Chapters 1 & 2 are up!

Summary:

So they’re in a G.U.N. issued, jet black, fully tinted Dodge Charger SRT (or a Hellcat, as Shadow insists they call it because it sounds better) armoured pursuit vehicle and Amy is forced to sit between Knuckles and Shadow in the back seat because the echidna is too tall to sit in the middle and Omega would rather the dark hedgehog sit directly behind the front passenger seat so he doesn’t have to see his death stare every time he checks the rear-view mirror.

(or, Omega expresses a desire to learn to drive)

Summary:

After much thoroughly painful back and forth, Rouge had managed to convince the senior fleet manager to dispatch another vehicle to them.

i quite literally cannot stress this enough when i say that if Shadow and Amy are robbed of their Ark conversation in the movies i will actually riot.

I know I gushed about Any doing a rock lee with her weighted bracelets but I also LOVE the idea of Amy still being weak compared to the others. I mean, that was what her original character was meant to be right? The normal one, the one who can't be as strong as knuckles, the one who can't be as fast as sonic.

Before Amy became strong like everyone else, it was the times where she was weakest where she was the strongest version of herself. It was her love and compassion that made Shadow realize what Maria truly wanted him to do, it was her love and compassion that made Silver rethink about the morality of his mission, it was her love and compassion that made Gamma realize that he could be more than being just 'eggman's robot".

I find it so meaningful to have a character that has so much love and compassion for everyone that she would help even foes to stir them in to the right direction

I find it so meaningful to have a physically weak character that stands up against foes and will keep standing up no matter how many times they get hit because she wants to protect everyone she loves for her heart is a flame, and she is a forest fire

compliments Amy like she’s his wife and lectures Silver like he’s his son COINCIDENCE? mmmmm I THINK NOT, METHINKS.

CHAPTER 4! LESSGOOO

Rouge’s mouth is hung agape, Knuckles is squeezing his grapes so tight the juice starts dripping onto the otherwise pristine mats, Shadow looks vaguely close to spontaneously combusting, but it’s Sonic who opens his mouth.

I’m really glad someone else brought this up because I always thought it was really weird to ultimately limit Shadow’s capacity for love to Maria and Maria alone. And this hits especially different after watching episode 2 of Dark Beginnings, because Maria tells Shadow that his choices and his actions shape who he is (not his genetic makeup), and it’s because of what he chooses to do with this free will that he will meet other people he can trust and form relationships with aside from her. That he’s not inherently bad (nor inherently good), but he chooses to be good and that’s what makes him who he is.

So, back to Amy, to say that Amy = Maria or that she supposedly fills this Maria-shaped hole in his chest just objectively isn’t congruent with their interactions in SA2 or at all in canon. Yes, she does share a lot of traits with Maria in the form of her compassion and empathy, but Maria is characterized by something a little more delicate whereas Amy’s a little (a lot) rougher around the edges. And to have lived on this planet and not be corrupted by the ugliness of the world, to extend an olive branch to him in spite of his actions, to quite literally reduce him to tears (or single tear drop) despite not knowing him at all… those interactions are all uniquely Shadow and Amy.

Anyone who’s scrolled through my blog could argue that I’m a bit biased (and I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that way because like 90% of my posts are Shadamy interactions where Shadow is just down astronomical for her), but even looking at it through a platonic lens, rather than a romantic one, I just can’t see Shadow only doing the right things for the reason alone that it was what Maria would have wanted, and then by extension taking from Amy’s personhood by having her fill the void Maria left behind. That’s not her job, that’s not what her character is there for, and it isn’t what Shadow needs either.

Shadow’s decisions are his own, and he is who he is because he chooses to be a protector. As Maria said herself.

Amy didn’t need to be Maria for Shadow to keep his promise, his desire to protect was already there. She just held up the mirror ;)

She knows he’ll do the right thing.

I’m… gonna lean into the conversation about Maria ≈ Amy for just a moment because I’d like to offer an alternative read on the situation.

If Shadow only cares for Amy because she reminds them of Maria, that does two things: 1: it undoes all of the progress Shadow has made in trying to live and experience that which is around him, and 2: It limits his relationship with Amy (in whatever way you see it) as being almost solely supported on her reminding him of Maria. 

If Amy is a reincarnation of Maria… then that undermines Amy’s argument. I was talking about this with my friend @lambpaca, and they put it best, I think. “If Amy was a reincarnation of Maria, does that mean Maria’s soul is the only one to have ever wanted humanity to have a chance? Everyone wants the best for the world.  Maria is not the only one with this sentiment. That's the POINT.”  I’d also go so far as to say it also undermines who Amy is as a person. Amy is a multidimensional character full of her own hope and wonder. She’s dealt with traffic and taxes and politics and assholes. She’s had her fair share of having nothing but instant ramen in her kitchen cabinet and forgetting her umbrella on the one day it rains. Amy Rose has lived life on Earth and, despite every instance she has come across that might make her angry about it, she loves it. She champions Earth because she knows it and loves it- she is intimately invested in this pale blue dot we call home. Her reasons are unique and separate from Maria’s because they’re two separate people, and whereas Maria loved and longed for Earth in the way of an idealized dream, Amy has lived the imperfect reality and loves this planet all the more for it. 

A moment can happen where one person reminds another of someone dear to them who is now gone and have it mean nothing else other than ‘Oh, I remember again, and oh, they would have loved you.’ 

And it’s just that- a moment. A singular instance in time of recollection. But then the moment ends, and it is still just those two people in the room. The moment is only between them and them alone. 

To shove Amy into a Maria-shaped hole in Shadow’s life just… it reduces Shadow to his grief alone, undoes the significance of Maria and her life, and removes Amy’s own agency.
