that he only took pictures of students which made them uncomfortable and did not elaborate further. This particular incident is not mentioned anywhere in the official report to the Governor of Virginia except in a few online articles where they donât even bother to explain or provide proper sources. They simply went ahead with NGâs words but did NG actually say this? weâll never know.
Also Virginia Tech Police Department did not receive any communication from the girls but those girls made complaints to the judicial affairs office of VT. Later on VTPD was notified of this matter and Cho received a warning from them.
Itâs important to keep in mind that some of them are just accounts from his roommates and suitemates, and other students through some email reports about his behaviour and verbal reports to the police campus and fucking Nikki Giovanni of all people.
The most baffling part is that the entirety of English department, especially Nikki Giovanni and Lucinda Roy (Chair of English Department at VT) were completely unaware of the problems Cho was dealing with VTPD.
There was no direct communication involved between Virginia Tech Police Department, English department and the students so itâs safe to assume that a lot of facts were possibly sidelined along the way. It seems to me that everyone at VT was so keen on treating Cho Seunghui like a lunatic psychward escapee that they forgot how to address the problems and take actual actions against him & get him the help he needed.

⢠A stop motion animation video titled âCho Seung-hui is heroâ which satirically reimagines the killing spree. (credit to the creators Jesseppi and AntiSweden).

âRichard McBeefâ by incelcore artist Gezebelle Gaburgably is a song inspired by Choâs self-penned play of the same title. Not a bad song so to speak but the lazy chorus âRichard Mcbeef youâre r*p!ng meâ is abysmal.
âSeung-Hui Choâ by Jsavant on spotify. Presumably written in Choâs perspective. The lyrics are quite banal and rubbish and doesnât seem to mention anything significant about him or the massacre. Why use his name to craft something ridiculous?
Another pathetic attempt at writing a song in Choâs persective. The lyrics arenât even worth discussing at all + they mentioned a victimâs name. Gay gay gay? kekeke? simply unserious and disrespectful.

⢠Three dramatized adaptations of the play Richard McBeef.
Richard McBeef: The Motion Picture â Mcbeef catching strays from Sue were the best scenes throughout the movie. The chainsaw scene was hilarious.
Richard McBeef: The play â âYou ainât my dad and you know it you deickâ *bites into a granola bar aggressively*. Incredible performance by the cast. Better than the movie I must say.
Richard McBeef: The Lost Copy â This sucks but thatâs the whole point of it I guess.
