Garreth is loitering just outside the Great Hall- this in itself isn’t unusual. It’s the look on his face, though, one Phillip knows all too well, that is perhaps out of sorts. As a prefect, it’s his job to investigate. He must be up to something. The fact that Leander is absent, too, is somewhat concerning.
“Weasley!” Phillip snaps, crossing his arms. “I swear to Merlin, you better not be having my brother steal for you. Again,” he adds.
Garreth jumps. “Wh-what? No, I’m not!” He turns to face Phillip. “And it’s not stealing, it’s borrowing. For the greater good. Of me making new brews.”
“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t involve Leander, at the least.” If it were anyone else, Phillip would have reported them ages ago. But Garreth’s antics in class are amusing, and he’s certain Leander would be miserable if his best friend (only friend) was in detention for the rest of his life.
“I’m not this time, honest!” Garreth protests. “Leander’s tending his plants right now. Or something.” He shrugs. “I asked the new girl to do it.”
Ah, yes. The new girl. The creepy new girl with mismatched eyes, pointy ears and fangs who, despite having threatened at least 2 people a day since arriving, was sorted into Hufflepuff. Phillip is amazed Garreth had the stones to talk to her, much less ask her a favour. “What’s she doing, exactly?”
“I only asked for a handful of dried Billywig stings. Not that big a deal. I’d do it myself, but…” He trails off. His aunt would shout at him, Phillip guesses. The amount of trouble he finds himself in, he thinks Garreth should consider himself lucky Professor Weasley isn’t breathing down his neck right this very minute. “Shouldn’t take too long.” Garreth checks his watch. “Bloody hell, it’s been almost an hour. Where is she?” As an answer to his question, the door swings open, and in she walks.
“Merlin’s beard,” Phillip sighs. Aurelia has not, in fact, just grabbed a handful of Billywig stings. It seems like she has half the bloody shop in her arms.
“I just asked for the stings,” Garreth groans.
“Yeah,” Auri rolls her eyes and drops the multi-coloured packages on the floor. “I got them. And some sweets.” At their horrified looks, she scowls. “What? No one was using them. They were just going to get mouldy in that cellar anyway.” She throws the stings in Garreth’s direction before beginning to sort through the candies. “Let’s see. I suppose you can have those… and those. Those are mine,” She snarls as she sees Phillip staring at a pile of ‘blood-flavoured lollipops.’ Very normal thing for a person to want, he’s sure.
“Um. I didn’t ask for- uh.”
“Boo hoo.” Auri finishes sorting the sweets into two distinct piles. Phillip can’t help but notice that hers is slightly bigger. “You got your ingredients and some chocolate frogs. What a tragic turn of events. I feel so sorry for you.”
Garreth clears his throat. “It’s not that. It’s, erm.” Aurelia tilts her head at him, as if she can smell his fear. “If Mr Redding finds out you took all this, he’s going to get very angry…”
Auri stares at Garreth as though he’s an idiot. “And? If he bothers me about it, he’s going to get very dead. It’s up to him.” She gathers up her portion of the sweets and walks off, hair swishing as she stomps down the stairs and out of sight.
“So…” Garreth starts awkwardly, now that they’re alone. “Can I offer you a chocolate bar to never mention this to anyone?”
Phillip accepts the chocolate, although it’s not really necessary. He has the feeling that ratting on Auri would equal instant death, and he really doesn’t have the time to deal with that right now.
A beat of silence, and then-
“You know, next time you should just ask Leander to help you.”
“Agreed.”
